For an absolute fact I know many people that have gotten jobs at grocery stores, libraries, and so on, with absolutely no experience.

i've tried every grocery store i know of, once i was even told to go to their website to apply because they had no application forms left... after i got home and looked at their website i saw they didn't even have a place to apply for a job on their website... :verymad:

Jobs were hard to come by and the ones there were paid dike.
With no good scholarship programs and crappy guidance counselors at my school
no internets at the time to do research and ifgure out other options
i joined the military, ultimately.

I traded them four years of my life, just like a lot of college peopel do.
BUT i learned a skill that was useful and which i still use today for gainful employment, unlike what most get out of college.

the military isnt for everyone. but youd be surprized how many good (see also: not killing or having people try to kill you) jobs there actually are in the military.

good luck to any of you looking for work.

my diabetes and icktheosis vulgaris makes me an unlikely candidate for joining the military

the degree is in Computer Network Administration and Security (Unix/Linux option)
my preferred career would be working with computers, but the closest lead i've had to that which didn't require 2-4 minimum years work experience in that field wanted me drive for a bit more then an hour to participate to a job seminar in the opposite direction of the location i actually applied to work at and stated that they didn't guarantee anyone an interview or job, and the worst part was that it was for Apple in an area with 10 times higher crime rate then where i currently live

Spoiler
this website says these statistics are for one of the safer areas in that awful location

unfortunately a majority of the places i visit tell me they only accept applications online... (blockbuster just to name one that told me they don't accept applications at the store)

Unfortunately, that is part of the svckiness of first jobs. You have to get experience and get skills, and get connections in order to land a job in the posher locals. You are young, and likely single, and without kids. You are exactly the fit for the jobs in the seemy parts of town (sorry, but its true). Unless you want to get more loans, more debt, and a higher degree, then your starting off job is likely gonna svck rocks.
Just don't settle for that post. Keep looking for better.....keeping in mind that if you are not pulling your weight at this low-end job (because you're always looking for better on company time, while bad-mouthing the boss) then your references and connections will suffer too.
Can you say "flaming, whirling death spiral?".

recently i've been thinking about how companies call their selves "equal opportunity employers", equal opportunity itself sounds nice because it implies that there is an equal chance for everyone who applies to be offered a job, but it's only meaning is equal opportunity based on race and beliefs, so it seems to just a catch phrase to make the company sound nice.

I mean this in no way to sound racist, but in my experience "AA/EEOC/EOE" in an employment add means the company actively prefers hiring minorities over more qualified members of the "majority."
