[RELZ] Julan, Ashlander Companion [No.14]

Think I'll probably go for it :) any other story enhancing mods worth getting? (graphics mods I'm good for, having hand picked the mods I wanted/liked over the course of around a month)

I'd like to add emphasis to the Role Playing part of the genre :D

@Deadra_Lord Ahahaha, oh stoppit, you're making me want to go and write Bloodmoon quest dialogue for the mod now! I can't stop giggling at Shani getting off on having healing spells cast on her. That is very her - might have to steal it! ^^,

I can't quite recall that far back, but I think I was in the same pickle when I first installed the mod.

My advice: Your current character isn't going anywhere if you leave him alone for awhile, he'll still be there if you find your progress on various tasks to be more worthwhile. But let me tell you, once you start delving into the deeper parts of Julan's quest-line, you'll probably never want to go back to your old character ever again. :P

Edit: Whoops. Forgot why I sopped by the thread to begin with: Story time!

HA! Han-Julan and I Bohemia just did that quest this afternoon... thanks for reminding me why I never let Shani go anywhere with them (aside from the fact that she keeps trying to kill Bohemia...)

Bear-time was pretty uneventful, but then this happened:

That, and he never stops glaring at her. It's really creepy.

Anyway I was just really excited to make my first screenshots since getting MGE to finally work.

Kateri, just wanted to say hi, and thank you for such a http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l584/Rivendell139/FollowingJulantoDagothUr.jpg and entertaining mod. http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l584/Rivendell139/HanJulan.jpg is amazing. When I first got him drunk, and was going through all his discussion subjects... well, lets just say it's the funniest thing I've ever seen in an Elder Scrolls game. The only problems I ran into while playing him were of my own creation, like when I wouldn't wait for him to stop moving before going through a door. I've only dabbled in modding, but I understand enough to see how much work must have gone into creating him. Julan is a work of art.

That one's just begging out for the caption, "He's right behind me, isn't he."

@ Rivendell - Julan when he's drunk really is hysterical. A friend of mine started using the mod based entirely on a story I told her once about Julan getting drunk: he started rambling on about finding an Ordinator and putting his helmet on backwards--when we were in Suran. Then the next morning he came back with a wicked hangover...and a lady's skirt.

Bohemia (my character) is semi-convinced that someday she'll turn around and find Julan cackling maniacally, and holding Shani's severed head... and Necro-Shani will still be giving her that Village of the Damned look.

Jasmine isn't apart of the mod. I think she was inspired by him though.

Inspired by: yes. A part of: no. And for the record, I've never had anybody attribute my work to another. Though in this particular instance, I don't see it as an insult. :D

Not to get anyone's hopes up or anything, since my life can be very up-and-down, so no promises or release dates, but: I spent all of today in the CS with something I'm labelling Julan v.2.0. I made a lot of script changes, so you won't be able to upgrade your save, you'll need to start a new character. I wasn't going to say anything until I had something concrete to let people test, BUT on the other hand, I want people to tell me what they would like to see added/changed, and there are issues I am interested in getting feedback on, as I can't decide what to do yet.

Already in the works:
- expanded Shani dialogue, including various embarrassing stories from when she and Julan were younger. Some are silly, some are sad. (Optional, as not everyone likes to click through screens of dialogue of long stories!)
- making Julan's conjuration skill useful rather than annoying (summoning things on request, not when fighting rats, fixing it so Julan won't attack you if you kill his summons)
- more Tribunal/Bloodmoon dialogues
- general upgrading of follow scripts (would love tips on this. Melian isn't around, is she?)
- some kind of (immersive) ingame hints for parts people get stuck on. I'm considering including ingame tech help, e.g. console commands in a book, but it feels too immersion-breaking to me. Thoughts?
- extra conversations at intervals about various random things I think it'd be fun to write. This may include an "ask Julan/Shani a random question" option, in which case, if you have suggestions of things you think the PC should be able to ask, PLEASE POST 'EM!
- maybe some extra quests/stories I have ideas for.
- a million tiny tweaks/additions probably only I will ever notice!!

If you have strong opinions about what I should do, speak now!

Personally I'd love more misc quest integration.
Perhaps the Great House quests?

The Tribunal Temple quests would no doubt be hilarious with Julan around, as would the Imperial Legion and Imperial Cult quests. :)

OMIGAWD OMIGAWD OMIGAWD!!!!!!11 Be still my beating heart!

Kateri, Julan is so very nearly perfect that I hesitate to ask for anything other than "more of same", but I actually do have a tiny request/suggestion:

Spoiler
I would love to have an option, similar to the Shani cat fight, that would allow the player to actually engage Julan in a argument or berating type exchange... I already have them in my head, of course (and sometimes out loud, to be honest) but since he just stands there making big red puppy-dog eyes, it's less than satisfying. (That makes me sound like a monster, doesn't it? Ahem... I only yell at Julan for his own good. Or because he's an idiot... Yeah, I'm a monster. :( )

And, also, OMIGAWD!!!! :)

And there was me thinking I already included too many screaming arguments! :P (I kid of course, there is no such thing as too many.)

I do like to include the possibility for the player to challenge Julan on his biases, hypocrisies and random idiocies (see: The "Imperials" Conversation) but it helps to know what people want to yell at him about. So: what do you want to argue about?

I hesitate to offer suggestions as I don't use the mod very much, but I've always found the end of the 'romance quest' genuinely disturbing. I mean:
Spoiler
the guy just informs you that he's 'accidentally' married you simply by telling you to marry him, and that you have to obey his every command because he's the ashkhan, and the only possible responses are "OK" or "What about the wedding?" And he then has the nerve to act like you're the one being unreasonable if you complain? OK, so that's entirely in-character, but I think the player should at least get to call him on it.

Spoiler
Oops - it's certainly not supposed to be disturbing! There's no suggestion that you have to obey his commands (as if!) and as I recall, you CAN yell at him to undo it, which he does (it doesn't call off the romance entirely, just the married bit). Relevant journal entry:
"When I asked Julan about his earlier demand that I marry him, he suddenly became very evasive. I eventually got the truth out of him - apparently, according to Ashlander custom, we are ALREADY married!!! I insisted that he un-marry us immediately, and he took offense. I feel a bit guilty about hurting his feelings, but really, what did that idiot expect me to say?"
I'll take another look at the dialogue options again, though!
edit - yeah, you're right, it could do with a player response option with less yelling and more of a "look, I like you, but you can't be serious about this" line of argument!

Spoiler
Falco: http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l12/Daedra_Lord/MGEScreenshot47.jpg Seler Favelnim's gone crazy, he's trying to pick a fight with everybody in the bar. This isn't like him and he's spoiling the grand-opening dammit. Head on in there and see what you can do about it. I trust you of course to be civil, yes?

Player: As civil as it gets around here, boss.

Julan: Tavern... Please tell me they'll serve more then just Mead at this one.

Shani: Please tell us you're not going to climb to the top of the Mine Entrance...

[They walk to the bar]

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l12/Daedra_Lord/MGEScreenshot49.jpg

Player: You have my word, ma'm.

[They walk in]

Seler Favelnim: You! You're the one they sent to deal with me aren't you?! Come on and fight me, you're not some kind of coward, are you?

Player: You would hit a lady?

Julan: So you're... just going to stand there and get beaten up *snigger* by this old f'lah? Hahahaha...

Seler Favelnim: *punching player randomly* Die Fetcher! Die!

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l12/Daedra_Lord/MGEScreenshot88.jpg

Random Imperial Patron: And YOU'RE just standing here, LAUGHING at her?!

Julan: Yup!

Player: *Blocking punches with shield* Honestly now...

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l12/Daedra_Lord/MGEScreenshot51.jpg

Seler Favelnim: Can't... Can't keep swinging... Too tired. Just, just fight me, okay? Come on. Actually, just kill me. Tell them you had no choice but to defend yourself.

Player: You really think they'll believe that with all these witnesses?

Seler Favelnim: *Looks around at all the patrons staring at them.* [Crickets chirping]

Shani: Wait. What's a cricket? [Shut up Shani, stick to the script!]

Seler Favelnim: You're right... I'm sorry. I'll stop, and I'll try to look on the bright side from now on.

Julan: Gods, that was the funniest thing I've seen for ages. I'm a terrible person aren't I?

Random Nord Patron: Yes, yes you are.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l12/Daedra_Lord/MGEScreenshot87.jpg

Shani: YOU asked him!

Player: *Glances slowly and menacingly towards Julan, then back to Seler.* [Rips up Kateri's script] On second thought, my cherished elder... I've got a deal for you.

Seler Favelnim: Ehhhh... You have my attention, outlander.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l12/Daedra_Lord/MGEScreenshot56.jpg

Seler Favelnim: You've got a deal!

Julan: WHAT?! THAT WASN'T IN THE SCRIPT!!!

Player: Shani get the door!

Shani: Right.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l12/Daedra_Lord/MGEScreenshot59.jpg

Seler Favelnim: Hahahahaaa. I've still got it! These old bones still got it!

Shani: Hey, if I beat Julan up too, will you cast more of those healing spells on me? =D

Player: No deal. I'll buy you a drink later for your guarding the door though.

Julan: *Ducks and strafes everywhere to avoid blows. Usually stumbling into barstools and tables or falling over entirely*

[Crowd Cheering]

Julan: What is going on? They didn't cheer when he was fighting you!

Player: I didn't ask for it by being such a s'wit.

Random Imperial Patron: 25 septims on Seler!

Athellor: 100 septims on the old mer!

Random Nord Patron: 500 septims on the ancient hide!!!

Bartender: Free rounds for everyone on the old guy!

Everybody except Seler and Julan: YES!!!

Seler Favelnim: *Shoves Julan across the room*

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l12/Daedra_Lord/MGEScreenshot61.jpg

Seler Favelnim: That remark is 'gunna cost you another rib, sonny!

Julan: What is it with you old people and my ribs! Fine, I'll show you what a Velothi can do! *Charges wildly with a loud yell.*

Seler Favelnim: *Ducks behind corner*

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l12/Daedra_Lord/MGEScreenshot86.jpg

Everyone except Julan, Seler, and Shani: *grimmace* Oooooooooooooooh...

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l12/Daedra_Lord/MGEScreenshot86.jpg

Seler Favelnim: Looks like your luck has really run out, youngster! *Picks up Julan*

Julan: Oof. What are you doing? No. NO! NOOOOOO!!!

[This scene has been censored by formal decree of The East Empire Company and it's associates]

...

[So has this one.]

...

[Aaand this one.]

...

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l12/Daedra_Lord/MGEScreenshot66.jpg

Player: Shouldn't you still be guarding the door? And not be getting drunk anymore?

Shani: There ish nooooo escape! Aaaaaand Iiiiiie 'm NOT drunk. *Hiccup* Iiiii'm tipsy. Reaaaaaly REALLY tipsy. And the coin I found wash reaaaaaaaaly pwetty. *giggles*

Player: Riiiiight. And besides, I gave him a jumbo spell before I stopped. My wager is they'll both faint at about the same time.

Shani: Wonderful.

[The End]

Falco: -And the healer bill comes up to... 6,000 drakes, to be paid in full.

Player: Done.

Oh, I quite agree, but I was kinda banking on the difference being the relative consequences. That is to say, marriage in our world has serious legal ramifications, whereas the worst that can happen from ignoring Julan's totally non-officially legally sanctioned traditional belief is that a few Ashlanders might look down on you a bit. So, whether you want to accept the "marriage" is totally up to your character, as it's not going to matter much either way. Except to Julan, but really, arguments and fallings out are rather par for the course in this relationship (I never said it was a romantic fantasy! :P ).

Kateri, you really know how to cheer a girl up! This is great news

I found it difficult thinking of things you could improve (Julan is one of three mods I never, ever play without) but I managed to come up with a few.

Spoiler tag for safety, not quite sure what's common knowledge:
Spoiler

- being able to say that you know what the Nerevarine is/represents. I'm thinking in particular of the first Julan quest where it's mentioned a few times. It's a small point, but it would be nice to be able to surprise Julan by actually knowing what they are.
- I'd like to be able to introduce Julan to Caius after the whole thing with the rings. Caius keeps insisting on complete secrecy, but there's not really much point by then (and I think a conversation between the two would be hilarious).
- more dialogue for quests in general. Julan's opinion on what's going on can always be relied upon to brighten up even the dullest of quests :D The Great House quests in particular would be lovely to have comments on.
- not really a suggestion as such, since you've already said you're working on it, but I really would appreciate if you could find a way to point players towards the Mashti/Shani quests. I keep forgetting about them tbh xD
- a conversation about slavery, with options to support it or agree with Julan about it.

I think I've said this to you before, but it's worth saying again: thank you so much for creating this mod. Julan has added so much to my game over the years :)

Thanks for the suggestions! They are Duly Noted. I adore Caius, but sadly he returns to the Imperial City not long after that point in the mod. I'll think about it though - I love writing for him. I actually once wrote a scene between him and Julan (and Constance!) as part of someone else's fanfic, and it was hugely enjoyable to do!
