Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Boston Dynamics (Big Dog), Etc.

So, we have all of this focus on the Institute.
But, what about all of the other advanced technology labs in the Boston area?

I was watching an old video of Big Dog, the JPL/DARPA?Boston Dynamics project, and I got to thinking. Will we see any other locations/factions (aside from the BoS) that are dealing with advanced technologies? A simple search shows quite a number of robotics companies in the area.
This makes sense. People researching at MIT, Harvard and so on will need to get jobs outside of academia, some day, and with ties to the area, some should be based there, even in the FO universe.
Can we expect to see tech rivals to the institute? Or will we need to collect any advanced tech from other robotics and tech labs in the Boston area, either for or to use against the Institute?

Since the Fallout universe separated from our universe in the 1950s, anything that was built in the past 50 years will most likely not have occurred in the Fallout universe. If Bethesda decides to add some laboratory that exists in this universe and built after 1960, then it is a case of convergent history. Of course, there is the issue that the bombs dropped in 2077 so lots of laboratories would have been shut down before the bombs dropped so there might have been a JPL or DARPA laboratory in Boston, but was demolished in 2045.

Except for the universities and a few outfits like Bolt, Beranak and Newman, most of the high tech in the Boston area developed out on the Route 128 loop. As starkaos said, that grew up in the 60's, but if Bethesda sees fit to include some of it they could always justify the survival by them being outside of Boston proper.

Not sure why Boston would have been targeted anyway. I would think they would have gone after the Minuteman sights and airbases in eastern Mass, but what do I know.

Boston would be targeted because it is a major port city, with military bases in the harbor. Then you have higher learning institutions and tech start ups. These are all things to be targeted, because it would cripple the region, and keep the enemy back in the dark ages.

Of course I know about the divergence, Starkaos. However, there was a part of my post that addressed this. It is simple to see that because of places like MIT and Harvard being located in the area, there would be tech startups in the Boston area, comprised of those who had attended. This way they are local and can easily hire grads of tech programs at the aforementioned schools, as well as tap them for knowledge if they run into problems. Most of the Boston tech companies we see in our universe were founded by MIT and Harvard (who have joint programs with MIT) graduates. So, what about the lore says that they would build their businesses elsewhere?

And just as an example. I live in San Diego. There is a huge military presence here. Therefore there is a lot of industry to support it, with many of the founders and employees of those companies being ex-military.

Aside from MIT, we also have the Wentworth Institute of Technology- est. 1904 and Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology- est. 1908

If an area is known for something, it becomes a magnet for that type of industry/culture.
While there is no direct information confirming this and it is indeed speculation, it seems plausible, given the way culture/people/the world works.

But just because a city supports a certain type of industry doesn't mean that the same laboratories and research will be conducted. It is up to Bethesda to determine which advanced laboratories we have in Boston will be in Fallout 4 and create advanced laboratories that only exist in Fallout 4 due to history diverging in the 1950s and the bombs dropping in 2077. After all, how many buildings do you know of that are still around that were built 62 years ago? Laboratories can go out of business and demolished for some other building in that amount of time.

of course it is up to bethesda, this is a given.
Buildings? I'm talking about a regional culture whose seeds were planted in the area at the turn of the 20th century. Cheers.
