Jousting?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 7:01 pm

I liked the Arena in Oblivion. From fighting to betting in matches, to betting, I felt that it was a nice addition to the game. Since Skyrim is coming up, I was wondering what you guys were hoping for. Perhaps another arena?

Or even maybe something new? ---Like Jousting?
I don't really see how the game would let you participate in jousting; I just think it would be something fun to bet on.
Personally, I would LOVE to see a couple of shirtless Nords sitting on Bears, stabbing at each other with lances the size of Telephone poles.

Yes, I said Bears. This is Skyrim, horses are for sissies.

Yes to Jousting, Mostly because if jousting is in then mounted combat is most likely in.

So you want jousting, which includes one unconfirmed feature and one confirmed not in feature. Bold to say the least.

I don't think this is happening. I also don't care for jousting.

Edit: I, of course, would like to see arenas return though.

Jousting doesn't seem like Skyrim to me, even the shirtless Nords on bears kind.

I’m not saying necessarily NEED jousting. I'm just saying that I would find it amusing to watch a few Nords attack each other while riding bears.

I would be happy if there was only an Arena.

Yes, if it was a proper, old style joust - not the relatively modern French (and renfaire) version with two horseman and lances.
Square arena, a score of combatants, use any means necessary to be the last one mounted!

Like in Mount & blade?, well, as far as it's played with horses... but I would preffer fighting pits (more fitting to Skyrim in my own opinion).

Jousting? As in with lances? As in spears used on horseback?
I'd say yes to jousting just for the spears.

No to jousting. That's not appropriate for this environment and province. I personally would love to see some sort of death match where the player has to take on bears with his/her bare hands! The Arena is also considered a faction by BGS if I'm not mistaken. If they could make it appropriate for Skyrim, it would be great.

Vikings seem to be the close-quarters duel kind of people. Get some armor, an axe, and some mead. Last one with a head wins. Jousting is more fitting for a chivalric society, which Skyrim really isn't. Maybe Cyrodiil, likely High Rock, but I don't think Skyrim shares those values of honor and fair play. It's only survival of the fittest in a place like that.

I would want these more so.

In Skyrim i think there should be more minigames like the following:

There should be something like an Archery range (perhaps a horseback archery course if we have mounted combat). Getting a perfect score gets you a really good bow.

There could be a hunting competition of some type.

Maybe a long-distance race with no rules (meaning you can "slowdown" your opponents by any means necessary). well 1 rule: no fast travel or youll come in last automatically or something. Winner gets a really fast horse

I agree...The only arena type of games that I ever read in book (years ago) about the Norse or Vikings were that on special occasions they would put together fights between giant bulls and bears, and bet on the outcome...
Duels between men were just that...Close quarters unmounted single combat with weapons of the combatants choice to the death...

The 1981 film Excalibur featured a joust/tournament that perhaps would fit the aesthetic used in Oblivion and mayhaps Skyrim too. This film goes all over the shop in references to time periods (and is based on the French romanticised Arthurian legends, boo), so is just as much fantasy as the ES worlds.

If you look carefully, you see that Emperor Uriel Septim wins this particular fight ;)

No to sport-jousting. That just won't fit in Skyrim. But a big yes, honkin' yes to being able to thunder down on churlish men-at-arms on a prize warhorse, couch my lance tightly, and drive the point deep into their mercenary hearts with all the pounds-per-square-inch of force that a charging stallion can muster.

It would be cool to be able to compete in more than one arena, for one maybe the change of scenery? But mostly because I'd kill off a team of gladiators in one town and I'd have to move on to the next :P.

Pffft what makes you think Nords will be honorable enough to joust? they'd jump off the horse pick up a club and then fight :P

Nords on bears? Please not, I'd assume they're all from the internetz then.

No, seriously, bear cavalry would be almost as bad as mounting dragons.

Jousting just doesn't seem like a Nord thing. Doesn't even seem like an Imperial thing. The only people I can imagine enjoying it to its full extent are the Bretons.

I'd rather the arena had some more varied and difficult enemies/rulesets. It would be great to have bouts where you don't get to choose your weapon like in Fallout New Vegas, or where the weapon given to both of you is random and can include bare hands.

..They also need to sort out the battle raiment - it just looks girly. Imo it should look more gritty and put together than a fresh peice of armour. Perhaps a chest plate and hand wraps with some old greaves and a helmet.

That's a bit of a common misconception, about vikings anyway, Bethesda can make anything out of "their" Nords.

The spear or lance was still the most common used weapon by vikings and their battle tactics could be highly strategic and distance-keeping centred. Just look at Hastings were Guillaume/William feigned a retreat with his cavalry to break the Anglo-Saxon line of CQ axemen.

Uuuuh, William and his army were Normans, not Vikings...
