Items in chest disappearing-at home

Post » Sun Aug 08, 2010 2:42 pm

Okay so its like this; and I'm sure everyone else does this too.

I gather essential stuff for a battle; bows arrows, and a sword. I probably have 199/500 encumberence but several items to increase the weight. So I set forth and do a quest, kill off several tombs or whatever; I come back with encumberence 800/820, So I always always go to the Waterfront, the free shack I was given. I drop off almost everything (weapons/armor) and decide I want to sell some stuff (to also boost up my mercantile skill).

After dropping off items, I fast travel to market; sell, fast travel to waterfront, gather more items, fast travel, and repeat. When done I go back to the waterfront and pick up my gear and set forth again.

Okay but now Ive ran into a problem...............the chest at the bed is making my items disappear. Yes thats right, several bows I have placed in there are gone. And no; I do not come back after 3 days. I start selling at 8am, fast travel back and forth and by 11am same day I tried to pick up my gear and I've lost about 5 bows, 1 style of arrows, and possibly more stuff in my chest.

I'm wondering why or how this is happening.

I have Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion installed; nothing else.
No mods
No expansion packs
Version 1.2.0416

Now if I remember correctly doesnt Oblivion have like 2 Auto save files? I've deleted 1 but I didnt think it was that big of a deal. I manually save my games so when I sort the folder by date; I delete the previous ones that I dont need.

autosave.ess

thats the only file in my save directory at the moment, with my other manual saves of course.

autosave is for like when you rest or fast travel (thats the file) and the other file I see sometimes in my directory is the quicksave feature by pressing F5????

At any rate, I guess I meant to ask this earlier. I was hoping to play tonight but this isnt the first time I've seen items disappear from my chest at the foot of the bed inside my FREE shack at the waterfront. Perhaps I should consider moving all my belongings to a different city with a more reliable 'personal' chests?

Any thoughts? Thanks

PS I'm sure I can load an earlier saved game and get my bows back; thats not the problem. Im' just wondering why items keep disappearing.

The items are probably "still there." If you fill a container (or your inventory) with too many items, the display can get messed up. Remove a bunch of things, and you will probably find your stuff reappearing.

sometimes they don't disappear, they just don't show up if a chest is full, particularly if there are a lot of armour pieces repaired to 125%. May not help, but sometimes if you empty the chest the missing items will reappear.

OP, Note the bolded bit. It's a sure fire way to trigger this glitch.

Makes sense with the 125% thing. Thanks.

To Itolman, this seems to me that you are in the "Abandoned Shack" meaning that no-one lives there. The title is decieving as there are occupants. they are theives and probably stole your items as they are in a non-player owned chest.

If you mean a different FREE house, the rules are the same.

I would suggest you buy the Waterfront shack (for sale in the market district) as I have never had anything stolen, and it is a good place if things are going to get sold (in reference to the market district being close to hand).

stonewall; lol not sure what house you are referring to but I do own the house at the Imperial City Waterfront (next to water).

As far as the rest of you all; YES clearing out some items brought back the items I have lost. Thank you very much.

If it was nearing capacity, it would be nice if it said; course again yes I did have a lot of armor with 125% rating.

I also ended up buying another house in Leyawaiin (sp) and moved some items over there.

NPCs don't steal from the player.

They will take food in free houses, don't store you alchemy stuff in the White Stallion lodge for example, Mazoga will take your apples and cheese, for example.

Copy that. One character decided to make White Stallion her home. 900 pounds of alchemical ingredients gone. Lesson, very painful, learned.
