Ixnay on the Arachnidae !

Like others have said, I doubt spiders will be super common.

Also, could you think of it as therapy and finally get revenge on all those damnable spiders?

The sarcasm of some aside, I do honestly wonder if Bethesda should release a simple patch/mod of their own for such things. I remember that Morrowind had some "demo" mods that Bethesda designed to show off the Construction Kit, and since it'd be fairly simple to turn off or replace the spider creatures in a cavern with a basic mod, would it be too difficult for Bethesda to do this themselves?

Normally I'd be with the notion that it should be the problem of the person and not the developer, but this is a very common phobia that affects many people, and we are dealing with massive spider creatures here that probably exemplify their traits. So perhaps Bethesda should take this request seriously. Especially considering the fact that this request has popped up multiple times.

Plus, webspinning spiders tend to leave people alone and not wander so much. Also, they can make such interesting webs. It's the hunters that need to be exterminated with extreme prejudice.

But seriously, I'm like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQJxbjXDYJk&feature=related when it comes to swimming in deep water. Didn't particularly enjoy the water stone part in Bloodmoon or the flooded room in Amnesia, but I was able to get through it. It's time you guys pulled up your pants, and grit your teeth.

Yeah but the Bethesda of then I don't think is the Bethesda of now, shouldn't expect Demo plugins ever much less something to that lenght, also im pretty sure those plugins were to show what could be done with the CS which was new at the time, we all get the deal now so they dont really need to :D

Actually, what with the newly created Creation Kit, demo mods might just be the perfect thing! Since it is Bethesda made enitrely, and I'm sure it has tons of new capabilities. Some examples to see what we can do is the perfect thing for this.

I used to be terrified of Druegh on Morrowind. And I still played. To this day, 4 years since I started playing, if I see one my arms will lcok up and i will run away.

Im afraid of spiders out of my mind too, but it is just a video game. Dont wear your 3-D glasses?

What of people with Hydrophobia (fear of water)? I can't see them realistically go around petitioning for Bethesda to remove the water in the game, just so they can beable to play it.

This. Will there eventually be petitions by groups representing every phobia on the planet? If so, the series will get really boring really fast as we can't have outside adventures for those with a fear of open places, can't go inside for the claustrophobics, no water for those who fear that, no Throat of the World so we don't scare those afraid of heights, and so on until you're left unable to add anything to the game because someone has a phobia about it.

Bring on the spiders, says I.

Hi guys

As a long term fan of the elder scrolls series (and fallout ,and CoC and...well, most things betheseda to be honest) I was very keen to see the trailer and I WAS looking forward to the game....but...

I've just seen a reason in the trailer why I may never be able to play the game.

Like MANY people, I'm a huge arachnophobe.
Yes, even at the age of 40-something.

In the old days, when games graphics weren't that realistic, I could cope with giant spiders in a game....they are after all a classic fantasy trope.
However, with graphics getting better, they're getting too realistic.
I could cope (just about) with Fallouts scorpions, but the spiders....no.

According to wikipedia : in Western societies as many as 55% of females and 18% of males are arachnophobic.

Hah, if anything maybe crushing spiders in a videogame is the perfect second step to overcoming your phobia. First I would start with some sort of exposure therapy. You have more than 7 months left to get to the point where you can kill a spider in a video game.

I've no doubt folks could (and no doubt will) argue its an 18 rating, but I thought I'd drop a line and request : Can you minimise (or at least sideline) the giant spiders in the game ?

Otherwise I (and many other fans with the same phobia) will never be able to buy /play the game ...

What if they are already being targets of quests? Go kill that spider for me, bring me 5 spider , etc, those would be recorded in dialogue and removing spiders should remove the quests too and all the references in rumors, possibly books.

I'm fine with spiders in Skyrim, as much as I fear them in reality I find them quite entertaining in video games and when I first heard that we'll have big spiders in Skyrim and that description of the spider boss fight I said wow! now that's a cool thing to look forward to. I think the bigger it is, the less it looks like reality. Also, if they make strange noises (like in every movie or game where I've met them) it paradoxically makes them even less real or frightening. Being mute and only hearing their hairy legs touching the cave floor would be much creepier for me.

I have a severe phobia of the undead.
No, seriously. Don't laugh!

Ever since I was a kid, after watching my brother play Resident Evil, I've been terrified of zombies.
Though, as I've gotten older, and played TES games for a while, I've learned to use that fear and turn it into a driving force to make myself hunt down undead and slaughter them for my own psychological benefit. It actually works. Instead of running away screaming, I pull out my Claymore and bash them to pieces. By making myself destroy them utterly, I'm proving that I am stronger than my fear and stronger than zombies. In a way, I'm attempting to make zombies scared of ME.

Now, in Skyrim, the giant spiders will totally creep me out, but hey, it's just a video game.
I'm sure the first few times I see them falling from the roof to devour me I'll scream like a little girl, but after a while, I'll slaughter them and learn to not be afraid.
I think, OP, that it is actually a good thing that there are giant spiders in the game. Combat your fear and never be afraid again! Completely risk free too (not dying from massive spider bites).

Take my advice for what you will...

I dunno if I'd consider myself arachnaphobic or anything, but spiders do freak the hell out of me. Still, watching the trailer, the spider in it didn't seem too menacing. No, they aren't going to be my favorite enemies, but it'll be fun cutting the crap outta them.

It is an extremely common phobia, and I admit I am a little surprised that it isn't taken into consideration when coming up with monster encounters, given how widespread it is. While I am not arachnophobic ( well, not where entertainment media is concerned- if I see one in my kitchen, I am less than delighted) I have two severely arachnophobic friends, and I know how much it can interfere with enjoying things that many of us take for granted.

I think when the game is finally released, people will be able to share info on what sorts of encounters can be found in the various dungeon types, ala Morrowind or Oblivion. Ie- avoid ancestral tombs if you don't like undead, avoid caves if you don't like will-o-wisps. Then you can plan your explorations around that info. Or of course, on the PC, you can mod them away, which seems like the best option to me.

I hope you can find a way to enjoy the game when it is released.

But it IS taken into account. Why do you think they went with a giant spider over a small spider or a giant spider over a giant bunny? Spider's are SUPPOSED to be scary and giant spiders are that much scarier. Anything that doesn't go by the two legs and two arms rule is pretty scary but if you add in multiple eyes and bristly hairs you've got yourself a monster, one that man has been freaked out by for centuries.

Now, I'm betting they didn't need to consider any of this consciously but they thought "Spider's are scary, let's put in a few huge ones, that'd be cool!" And there you have it. They are in the game DUE to their frightening nature and most likely will not be removed for the same reason. Be thankfull Arachniphobes, I would love to be as scared as you will be when I see them.

1. Go to a psychologist.
2. Talk with friends or family.
3. Mod it out.
4. Read books about it and see if it helps.
5. Learn to live with it.
6. Don't play Skyrim.

Those are your options.
The spiders aren't going to go away from the default game.
Neither are the zombies, or the skeletons, or the trolls or the dragons. Big spiders are really cool, yet creepy creatures.
Personally, I hate spiders irl, but I don't see the problem having them in a video-game. Just like I would hate zombies irl, I don't hate them in a video-game.

Anyway the 6 options I mentioned are what you can do. You choose which one.

In Oblivion there were spiders. Well kind of Spider Daedra. I think that since this is a very very common phobia beth should do stuff to make sure these people get good experiences. However I doubt they will take it out. This means that for people like you must either wait for a mod or get tips from people on the forums or otherwise on how to avoid spiders. We are friendly!

he was being sarcastic (i hope)

i myself have a fear of heights and pretty much any bug, but im capable of telling reality from virtual reality (at least until they create actual virtual reality simulators :P) so it doesn't freak me out mostly, there are a few games i dont play because they freak me out but thats the horror games where they are really really trying to freak you out.

modding out a creature in Morrowind or Oblivion is extremelly easy. I don't think the new tool will be less efficient in this. Surelly the first month there will be various mods removing spiders. Using the console to disable or kill them in game is another solution. About console players with arachnophobia... maybe a walkthrough will tell how to aboid spiders.

Thats funny! When I first got out of highschool I moved in with a highschool buddy of mine. One night I was laying in bed reading and I could hear my friend cursing and throwing things in his room. I got up to see what the problem was and when I looked into his room there he was standing on the night table beside his bed pitching books at a spider that was on his floor...lol I promptly walked over, in barefeet, squashed it with my foot and told him to get some sleep...lol
