Journalist Character Screens: Quakecon, London, Gamescom?

Post » Fri Aug 19, 2011 12:30 am

You can make something look interesting and unusual without making their eyebrow muscles taking up most of their face.

Well, given how much the Dunmer have been scowling at every other race for god-knows how long, it's only logical that their eyebrow muscles are strong enough to bend steel.

What the HELL is wrong with the female Dunmer's eyebrow ridge? Why is it so freakin Thick? Is she an Elf or a Neanderthal???!

Have you seen a real life elf or something to compare this too? I dont get it. It's a fantasy game. Stop thinking dunmers have to look human with a blue tint.

That's the thing, the heavy brow on her looks more man than mer.

I like it take away the heavy brow and people would be saying dunmer look to much like the bosmer like they were before this pick. The brow is much less pronounced in the other shots so id say that was a chocie they look distinct but can look similar and its good.

No, it's Bosmer that look too much like Dunmer.

The brow is a little heavy- but yes, as people have said before me- it's customizable. These journalists didn't have alot of time to customize their characters to their liking. They did a few basics, but that's about it. I'm sure the ridge will still be a bit of a dominant factor but you can probably smooth it out really well.

Why does that new argonian lady look a little cute? I am in no way a furry or anything I kind of just wanna give her a little hug and send her on her way to slay dragons and save Tamriel.

Denial: A river in Egypt.

Different skin tone, different ears, different eyes, different facial structure. They really don't.

Could just be their default eyebrow. Remember, these journalist only had about an hour.

Yeah, these were my thoughts too, until I went back and looked at that Dunmer thief Bethesda posted a while back.
He too seems to be sporting some rather heavy browridge. Granted he's in the middle of slicing someone from groin to gullet, yet still ...
Very supra orbital.

Perhaps this is going to be a new distinguishing feature for our beloved Dunmer.

It very obviously is. It lends them distinction and personaity.

I agree one-hundred percent. I find myself constantly staring at the IGN Dunmer.

Oh what beautifully vicious dark elves I'll create.

At first I disliked IGN's Dunmer, but then I was like "Jesus christ I always secretly wanted to create a psycho Dark Elf." He is amazing...

Not a person, a race. That permascowl will certainly make them distinct from other races. Whereas you expect a dapper Imperial to say "How does the day greet you?", you'd expect a Dunmer to say "GET THE [censored] OUT OF THE WAY, N'WAH" just by looking at them. The bland, generic races of Oblivion all lacked that certain something that set them apart from one another.

Permascowl? That sounds pretty shallow to me. I fail to see a cookie cutter attitude gives a race "personality." One thing I like about TES is that it doesn't typically do that. The thing about customization is that you can customize your character, not have a cookie cutter template based on what race you pick. I'm not saying ridges like that are bad, but any reaction to someone with them as if it's a part of their personality would be more racism on the other's part, and not an aspect of the Dunmer's personality.

Please stop missing the point, it degrades us all.

"Personality" in the sense that they have something that is personal/specific to them. There's tons of customization options available. That has been demonstrated extensively by the screenshots we've seen. We've had three Argonians thus far, each evoking different reptilian critters: "Lizzle-Bob" looks decidedly like a dinosaur, the dude with the horns is quite draconic, and Morgan Webb's looks somewhat like a slightly goofy skink. It's clear that there will be tons of variety within each race.

But what's truly important is that none of them feel bland and generic. A Bosmer will look different from a Dunmer no matter what. In Oblivion for their few differences they looked rather samey.

I have never heard of personality used in this context before. Since I've always heard it used in reference to how people act, I totally misunderstood.

Perhaps you prefer Oblviion's Altmer, Dunmer and Bosmer that had the same basic facial characteristics, only with different skin tones, hair color and eye color?

At least now they will each finally have their own unique bone structure and facial features.

that dog is the best dog. like straight up, the fact that Bethesda's finally figured out how to make a dog that kind of looks like a dog is super nice.

also i think people are forgetting that Oblivion did not in fact ship filled to the brim with Monster Hunter armor and lop-eared elf minis. if you want PRETTY ELFS play a different race or wait for Japan. elves in TES are not elves in Warcraft.

also i'm digging how the orcs actually look a bit more merish this time around. technological advancements are a wonderful thing.

You misunderstand what I'm saying. I have never seen personality used to describe looks before, but rather how someone acts. The new features make them unique, but don't affect how each character behaves. I wasn't saying I didn't like that each race looks more unique now.

I didn't mind Oblivion's looks, but I do love what we've seen of Skyrim so far. :celebration:

The person citing pretty Altmer was directly quoting TES lore.

Edit:
Sorry for the double post, I must have had the thread open in two tabs.

I think when some have said they feel these new screens show more "personality," I think what they mean to say is that the faces are much more expressive.

When you look in the eyes of some of these characters (especially the ones in the official screens that were hand crafted by Bethesda's character artists), you get a little bit more of a sense of what that character has been through, what type of person they are. The eyes and faces are much more expressive compared to Oblivion's character models IMHO.
