Jobs Announced!

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 7:38 am

I just read my mate's Xbox Magazine and it said some new features-
1. NPCs now do specific jobs and tasks

I am going to reserve my excitement until the game comes out and we know that what we will get is what they said. they said the exact same thing about jobs when they were doing OB, but that turned out to be an npcs standing in a stable and occasionally using a rake or broom, the difference this time is that theyre saying. but no, we really mean it this time. not desparraging, just making sure that those who are new to tes know that we have been promised this before.

Exactly, the features sound awesome, but we don't know how they'll exactly playout. I'm sure this time around it will be fine, but I remember watching the demo videos for Oblivion for the first time. Dynamic Shadows and AI! Then playing the dumbed down version. One of the first things I did was find that book store, and it was a let down. Oblivion vanilla is ok though considering.

What a 100% useless and boring future Im never going to use. Honestly I cant belive anyone would spend their time cutting wood in a videogame.

Someone hates lumberjacks, delicious pancakes, and maple syrup.

Blasphemer.

If I can craft stuff like staffs and arrows and other wooden things from wood, I'll spend a fare share of time cutting down trees.

Maybe we will be allowed to work making beer or wine...then we can start an uprising by poisoning it and making it seem like some one else poisoned it.

Proffesions are an amazing addition to the game imo. My ideal trade? Commoner, of course. Or maybe a skooma dealer...

The real question is: Will NPC's sleep under the covers now?

They might be Warm-Blooded to begin with, and have no need for covers.

This Post was written in just such a way so as to promote the idea that there were Jobs being announced at Bethesda and to find out it's this, is just annoying. This was released in like the 2nd Game Informer article over a month ago. I was eager to hear about Bethesda openings but this .... (sigh)

Question. Why would we want to cut wood? I like this idea but I hope it plays into a larger picture of role-playing and in particular a hardcoe mode. The idea that we can cook food gives me hope that we will at least have a mode where we are forced to eat, drink and sleep. Wood? Well I'm not real sure.

Didn't we know this from before?
Glad that it's re-confirmed then I guess :P

In any case, I love how NPCs are coming more to life. Job is a huge part of that.

first time I have ever heard it, How are there no threads about this besides this one!!!!?

2. Players can perform these (e.g. woodcutting)

I think we all play these games to got away from our job or life.

So its possible to not only murder everyone in Skyrim but to ruin their economy and leave them languishing in a state of destitution first?!?!?! WOOHOO!!! I can get my community-scale torture on!!

WIll it be reflected in the architecture and the citizens?
E.g.: I want to see the houses start falling apart and the people dressed in rags... I want to see an increase in the number of beggars milling about listlessly... weeping as they struggle in vain to piece together the jagged shards of their broken dreams with their filthy, sore covered hands!!!! Oh Gods!! The poowwerrr the poowerr!! YESSS!!!!! SSUFFFFERRRRR!! Sufferrr!!!!!.... *phew*

The craftybits mod for Oblivion has this; you don’t cut down trees (technical issues and resource issues) but can cut staves, arrow shafts and poles from trees, for making bows, arrows and furniture in the next step.
Quite nice to be self supplied.

The job part is probably this, you can gather resources as npc can, then sell it or use it for crafting, pretty much like harvesting plants for alchemy except here you use a axe on wood and pickaxe on ore to get shafts and ebbony metals for making ebony arrows.
Morrowind had working glass and ebony mines, but none was operational in Oblivion.

Now the sabotage part sounds scripted, why would you do it outside a quest anyway, far better recruit more workers to increase production and then steal from them the mill.

1. NPCs now do specific jobs and tasks
2. Players can perform these (e.g. woodcutting)
3. Players can now sabutage businesses such as lumber mills which in return damages the town's economy

My question is: What happens when a dragon burns the lumber mill or kills the lumber jack?
Can this happen?
Will it also affect the towns economy?

With dragons rife across the countryside what effect, if any, will the continual destruction of towns and villages have on game play? On the one hand it could provide a convincing motive to go after the dragons, on the other hand, much like Oblivion Gates, it could prove to be nothing but an annoyance to anyone not following the main Q.
