Jet pack any good?

Post » Mon Jan 25, 2016 9:18 am

Just tried a jet pack: it just seems like a bigger jump than normal while it quickly exhaust AP and power core! So is it of any strategic use at all?

The companions probably don't use it, haven't tried ...

The jet pack is a necessity. Lost count of how many times it saved my posterior.

It can also be used to control Power Armor landing shockwave

Some people don't like it, but personally I think it's the most useful torso attachment mod. You definitely aren't going to by flying around the map or anything, but it can be incredibly helpful for boosting over objects that are in your way. In combination with the vented leg mods it can make for an excellent additional weapon as well. There are some areas of the map that are only accessible with the jetpack too. These areas are somewhat few and far between, but some of them are incredibly worthwhile. The secret room at the top of the interior of the Mass Fusion building is one example. That comes with an excellent reward (though it's a serious pain in the ass to get to).

I used it to pick up the Mass Fusion magazine without having to commit to the faction deciding quest applicable to that building.

I wasn't too impressed with it, either. I don't generally use power armor, though. If I ~were~ to use Power Armor, it's one of the mods I would probably choose, just for the occasional giggle it would give. There are mods that prevent AP drain and/or stop it from draining fusion cell power so you can basically fly around like Iron Man. If I weren't pushing 112 active mods, I might try that out just for the fun of rocketing around.

Jet pack will gain you access to various rooftops which have goodies to loot.

When combined with Ventilation leg modification (in stock game) you can use the jet pack to rise above the enemy high enough to slam down and cause immense damage to the enemy you are currently combating. Without damage to your character depending upon your current progress, skills, magazines read, etc.

I think that it changes up the gameplay a bit and gives me a few more options when fighting and exploring. It's a good bit of fun.

it's simply very fun, if you don't use fast travel ^^

you can go on different routes each time, climb buildings you've never been onto... run around the highways, without having to go down each time there is a gap

it's the thing that makes power armor useful and fun in this game for me

definitely a good tool to bring variety into the game, when you already played for hundreds of hours and know each corner of the map ^^

So perks that expand my AP will increase the Jump time? I have made it to 66 level with the same AP allocation I started with (I am not a big fan of vats but I do use it once in a while).

The jump time as it is now for me is almost (but not entirely) useless. Is there a mod that increases this jump time without making it "on" all the time?

I like the jump (rather than on all the time) as it reminds me of Microsoft's first 3d (fake 3d, it was all flat sprites that were x-crossed together to create the illusion of 3d objects such as the guns ) shooter where you would have jet packs that you could jump high with but not fly and used this to jump from one red "canyon altos" to another fighting giant ant aliens that burrowed up from the ground to surprise attack you.

I think this was in 1995 or maybe a few years latter?

I played the same free trial version (only about 10 canyon altos, about 10 minutes worth of game time ) over and over for hours! I never did see the finished game, I think the project was canceled.

I found it underwhelming. I find the medic pump much more useful.

It's possible I wasn't using it to its full benefit, but after slapping on a jet pack for the first time and then firing it up on a jump.. it burned through my AP in just a few seconds. I barely got 25 feet off the ground before I ran out (and this was with an 11 agility). I haven't played around with it much since the first few attempts, but I'll eventually get back around to testing it out more thoroughly.

OK. The first jump sets up the rest. If you do another jump right after the first and hold down your jump key you will fire the jets till you run out. I dunno maybe 25' or so. If you keep jumping after the first one, just tapping the key instead of holding it down, you can go considerably higher. Three stories is about what you can do this way. You can travel a long way from a high point by leaning forward and jumping continuously. You will learn the best frequency for your jump taps with time.

Works just fine.

To summarise all these comments;

Yes, to a degree it is useful. I too found it underwhelming considering the AP drain but in scenarios where its you vs deathclaw and you need that 5 seconds to for a stimpack to kick in

However, other PA bodymods are more specialised - dont get put off by the skill requirements - try a few higher tier ones and see which one suits you best.

I myself have 5 "specialised" X-01 PA i currently use (among other PA variants i dont use obviously) all tailored to different things on them, like having explosive vent legs on jetpack frames

Smurkes.

1 package of potato crisps

1 mirelurk meat

1 sugar bombs

Place meat and sugar bombs between potato crisps. Heat using Jet Pack flame for 1 second. Let cool. Enjoy.

If you do a running jump with the jetpack take a hit of jet and tap the boost button. You will be able to fly for a very long distance.

This is the right way to use the jetpack, you get so much more out of it once you learn the tapping. Best place for practise is the Mass Fusion building and I definitely recommend it. I thought the jetpack was meh too before I figured this out.

The tapping tip seems to be the only one of use and when not having a companion. Just tried to stuff Nick Valentine in a PA with jet and he won't jet up or over the simplist things. So downsides are quick drain of core and companion can't follow.

Just did a MILA quest and placed one just below the highway in diamond city at the train section jumping all the way up from building to building. (Dismissed the companion). Holstered weapon before jumping though! It costed half a core so it's probably best to upgrade core use.

The running jump does not seem to work!

It's enough to be mildly interesting by default. With mods/perks that add to its burn time, it's OP. Especially coupled with the blast vents mod that adds radial splash damage when you hit the ground in power armor...you see where this is going.

2 Fusion Cores can pretty much spell the end of all life in the Commonwealth. Post-Apocalyptic Bunny-Hopping Armageddon.

I think the main mistake that some might do, is that they try to boost from the ground

it's important to do a 'double jump'... you'll get way more power and momentum, if you start boosting from mid-air after a normal jump
