Jeremy Soule

I dunno, I've heard more visceral music from the God of War series. I guess if you haven't played the games, Skyrim's trailer music would make you go "Woooah, dude, that was intense!"

In your opinion.

I think Soule did a great job with Morrowind, and I like Oblivion's main theme precisely because it does sound a bit like Hans Zimmer, especially Gladiator or POTC. I love orchestral pieces like that. I felt like the music in Oblivion was a bit bland though, it was all just relaxing and too nice. I think the bland settting of Oblivion probably had something to do with it, now we're getting a potentially more interesting setting with Nords and maybe civil war and a lot more conflict, perhaps the soundtrack will have more feeling as the artist will have more interesting material to work with when composing.

Zimmer has broad stylistic range. (Everyone should own a copy of the Black Hawk Down soundtrack.) Soule apparently has a pony, which can do a trick. But there's a good chance he charges a lot less, and the result is still listenable even if it doesn't blow you away every time you hear it.

I turn off music while playing anyway. Kills immersion. :)

All the big games use Hans Zimmer or Inon Zur. As good as they are, I want Soule, Oblivion's music was great to me.

There are plenty of other awesome composers out there, I don't know why Bethesda keeps going back to Soule like a dog going back to lick its vomit.

That's a disgusting statement. I like Jeremy's work quite a lot. I always thought he could have written music for something like the LotR trilogy or Kingdom of Heaven. Morrowind's opening theme is epic on a Hollywood blockbuster scale. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and musical taste is of course subjective, but I think you and that other person are in the minority here.

My favorite "explore" track for Oblivion. Listening to it while running through the West Weald gives me chills. Very beautiful.

Is horrible yada yada, others would be better, you don't agree, etc. etc.

I have to make my speech, no one listens, your own opinion is better than mine because no one could possibly ever make music that you'd like better than some dude that's only ever done music for video games and a single film trailer.

The only problem I really had with Soule's music in Oblivion was that there was only one dungeon tune really. And dungeon diving is half the game, so it got a little tiresome to listen to afterwhile.

Agreed. Soule is really over-rated. TESIII's music was really nice, I'll give him that. TESIV - when I played the opening, my brother asked me - "What is that, a Pirates of the Caribbean game?"

There are plenty of other awesome composers out there, I don't know why Bethesda keeps going back to Soule like a dog going back to lick its vomit.

But, hey, if you want LotR generic fantasy, Soule's probably the right guy for the job.

Well I guess it's a matter of personal taste. I think Jeremy Soule is a fantastic composer and lots of his music are masterpieces compositionally. No offense but your brother is an idiot. Oblivion is fantasy..so ditto he is the best man for the job.

i liked his work on morrowind but didnt care too much for the oblivion music. Though i do give him props on some of the ambient music while walking through the forests.

How about Inon Zur? i really enjoyed his work on Dragon age.

 again?

For somebody who dislikes Soule so much, you sure seem to flock to his name quite often.

Now that is one name that I personally think is overrated. Lineage 2 had an amazing OST by Bill Brown and then Inon Zur came in and ruined the subsequent OST's for the expansions with his overuse of male/female choruses. Seriously what is the obsession with filling a soundtrack 80% chorus..it only gives the illusion of epicness.

Really? I played through all three games, and I honestly thought the soundtrack was crap, especially compared to Jeremy Soule.
To each his own.

OT: I hope it's Soule again, I loved the music for Morrowind, and Oblivion too. Who knows though, I guess it could be anyone at this point.

I thought Soule's music fit Oblivion quite well, but like others have said, it lacked emotion.

This is my idea of perfect, calm exploring music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkarTR6reoA

He is composing the soundtrack for this game. Why? It made TES $$$ and him and his wife $$$ so pretty much yes he is doing it. Quote me on it.

I think Hans Zimmer would be great. He has a very wide variety of styles and music, and almost all of it is great.

However, I wouldn't be disappointed in the slightest if Soule returned.

Because the Zimmer piece conveys a powerful feeling of isolation and loneliness, whereas the Soule piece conveys... a lack of energy, and way too many strings in the background. Soule can't really do emotion, and as far as I know he's never been able to.

Jeremy Soul has a talent for certain themes. Morrowind's main theme is just freaking inspiring. It makes my heart bump. Oblivion's main theme is almost as great. But as been said, his battle themes tend to be a bit monotonic and to be honest boring. They are overly dramatic at times too. While his some of his music is quite relaxing, fitting and beautifull, it also lacks emotion when such is needed.

He is a fine composer, but he ain't perfect.

String instruments are not emotions.

EDIT: And really, you can say that Soule's music has emotion, but look at how people talk about it. They'll use terms like "inspiring" or "beautiful" or "amazing" or "excellent" or "great"... but I have never seen anyone say that one of Soule's compositions made them feel lonely, happy, sad, wistful, hopeful, or anything like that. His music is made to sound like a certain kind of soundtrack music, not to evoke feelings or atmosphere.

And that piece conveys a powerful feeling of solitude and bliss. It was slow, methodical, and had many great transitions. Lol at the complains about too many strings..

It's how he used the strings along with other instruments that made the music great.

inspiring, beauty, excellence all lead to a certain type of emotion. Then you haven't spoken to many people about it because many of his soundtracks make people feel happy, or sad, or relaxed, or in some way relate it to their life and not just in the game world.
