JRPGS: Why do so many in this forum dislike them?

To think about it, JRPG heroes make a bit more sense than WRPG heroes. WRPG http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1930495

Did you not grow up with Super Mario Bros? :whistling:

What?!

Sir, you just blew my mind. It's time to rethink my whole life.

Well then I guess I could say that Japanese entertainment doesn't appeal to me except for Super Mario and Dragon Ball Z.

Resident evil? Street Fighter? Megaman? Metroid? LoZ? Pikmin? Golden Sun? I could probably continue.

You do realise the person who designed it worked on Final Fantasy for years, right? In fact, it's the actual creator.
Obviously it's going to have the same archetypes that plague final fantasy. The same ones that make up the stereotypical JRPG features, which really just proves my point. Final Fantasy is not the be all and end all of jrpgs.

No, I didn't realize that, and quite frankly it doesn't matter. It's still a separate game. Somebody such as myself who just picked up the game with no knowledge of Lost Odyssey's background will judge the game based on the game itself, not by it's creator. A game with cliche JRPG characters should not get a simple slap on the wrist and pat on the head just because it was made by one of the creator's of Final Fantasy and suddenly be excused because of it.

It's a separate game made by the guy who made the series that created all of those jrpg archetypes and cliches. I'm not excusing them because of that, I'm simply explaining that's the reason why it's cliche.

I never played a Resident Evil game, they scared me too much as a child and the new one seemed pretty boring. Street Fighter was pretty fun but I was not really a fan. Never played the rest. I also am not a huge fan of pokemon.

'Cause we're xenophiles and it's fun.

Seriously, though; I just never got into them. I like Chrono Trigger and Lufia 2 a lot (and the Sailor Moon RPG, but I don't know if I still like it), but I didn't like the other ones I tried. It could also be because I just don't really like anime anymore, so it's kinda weird to have an interactive version of something I just don't like.

Sonic? Star Fox? Metal Gear Solid?

Now i have played Metal Gear Solid komrade and i can say this:

Plot is difficult, but not impossible to get.
why they have to have their flashbacks in ancient pixel view is stupid imo.
gameplay is best in 4, everything is well polished and better made than in 1 2 or 3.
2 made me angry, very angry, the constant philsophy preaching just really got stupid, the ending svcked.
3 was a respectable game, the added realism stuff was ok, but i didnt need most of it.
1 i havent finished yet, but i've read the book which makes much more sense, i've beaten psycho mantis, he's overrated. "Woooooo, im breaking the fourth wall...soooo scary..."
Metal Gear Online svcks.
never played any of the PSP ones.
4 is the bar for PS3 games, they should be as good as this game, or not even try.

as for Star Fox, i have 64, but that is as far into the series as i have gone.

same goes for Sonic, i played the Genesis ones, and that was it.

on topic of JRPGS, its not that i dont hate them, but i go into other genres, ill dip into my FF1 and 2 every so often and i want to play Golden Sun TLA again some day, but level grinding aint on my agenda....for any game.

What? What do you call Seth? She may not be swooning but she plays the same role, i.e. always being overly happy or excited while the main character is always moaning and being sad.

No no you said that it fit the bill completely

Here you are admitting she's not the swooning type so she doesn't fit the bill perfectly as you so claim :P

I like some JRPG's but Idk it just seems like you have to force yourself into playing them. One I remember playing was the .hack series... I watched the anime (SIGN) but it ends then picks up in the games so I played the games to see what happens.. the first four games weren't too bad. Then they started the series up again with GU and that was [ littered with cliches everywhere.. Emo angsty teenager, Shy healer girl, mysterious guy etc. uggh I haven't played another JRPG since.

Do you actually play games at all? Just wondering. Because like, half of the games out these days are made by Japanese companies, not only jRPGs.

I do play games. Just not really Japanese ones. But I assure you that if I had a PS3 I would probably play a lot more, I've always wanted to play Metal Gear Solid 4.

Because they are inferior?

Seriously, I've never been fan of any JRPG's the first and last one I played had that emo teen with huge sword and tedious
turn based combat (nothing against turn based games). It was on PS1, and must have been one of the Final Fantasy games.

After that game I never wanted to touch the genre again.

Yes, but I dislike of all that "Lets stand in line and charge against each other in turns".
I'm huge fan of turn based games, but that is something where I draw the line.

No, no. It is just how the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zmj8VFDupus is done in FF games.

edit - I don't see any tactic behind FF combat. You just keep attacking and hope that the bad guys die first.

Depends on the FF, but mostly that's what happens except for specific bosses. That doesn't happen every jrpg though. I think it's pretty stupid to dismiss an entire genre because you didn't like one entry. I mean, I play FPS, RTS, Fighting games, WRPGs and all sorts else. Would you not play Fallout 3 because you disliked Two Worlds? Or not play Dawn of War because you didn't like Starcraft?

Wow, this thread really ballooned over night and throughout the day. I've already stated my view, so no reason to iterate it. I would just like to say that I agree with those people who judge an entire Genre based on one or two different series, even if those series are two of my favorite series. At least this thread has taught me a bit about my fellow gamers ^^. Even when you're a fan of a genre, that doesn't meant you're a fan of all the sub-types of that genre. That, and not everyone enjoys diversity. Honestly, the only type of game I don't play are FPS, and since some people consider Bioshock an FPS, and I'm sure Bullet Storm will be considered an FPS, I'll be able to say I even play a few games in that genre. Again, when your roots in gaming stretch back to the very beginning of gaming(atari and frogger ftw!), you learn to enjoy all games, because back then, there just wasn't that many games to play.

Also, please keep flames to a minimum, I'm really enjoying reading all the responses in this thread(even though I disagree with roughly half of them), it's fairly informative and fun to read :). I'd hate to see such a massive thread locked(Especially since it is appearing to be the first thread I've created that might reach the max amount of posts and be continued in a second thread).

Say What?

It's really not hard to understand. Fallout is an RPG and so is Two Worlds, if you played an RPG you didn't like why does it make sense to swear off the entire genre?
