Ixnay on the Arachnidae !

Post » Sun Jan 30, 2011 8:42 am

Hi guys

As a long term fan of the elder scrolls series (and fallout ,and CoC and...well, most things betheseda to be honest) I was very keen to see the trailer and I WAS looking forward to the game....but...

I've just seen a reason in the trailer why I may never be able to play the game.

Like MANY people, I'm a huge arachnophobe.
Yes, even at the age of 40-something.

In the old days, when games graphics weren't that realistic, I could cope with giant spiders in a game....they are after all a classic fantasy trope.
However, with graphics getting better, they're getting too realistic.
I could cope (just about) with Fallouts scorpions, but the spiders....no.

According to wikipedia : in Western societies as many as 55% of females and 18% of males are arachnophobic.

I've no doubt folks could (and no doubt will) argue its an 18 rating, but I thought I'd drop a line and request : Can you minimise (or at least sideline) the giant spiders in the game ?

Otherwise I (and many other fans with the same phobia) will never be able to buy /play the game ...

This has been address so many times, if its so crippling that you wont be able to play the game, then Im not sure what to tell you. its not like the entire game is wrought with Spiders, and if anything you can find out ahead of time where they are and at what points you'd deal with them.

None the less, Welcome to the Forums have a http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r105/Enoil/DarkFishyStick.jpg

How about this, get the PC version and make or get a mod that replaces or removes them. If you are stuck on a console than sorry dude.

I heavily suggest waiting for a mod, or making your own, to remove spiders, or replace their model with something else.
That is, if your on the PC...

I look forward to hunting spiders.

What of people with Hydrophobia (fear of water)? I can't see them realistically go around petitioning for Bethesda to remove the water in the game, just so they can beable to play it.

Mod them to turn them into fluffy bunnies, then you can have a fluffy bunny drop from the ceiling to svck out your innards. Then you'll need a mod for the holy hand grenade.

I hate deep ocean, the fear of drowning, and really large fish, but I still play the game. How do you think I felt when I was looking for the water stone in Bloodmoon! But nooooooo, no one cared.

I'm boobsophobic, when a girl flash some legs or boobs I'm not myself for a long period. Please make the women ugly like in Oblivion so I can play the game.

Seriously now, what's the rating to do with the spiders?

I doubt it. I can bet many fans with this phobia will buy and play the game anyway.

With the amount of arachniphobes here, I'm pretty sure a game developer will be able to make some sort of horror game based around spiders.

If you're afraid of giant digitalized spiders that you should be able to kill with ease... then I think Beth is doing a pretty good job.

I will never understand how a person can have their phobia affect them from a video game.
I doubt they would even consider removing something from the game because people have phobia.

It is an extremely common phobia, and I admit I am a little surprised that it isn't taken into consideration when coming up with monster encounters, given how widespread it is. While I am not arachnophobic ( well, not where entertainment media is concerned- if I see one in my kitchen, I am less than delighted) I have two severely arachnophobic friends, and I know how much it can interfere with enjoying things that many of us take for granted.

I think when the game is finally released, people will be able to share info on what sorts of encounters can be found in the various dungeon types, ala Morrowind or Oblivion. Ie- avoid ancestral tombs if you don't like undead, avoid caves if you don't like will-o-wisps. Then you can plan your explorations around that info. Or of course, on the PC, you can mod them away, which seems like the best option to me.

I hope you can find a way to enjoy the game when it is released.

I doubt they are very common. The one in the trailer is supposedly the "end boss" of a dungeon.

For some reason spiders don't bother me, in fact I think tarantulas are kinda cute.

However if you put a daddy long legs any where near me I will seriously freak the f@%& out!

I am so glad there are none of those in this game lol.

I'm afraid of anything with wings and stingers, so cazadors in NV freaked me out, but I killed them and got over this.

I respect the fact that you're afraid of them, but they're an enemy probably in dungeons so they're meant to be "Scary". I actually envy your fear of spiders. I'd love the feeling of conquering my fears in a cave.

I love giant spiders in RPGs, and like spiders in general, so I'm always surprised by how many arachnophobes there are here. I'd have thought there'd be more fear of snakes... maybe that group would be more vocal if there were giant snakes (a la Conan) in Skyrim.

Sorry, this is too good to not sig.

It'll give you good reason not to be too cavalier dungeon diving into strange places... Personally, I would think this would enhance gameplay experience (make it more realistic to you?)

I mean, sure you're scared of spiders, but havent you watched scary movies or played a scary game before? Its fun to challenge your fears in a risk-free and consequence-free environment!

Honestly, they're just bugs. And spiders are pretty harmless except for a few rare kinds.
