Its impossible to play without Fast Travel!

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 8:15 pm

I love to RP in Elder Scrolls games and I do it 95% of the time but sometimes i get frustrated. Like quests that requires for me to travel the other side of the map for something and then get back , the trip alone is not worth the magnitude of the quest. I only got , "ok good. here are your 100 gold , take this next quest." .. And I just made a trip that took hour and a half real time and by the time I got to that city i forgot why did I even came there..

I love Skyrim but it would be much better if all the quests where concentarted around the city you are in, and then you have this "big" quest that moves you to another city so you make that " big trip" and settle in the next city and start doing quests there..

I hope you understand what I was trying to say.

AND SORRY FOR MY BUTCHERED ENGLISH. :/

oh and I forgot to say, I HATE using the fast travel option because it brakes my rp feeling but on this kind of quests I just have to use it. because I am no masochist.

Why not just take a carriage? Would that break your RP?

I'm living proof it's not. Actually its really easy not to fast travel in skyrim. Oblivion os a different story because there was no carriages. Once again this isn't oblivion.

Carriages, and also you could just enjoy the view and maybe run into some bandits while exploring, happens alot for me.

When you say fast travel, do you mean the Oblivion-style map-based fast travel or do you mean carriages? I have run on foot everywhere so far. I've taken carriages twice, at this point. I don't even own a horse. I'm having a lot of fun.

It's not "impossible."

If you play on PC don't be surprised if there is a mod for your gripes in the near future. Fallout 3 has an awesome mod in place to balance the "Fast Travel: option. Basically disabled all fast travel options in game and added a handful of travel npcs you pay to travel to the major city hubs only (rivet city, megaton, etc) was really well done

I don't fast travel either, but I get what the op is saying. It doesnt make much sense that a quest taking you all the way across the map only pays 100 gold.

Running around in the wilderness would be cool with randomized spawns and randomized enemies but without those it's just a waste of time, is it just that hard to add randomized enemies and spawns? Oh [censored] it would actually add more replayability to the game and we don't want that to happen right?

Heh. I have not fast traveled but once, and that was after four ignominious deaths at the hands of bastard mages in a fort, I zipped over to solitude to buy out the alchemist health and magicka potion stocks, then zipped back to the fort to give it one more effort. (Success, but at the cost of a companion. Oh well.)

The thing is, you are sort of equating time with money in a game world. Just have fun with it. When I was early in the game, with a quest to go start the Companions faction, the quest to go off to High Hrothgar, and some other quests, I instead decided on a whim to start across country to find Azura's shrine. For no real reason, other than it seemed to be near the mage college in Winterhold, which was also someplace I vaguely thought I wanted to go. It ended up being an epic adventure for Lydia and I, much gold and experience was earned, quite a few reloads and one of those awesome ES moments, high up on a mountain at Azura's shrine, under the two moons with the music hitting just a perfect note.

I know this game is not perfect, but my goodness, thus far I am delighted with it, even when I get frustrated with it. :)

You must be playing a different game than I am. I have had some entertaining random encounters -some funny, some deadly.

And read our forum rules while you are at it. Don't avoid the auto-censor.

I rarely fast travel. (unless I finish a quest objective/dungeon and desperately need to sell) It's the same with the carriage. It may get tiresome eventually when you've explored a majority of the landscape, but that'll take awhile. I don't even use horses anymore -- they just get in the way, aka running into battle to their deaths or just obstructing my view when I dismount. That makes running into random creatures/enemies in the wilderness a pain as a sneaky archer.

Part of the fun of Bethesda games is in the journey and not the destination. Sure, you might be trekking to the other side of the map to retrieve some guys prized spatula for which he'll gratefully pay you pocket lint for your troubles, but who knows what adventures you'll have along the way?

I tried early to stay true and not use Fast travel but there are way too many steep mountains and cliffs you have to maneuver around to get to your destination. I rather get to my destination and continue playing....

Actually, i had to travel quite far for a quest i was doing before. On the way i came across a wrecked ship on the coastline and looted it dry :)

That is the joy of The Elder Scrolls for me.

I REALLY long for levitate.I hate taking a tour around a large mountain when I can see the building I'm supposed to go on the top.And the dragonborn seems to have ridiculous jumping problems.

If that was fixed,it'd be much easier I presume.

No, quests like this don't get you 100 gold. You get 100 gold, exp, loot, new side quests, more discovery and exploration, everything you would want if your serious about RP

There's some parts you definitely won't want to do without Fast Travel.

For example, in the Thieves Guild, you get randomized "steal this thing" quests that send you racing from Riften to Solitude (an hour long journey if you hoof it) and back (two hours)

Now realize you have to do this five (5) times, to finish ONE quest. It would take you ten hours to do just ONE quest. Then consider there are three other quests like this where you have to carry out 5 randomized steals in far-away cities - giving you a total of forty (40) hours just to complete a single quest line. That's not the Thieves Guild main quest, either, that's just a single side event.

40 hours to finish 1 quest? Honestly, I like RP as much as the next person, but that's way too much travel time. Skyrim without fast travel would break the game if you wanted to 100% the Thieves Guild.

Not impossible, just very time consuming and requires a high level of commitment.

Once you know your way around skyrim it isn't that hard to get around of food quite quickly. I could get from any Point A to any Point B on the map in half an hour or less.

As for remembering why you're going somewhere, turning off the quests you aren't actively interested in provides a quick and easy reminder of what you were doing.

I fast travel when I'm bored or don't feel like dealing a walk right now, but now that I know my way around I actually walk places much more often, or skip what I know will be the boring part of the trip with fast travel.

Exactly! That is part of role-playing. You'll take up a quest and fast-traveling does break the immersion of how it would really be. When you actually journey across the map in real life for a couple hours in real time, imagine how long it would take your character in the game world from a lore perspective. From Windhelm to Amber Guard is over 300 miles! Imagine how long it would take a human to walk that distance in real life. It may take over a year, depending on how fast you walk and if you go in a straight line or not. So not using fast travel really makes you think, "Is this quest worth it?"
