JRPGS: Why do so many in this forum dislike them?

Post » Fri Mar 11, 2011 5:07 am

So, I've noticed in more then a few threads over the last month or so that I've been coming here(wish I had discovered this place sooner, I used to just hang around the Morrowind Forums, and it got really boring after a while), that a lot of people here truly dislike JRPGS. Honestly, I had never even really heard the term before here, but I've thus far been able to deduce it stands for Japanese Role Playing games. I've also deduced it is mostly games that originated in japan(yep, I'm smart, right? right? Please? lol), and have been brought to the U.S.

So my question is, is why do you all dislike them so much. What is it about them that you don't like? Also, what games ARE JRPGS, lol, as I have rarely payed attention to where a game came from. If it was good, I played it, if it svcked, I ignored it. So far, one of the main complaints I've seen, is the ridiculous looks of the characters. Can't say I really understand that much. Not every character in a game can look the same as every character in other games, or things would start to decline/stagnate rather fast.

JRPGs are games like Final Fantasy. Many here dislike them simply because Bethesda RPGs are worlds apart from JRPGs, therefore the denizens of this forum typically have drastically different tastes.

I like pretty much any RPG game. In fact, I like any type of game that has a good character generation system.

I like them. I've been playing Star Ocean: The Last Hope for a while and I enjoy it quite a bit. As for the characters... umm.. Lyme was cool, 'kay, at first. She gets annoying after a while. Meracle is also interesting and so is Sarah... it seems more like the girls are more... out there personality wise, except Reimei who is just awesome. The game rocks for the most part though imo.

Way too linear for me, I want to play my own character, not some spiky haired git with a sword that rivals only his own hair in size.

Western video game company that produces a popular western RPG series has many fans of the western RPG-type gameplay and don't like JRPGs, what a surprise.

Basically the two types of gameplay are quite different and many fans of one don't really care for the gameplay of the other.

I like jrpg's actually. Chrono Trigger, Tales of Symphonia, Final Fantasy 12, Legend of the Dragoon. There's others I just can't think of em. There's always at least one character who I like in every jrpg I play. Don't mind the spiky hair, personalities, or the outlandish things in em at all.

The only JRPG that I've played was Lost Odyssey and that one was decent but personally I'm just not a fan of them  for the fellowing reasons.

-Many use turn based combat that I dislike but not necessary despise; just not a fan.
-To many uses random encounters which I find annoying.
-Many find myself including the plots preditable (Though this can apply to any genre).
-Characters that are cookie cutter cliches or lack luster (Once again may be appied to WRPG's or any other works of fiction).
-Linear gameplay and no choices that is expected out of "RPG's" which is a term in its self being debated on what it means to be a roleplaying game and popular games like ME can be considered linear depending on standards or perspective.
-Art/clothing styles but this is a case of http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/YourMileageMayVary.

Overall it depends on ones taste.

Different style conflict different taste. It is not surprising that this being a WRPG forum, such status on JRPG exist.

They honestly scare the [censored] out of me. It my be the questionably feminine male characters, the awesomez crazy hair, or the oddly upbeat attitudes.

It's pretty obvious really. As others have pointed out, these are the forums of a developer that creates a vastly different style of RPG from JRPGs, and so many people who are members here are going to have tastes more suited for the former.

Personally, I like both, but I absolutely love a good JRPG. No other type of game can draw me in as much.

I like both kinds of RPG. I am most nostalgic about early (Sega Genesis and PSX) JRPGs because that's what I grew up with.

JRPGs are games like Final Fantasy. Many here dislike them simply because Bethesda RPGs are worlds apart from JRPGs, therefore the denizens of this forum typically have drastically different tastes.

Bethesda's RPG's aren't my favourites actually, I much prefer BioWare's stuff personally. But I just don't like JRPG's. It's for varying reasons, mostly the gameplay just doesn't appeal to me, though the truly god awful acting and completely ridiculous plots in many FF games also puts me off. From what I've seen of FF8 and 10, I can't fathom why anyone actually likes those games.
