[RELZ] Julan, Ashlander Companion [No.13]

Post » Sun May 08, 2011 7:09 am

MortX, have you talked to the other Ashlander tribes (hint: particularly the one she came from) about Mashti yet? (Doesn't matter whether or not you have Julan with you.) If you have, then go talk to the one person everyone in the Ahemmusa camp told you NOT to bother. Then talk to one of the people in the Ahemmusa camp about the topic that brings up.

Hope that helps!

Ugh ... of course it would be the one I'M not supposed to talk to ... silly me ... so I talked to Rakeem who gave me the 'story' ... I was told I would have to wait for something to happen ... waited several days ... slaughtered the Ahemmusa, Shani, Mashti and Julan in frustration ... and ... well I feel alittle better.

Ugh, sorry, something about this quest annoys me ... but am I supposed to do anything after speaking to Rakeem ... I'd imagine look for this cave, but I'm given no directions, hints or even of a name of the place ...

Let's see. It's been two days since I played that part, you think I would remember in great detail, but for some reason that part's a little foggy to me, so let me go in game and find the journal entries about that part. ... Time passes...

Okay, I think the next thing you have to do is be outside (outside of a town area or an ashlander camp) with Julan at night. He should talk to you about religion, and depending on what answers you've given him previously, you may end up rather deeper in a romance with him. Or not! I don't know, I always take the romantic angle.

THEN you can go into the cavern of the incarnate, provided you take Julan with you. Go ahead and pick up Moon & Star, Julan will freak out and the next part of his quest will start. After that I found it all really easy going.

If Mashti won't talk to you immediately when Julan pulls his disappearing act, talk to Shani first, and then I believe you should be able to talk to Mashti. Mashti will tell you where Julan may be hiding (don't worry, you don't need another miner's pick, but I would recommend either levitation potions or being able to levitate!) And if you get easily frustrated in confusing caves, remember to look up. (And if you have a problem finding a token of friendship, try using the ring to contact Julan. )

(The evidence that you need to provide Julan regarding SOMEONE being involved in the killing of Han-Sashael is rather emphatically given to you after you find Julan when he teleports away so don't worry about that.)

Hopefully I'm not stepping on Kateri's toes to help you out with a bit of a walkthrough!

I figured it's been far too long since I posted a Julan story. :D

Even now he can on rare occasion have something entirely new for me to laugh at.

I naturally name this one:

'Stupidest Hat!'

Spoiler
Julan: Smugglers and Daedra clearly don't mix well. It's a good thing we were here to help that Ingwold person. But that is definitely the stupidest hat I've ever seen.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l12/Daedra_Lord/Morrowind2010-08-1320-41-05-99.jpg

MC: Yeah, it's almost as atrocious as that tacky skirt. Stupidest hat indeed.

Julan: Who would wear something like that? Only a Wood Elf surely...

MC: I think YOU ought to wear it!

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l12/Daedra_Lord/Morrowind2010-08-1320-56-42-92.jpg

Julan: Oh no. I don't think so. It's definitely more YOUR sort of hat!

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l12/Daedra_Lord/Morrowind2010-08-1320-56-47-27.jpg

MC: I think I'll MAKE you wear it!

Julan: You just try, you s'wit, and you'll regret it!

MC: ... c'mere you!!!

Julan: Arrgh! Get off, you n'wah!!!

System: In the brief struggle that ensues, Julan emerges victorious.

Julan: Hah! Like I said, it's more YOUR sort of hat.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l12/Daedra_Lord/Morrowind2010-08-1320-49-32-22.jpg

MC: You know, before you get so smug, try taking a closer inspection of yourself.

System: Julan glances quickly off to both shoulders and then below

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l12/Daedra_Lord/Morrowind2010-08-1320-49-56-60.jpg

Julan: What are yo-... oh I hate you... YOU PESTERING F'LAH!

System: Another struggle ensues between you and Julan, but twice as long as the previous.

Julan: Hahah! Oh wait. Curses of a Guar! Stupid, stupidest hat!

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l12/Daedra_Lord/Morrowind2010-08-1321-00-02-54.jpg

MC: Forget your fancy hat. This gruesome, loathsome, tacky skirt... I'm going to get you for this!

System: Yet another struggle ensues between you and Julan, but thrice as long as the first.

MC: There! Are you ready for the ball Princess Julan?

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l12/Daedra_Lord/Morrowind2010-08-1321-05-46-52.jpg

Julan: I hate you.

Edit: I see they've disabled [/img] coding on the forums since my last visit.

LMAO! Thanks for posting! ^^

For the record, it's randomised as to whether you or Julan wins any particular battle in the Ongoing Hat War. ;)

Well thanks to Allie's help I finally completed Julan's quest.

Yet now he sighs, whistles and mutters in battle for some reason.

It was years ago and before the large forum update. I'm dead certain because this board was where I learned to even do so. (Yeah, it's THAT old. xD )

That's his usual behavior if you tell him not to interfere in battle. If you currently don't want him helping you fight, then this is just his attitude. If he is currently helping you though then I'd say try toggling his '--combat' instructions.

Need some help. at the main quest point where you talk to the ashlander informant, and not sure what else to do to further advance Julan. I've already trained him quite a bit. Where am I supposed to go next?

If you're being blocked then your training hasn't been enough just yet. It's actually measured by how many skill points he's learned rather then number of training sessions. Training him in his own major and minor skills will advance him by 3 or 2 points respectively each session, whereas training him in a misc skill will only grant him a single point. Thus, focusing on his specalizations will speed up the pace to advance the next stage of his questline. If he's too skilled in those areas for you to teach him, pay somebody to do so instead and make him read alot of books. The grand total you're aiming for is 30.
Spoiler
There is a conversation he has with you when you're halfway there asking about how you came to Morrowind. If you haven't received even that yet, you have your work cut out.
Good luck.

It's also mentioned in the http://princess.elricm.net/JulanFAQHZ.html Under 'Hassour Zainsurbani'.

I love this mod and use it whenever I plan on doing the main quest because it complements it so well and adds much needed character to the whole deal. It's really awesome how Julan has comments for many different quests that you do or areas that you visit so he is more than a follower or a fight bot. Thanks for this mod, best one yet.

Now I need to find more like this :celebration:

Make sure you rest for a while (not wait), then he should sober up if everything is working.

Sleeping should work. If it doesn't (and I've had a few reports of this within the last year, maybe a conflict with a mod I don't know about?) you can open the console, click Julan, and type: set alcohol to -1

Regarding the non-following, this can happen if you teleport when he's not expecting it (in battle, halfway through spellcasting, etc).

Try (save your game first) opening the console, clicking him, type:

startcombat player

Close the console, and see if it worked. If he actually attacks you (he shouldn't normally) do the console again, but type: stopcombat

You can try it more than once, if it doesn't help the first time.

I've been playing with Julan in the game for probably 30-40 hours. I'm really impressed.
He's a great companion and a keeper. Really adds a lot to the experience.
He's even been well behaved during various kinds of transporting.
I've lost track of him a couple times but always been able to recover him fairly easily.

A really nice mod to have.

A couple twitches.
You really have to keep an eye on him inside Telvanni towers and places that have a lot of twisty tight passages. He can get confused.
His inventory repair could be easier.
Not gripes. Just things I'd like to see changed.

Also is there a definitive list of things he can and can't do? My questions haven't been answered in any info/readme I've yet seen.
I'm seeing that he won't use enchanted items except for weapons with cast-on-strike capabilities. Yes?
And the only potions he'll use are health and magicka replenish?
What exactly are the things he's capable of?
I've only had him die twice in all his game time. But I keep a pretty close eye on him.

Thank you for such a great addition to a great game Kateri. Really.

Thanks, I'm glad you like the mod! :)

Thanks, too, for the feedback! I'd love to make him repair his own gear without you having to take it off him, but I can't see how it'd be possible due to scripting limitations. For following, he uses Grumpy's classic scripts. There might be ways to improve them these days, but I'd have to investigate.

What he can and can't do depends a lot of Morrowind's inherent NPC AI, which can be a bit unpredictable, and we don't even know the full extend of it. For example, NPCs will take health potions, including player-created ones, but not sensibly - they might take them ALL the moment their health drops. Julan has scripts by DinkumThinkum that regulate his use of health potions, so he uses them sensibly, but the scripts can't detect player made potions, so if you give those to him, he will use them, but he might use several at once, so I wouldn't give him too many. He's also scripted to use magicka potions when he needs them.

NPCs will use other kinds of potions, but it's kinda unpredictable, and sometimes hard to say what triggers them to drink a particular potion. For instance, I have seen companions drink potions of levitation when fighting a flying monster. They will also sometimes drink potions of fortification, INCLUDING booze, even if it has bad effects too. Just ask Julan how close I came to killing him, after we trekked all across Molag Amur to deliver a load of sujamma to the Fighter's Guild, only for me to find he had somehow drunk all ten bottles by the time we got there.

NPCs will *sometimes* use enchanted items, like rings of fireball and such, but not reliably, and I don't think they ever use scrolls. I could be wrong but I've never seen it.

Not sure what else you wanna know, but ask and I can try to answer!

The Morrowind Code Patch has a little fix for this, allowing NPCs to drink only 1 potion every 6 seconds.

OK.
Thanks for the answers. I guess he still has some mysteries for everyone. :)
I'll just equip him with various doo-dads and see what he does. I'll leave it to him.

Another question. Does leveling up his minor skills like sneak, mysticism or alchemy do anything worthwhile?
Or should I just stay with the basics like armor and weapons?

Fantastic stuff here. << from one who remembers playing Pong when it was a brand new thing, hehe.

Thanks again!

ETA: I've got MCP installed and he does seem well behaved as far as potion taking goes.

ETA again: Just wanted to add a little thing that happened.
Was in a Dwemer ruin with vampires attacking. Got them all (I thought).
All of a sudden I'm registering damage...getting hits from somewhere I can't tell.
Julan's kickin' butt with his Dwarven crossbow and I look where he's shooting and it's a vamp with a close to 100% chameleon spell using a crossbow..
Wow.
Saved my bacon.
VERY cool.

Okay, the skills system:

Julan has nearly the same skills you do, in terms of levelling them up, but he lacks Marksman, Acrobatics and Athletics. This is because they are set to certain levels by his scripts - e.g. acrobatics needs to remain high to save him from dying if the player leads him off a cliff, and his Marksman level tells him whether to use ranged or melee weapons.

All his other skills are trainable, and are all linked to a statistic, e.g. Destruction is linked to Willpower, the same as it is for the player. However, not all his skills are linked to the same attribute as the player, since I left out Speed, since that's preset by his script, so he can follow you properly. Therefore, I had to assign all the skills that normally use Speed to other stats, and I changed a couple of others too, to balance things out a little. I can post a list, if anyone cares, but it's pretty logical.

After you raise his skills, the next time you rest, his stats, max Health and Magicka will be recalculated from his skills. You don't need to max out every single one of his skills to max out his stats, but obviously you'd need to train him a lot. His skills and stats are all capped at 100, they won't go higher. (unless fortified, but that's another matter, and BTW, don't give constant effect items to companions, the Morrowind engine screws them up for some weird reason, and they might start working in reverse!!)

So: why would you want to bother raising stats like Mercantile, or Alchemy? Well, because their level contributes to a stat: e.g. Alchemy raises Intelligence, which directly controls his max Magicka (3xINT). His Sneak skill contributes to Agility, and also, well, affects how good he is at sneaking! The Personality-linked skills are certainly the least crucial (Speechcraft, Mercantile, Illusion) but if you have him use a lot of Illusion magic, you might boost it, as a high Personality will make them more effective. But it's up to you - I never intended Julan to be wildly charismatic, so a high Personality isn't really in character anyway!

He has major and minor skills, these will get more points from training, so are easier to raise. Did you notice you could lend him skillbooks, too, if you find them? (topic: "good books", which you can get in bookshops, if you haven't already) He won't read everything, as he won't read skillbooks for skills he can't raise (Athletics, Marksman, Acrobatics), he has a personal aversion to Vivec's Lessons, and you need to give him the first volume of a series before he'll be interested in the second. But most others will work, and you get a mini-reward for getting all the volumes of long series for him. The snarky book reviews are free!

Something I thought of recently is the idea of adding "teachable moments", i.e plot/event related skillraises for him. Like, he gains points in alchemy for helping you with Ajira's quests. Or losses even - a random loss of a few points of something Intelligence related if he gets himself drunk a lot. Suggestions welcome!

I should really put all this in the FAQ, I don't think I ever explained it fully before!

Thank you so much for that explanation Kateri. It really helps a lot.
Kinda' allows me to quit worrying about details and just PLAY. :P
Yup. He reads... Good to know about the order of multi-volume sets. Some amazing intracacies involved... Stuff like that I would never pick up on in 100 years of gaming.
If you were of a mind, this is the kind of info that would make a detailed FAQ very nice.
Would make it feel like you weren't missing out on something important.

I've had some INTENSE gaming lately.
Julan is totally P.O.'d at me!

My deepest thanks and appreciation to you for such a wonderful companion.

Just a quick question. Can I use Julan and Constance without any problems?
I have Julan installed and I just got him, and he's pretty cool so far, but I heard Constance was really good too. So can I use both at once? Or is that generally a bad idea?

That's awesome. The last time I played Morrowind for more than a couple hours was back in 2002. These mods and companions make the game way more interesting. Great job Kateri.
Oh one more question. If I install Constance now, do I have to check my load order? I remember seeing something about how if Julan's load order gets moved he gets messed up or something.
