Item Sets

Post » Tue Jan 04, 2011 11:04 am

I've always liked the idea of item sets in an RPG (with partial and completed set bonuses) - it adds hours of gameplay (if the sets were rare/hard to collect), and the feeling of accomplishment when you've completed a set, as well as the bonuses being a great tangible reward.

However, TES has never really embraced this idea, so perhaps it should stay as it is (personally, I believe stagnation equals death, but that's me).

But I want your opinions :)

Yeah it'd be pretty cool to get a set bonus but if they are going to have them it can't be like oblivion drop rates. it'd be to easy to acquire

If they made it where you would have to scour the land to find pieces of armor then helllllll yeah

Go play diablo , sacred or some other mindless hack and slash

Sets in crpgs are a no no

Of course someone may argue that TES games are crpgs anymore

I rarely got full armour/clothing sets if that's what you mean. I just mixed and matched.

*sigh* Read the part where I said TES has never embraced this idea... I know. I've played those games. And TES is great as is. But I wanted opinions on how it would work in TES. Not judgement.

*checks totem* Wait, this is the real world, I forgot :)

Thank you for the opinion :)

Sort of - I mean more like unique armors and weapons (usually enchanted) that when put together, provide additional bonuses on top of the standard ones - and very difficult to find (carried by powerful NPCs/creatures, deep in dungeons, etc.) so that finding it is worth the reward given.

I think item sets COULD be a good idea. But there have to be only two or three and their background has to be explained in the lore.

btw we've got already an item set in KOTN...

A no for me.
Why does the armor know that I wear every piece of it?
And I don't want to wear every piece of a set, e.g. the helmet if its ugly ;).

Ah, you're right, I totally forgot about that one... So, not completely unembraced :) But as you say, they'd have to be limited to a few.

1: Sets are fine in cRPG's they just need to be balanced out with specific unique gear so there not "the win" also you would need multiple sets for different play styles.

2: yeah actually to throw it out there i would say it's not a crpg anymore.

An enchantment that only activates when in the presence of another specific enchantment - very possible :)

And I agree with you on the second point, cosmetics are important - but as I say, these sets aren't necessarily a big part of the game - just a bit on the side :)

I like finding the armor sets included with FCOM in my Oblivion game and if the implementation is done well it works for the game.

I vote no for magical sets with bonuses.

I vote yes for sets that fit together properly and offer somewhat better benefits than a collection of individual mismatched pieces.

I also vote yes for having to have armour fitted to you by a professional, or developing the skill yourself. Ill-fitting armour should have reduced effectiveness.

it would NOT work... thats all there is to it... this isnt diablo, its a completely different type of RPG.

dont get me wrong, i love diablo, and am anxiously waiting diablo 3, but TES is just way too different, item sets would NOT work with it, at all... it'd just completely ruin the feeling of TES.

Well that is the point of the bonus. The armor is magic and bestows special powers to the person who collects all of it. And there aren't any rules saying the other pieces can't have their own bonuses. It worked out fine in Diablo 2, if you had one piece you would just get whatever that item had but if you wore 2 pieces or 3 or 5 it would give you different additional bonuses.
