Julie's Exploration

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 7:00 pm

Hey guys! This is a story I've thought about for a little while, but I never bothered writing it until now. Here's the prologue. I got a basic storyline finished, and this is basically just something for you guys to check out, and see if it seems interesting. This is just the prologue. Hope you enjoy, guys and gals.

--Julie's Exploration - The Prologue--

January 5th, 2289.

"Let's go, Venustas!" said the little girl, as she skipped down the barren wasteland scene. "We've got to get back before it gets dark out." The Yao Guai looked at her, then compliantly followed her. As the sun slowly descended, they made their way to the abandoned shack that they called home. She carefully avoided the Frag Mines laid out around the shack, and lay down on the desert floor.

Looking up at the sky as the sun went down, she smiled and thought to herself, "Today was a good day." The Yao Gaui lay down beside her, and rested his head on her lap. They both fell asleep.

Early the next morning, the little girl awoke. She got up, brushed the dirt from her dress and walked towards a small crate. Inside the crate, there was a box of Sugar Bombs, some Snack Cakes and a raw piece of Molerat meat for the Yao Guai. She picked up her Pip-Boy and put it on her left wrist.

Her name was Julie Brown; she had dark brown hair, and pale skin. She wore a raddy old Pre-War dress, which she found out in the Capital Wasteland. Her only companion was her Yao Guai, Venustas. He was smaller than most Yao Guai, and quite friendly. Julie was only 9 years of age, but she knew alot about the Wasteland.

She tried waking Venustas, but he refused to wake up. She picked up the piece of Molerat meat and shook it in front of his nose, and he opened an eye. He slowly got up, yawned, and ate the piece of meat. Julie patted him on the head softly, and he made a quiet groan. They both began wandering the Wasteland.

Julie loved exploring the Capital Wasteland, and would always mark new places on her Pip-Boy. Every day, she went searching for food and new places to mark down. She would always find some interesting things while traveling. She would occasionally run into trouble out in the Wastes, however. Raiders, Mirelurks, the occasional swarm of Bloatflies, but she usually managed to roam around undetected. If she did run into trouble, Venustas was always there.

They carefully avoided the Frag Mines, and headed off into the Wasteland.

Alright... here's the first part of Chapter One. I hope you guys enjoy this. If you do, I'll gladly continue this. Also, any criticism is welcome! :)

--Julie's Exploration - Chapter One (Part 1/2)--

January 6th, 2289.

Julie briefly checked her Pip-Boy, and decided that they should start heading West. They hadn't really discovered many places to the West, so they figured it was a good idea to start heading in that direction. They walked for quite a long time, and to keep himself busy, Venustas started batting at some Bloatflies in the air. Julie watched and laughed as the giant creature played with the swarm of Bloatflies.

They eventually reached a tall hill, where they sat and rested for a few minutes. Julie looked around to see if there was anything interesting nearby, but there didn't appear to be anything except small bushes and dead trees. The sound of the wind broke the long silence.

"We have to keep moving, Venustas," she said to the bear. "There must be something close!"

It was now noon, and having not eaten that morning, Julie decided to start snacking on the box of Sugar Bombs. She handed Venustas a snack cake, and they continued walking. After about thirty minutes, Julie saw a small group of people out in the distance. It didn't look like the people had seen them, so they stood still and watched them go by.

"It's Raiders!" she exclaimed. The Yao Gaui growled at the passers-by, and Julie signaled him to be quiet. The people were wearing spiked armour, and had strange helmets; they must have been Raiders.

Raiders were always trouble. Raiders were the reason Julie's parents and everybody she ever knew were dead. The two stayed back, watching as the group passed by. There were four of them.

All of a sudden, there was a faint sound. It sounded almost like a gunshot. One of the Raiders dropped to the ground, into a pool of it's own blood. The others looked around, startled. They had guns.

Another gunshot, and a Raider clenched his arm and dropped to the ground. The other Raiders looked around, unaware that a small party of Talon Company Mercenaries were about to ambush them. Three Mercenaries jumped out from behind a rock and started firing Laser Pistols and Assault Rifles at the Raiders, killing another Raider.

The last Raider threw a grenade at the Talon Company Mercs, but before the grenade exploded, one of the Mercs managed to kill the remaining Raider. The frag grenade then exploded, killing all three Mercenaries, and ripping their limbs off in a giant bloody mess.

Then, it was silent.

Julie and Venustas walked over to the bodies, and searched them for food and maybe some medical supplies. One of the Raiders had a box of Snack Cakes, but a bullet had pierced the box. They also had a bottle of Vodka, and one of the Mercenaries was carrying a Stimpak.

Fights like these were common out in the Capital Wasteland, and Julie and Venustas were surely used to it. What other people dropped, Julie and her Yao Gaui gained.

The two continued walking.

Alright, I'm gonna keep this going for those who seem interested. Here's the second part of Chapter One.

--Julie's Exploration - Chapter One (Part 2/2)--

January 6th, 2289.

It was close to 3:00pm. Julie was hoping to find a Wastelander to buy the bottle of Vodka off of her, because she was tired of holding it in her hand. What was a nine-year-old little girl going to do with a bottle of Vodka? As luck would have it, they ran into a Brotherhood Of Steel patrol.

Julie often ran into the BoS when she was wandering the Capital Wasteland. They were kind to her, and often purchased items from her on her travel for a small amount of caps and sometimes food. Julie knew who the people in this patrol were. Paladin Hammett and Knight Sinclair.

Hammett was tall, and had tan skin. He carried around a modified Assault Rifle and a Scoped .44 Magnum sidearm. Hammett was very intelligent; he carried a copy of 'Nikola Tesla And You' around with him. He would rather negotiate with his enemies than fire a gun at them, but often times he never could negotiate.

Sinclair was different. Hardened by the Wasteland, he knew he couldn't care about anyone or anything, because it was often taken away from him. He was a short, angry person with pale skin, but he was nice to Julie, even if he was just pretending. He often carried a Minigun or a Flamer, depending on his mood.

"Good afternoon, Julie!" Hammett said to her.
"Hi, mister!" she replied.
"Got anything for us today?" he asked.
"I found a bottle of Vodka on some Raiders before, if you want to trade for it."
"That sounds excellent! How about five caps?" he offered.
"Do you have any food?" she asked. Sinclair checked his backpack, then pulled out a cup of Noodles and some Purified Water.
"How's this?" Sinclair handed her the supplies.
"Thank you, mister!" she smiled at the two men, then exchanged the bottle of Vodka for the Noodles and water.

"Hey there, Venustas!" Hammett started petting the Yao Guai, and he seemed to enjoy it. Hammett and Sinclair didn't like that Julie wandered the Wasteland alone, and they would often accompany her to her destination, wherever it was. She never really knew where she wanted to go, but she knew she wanted to go there.

After a few hours of talking with the two men, Julie and Venustas then realized it was almost 6:00pm, and the sun was starting to go down.

"You guys won't make it back before nightfall. We'll escort you back. Now what direction is your home?" Hammett asked. Julie told them where the shack was, and they headed home.

A couple hours later, their shack was in view. Julie thanked the two men for escorting them home, but before they departed, Hammett gave Julie a Vault-Tec Lunchbox. "You'll find some useful things in there, Julie. Be careful out there, okay kiddo?" He messed up her hair, smiled, and the two men walked away.

Julie lay down on the desert floor, and Venustas lay down beside her, resting his head on her lap. Julie smiled, and placed the Lunchbox beside her. She decided that she'd open it tomorrow.

Looking up at the now night sky, she thought to herself, "Today was another great day."

Julie and her Yao Guai then fell asleep.

This story is quite well written and a 10 on the purely-great scale. Although, if the LW is evil in the story and you choose to implment him/her, how would they treat poor Julie? Also; she should totally live in Little Lamplight, I'd like to see Venustas eat Mayor Macreedy alive.

Haha. :P

I thought of sticking Julie in Little Lamplight, and I actually did ponder the thought of Venustas tearing Macreedy apart. :P (Sick minded? Yes, thank you.)

Just as it's impossible to hurt him in the game, it's impossible for him to be hurt here.

Child killing is against the rules and yes 'hurting him isn't killing him' but it's just common sense to know that they when they say killing it also means hurting. Just a heads up.

Please keep in mind that this is based 12 years after the events of FO3. Macreedy is now a full-grown advlt. I doubt I'll even incorporate him into the story, but thanks for telling me this. I'll keep it mind.

In your second post when you wrote about her looting the raiders. I just got an image of a girl skipping around dead bodies humming and searching their pockets, the one shot in the arm wounded and dieing slowly. And then she just hops over to a mess of limbs and gore to look for more things.

This is quite possibly the most awesome fallout-esque scene i've ever had in my mind.

@ Doominurpants: I was actually going for that. :P

And here is Chapter Two! I know I've released these fairly quickly, but I've had the prologue and first two chapters written (and edited) for quite some time. Anyways... Here it is!

--Julie's Exploration - Chapter Two--

January 7th, 2289.

Julie awoke early the next morning in excitement. It was still dark out, and she could barely see anything. She turned on her Pip-Boy light and grabbed the lunchbox. She unlocked the clips on the side of it, and opened it up.

Inside, there were three Stimpaks, some RadAway, and a copy of 'Grognak the Barbarian'; her favourite comic. She was thrilled, and didn't know how she could thank the two Brotherhood of Steel men.

Julie picked up the copy of 'Grognak the Barbarian', and began reading it until the sun rose. Her mother had taught her to read when she was younger. Julie checked her Pip-Boy after reading the first half of 'Grognak the Barbarian', and it was 6:30am; time to get moving. Julie shook Venustas to wake him up, and he reluctantly rose and made a large yawn.

Julie finished the box of Sugar Bombs, and gave Venustas a couple Snack Cakes. "It's okay, Venustas. We'll go out and get some food for you today," she explained. The Yao Guai swallowed the Snack Cakes, and the two of them set off on their next journey.

They carefully stepped around the Frag Mines, and started heading West again.

They walked for what seemed to be days, but was really just a few hours. Venustas killed a couple Mole Rats and ate their meat during the trip, and Julie found a dead Raider that had a Nuka-Cola on him, which she took.

The day was turning out pretty boring, until they ran into some Raiders.

They looked dirty, like they'd been rolling around in dirt for a few hours. There were three of them, and they looked intimidating. One of them was missing an arm, and their clothing had blood stains. Julie and Venustas tried to avoid them, but they spotted them and ran over.

"Look what we have here, boys!" said the leader, who was a female. She had spiked red hair, and looked like she wasn't too friendly. The other Raiders snickered as she spoke to them. Venustas started growling and was getting into attack mode, but Julie told him not to.

"You tamed this Yao Guai, kid?" said the leader.
"No, he's just friendly." Julie replied. The Raiders all laughed, and got their guns out.
"He's ours now, punk. Now get lost before you get hurt."
"You can't take him!" she objected. "He's my friend, and you can't have him!"
"Didn't you hear me, kid? How about we kill both of you? Does that sound better?" the leader replied. She loaded her Assault Rifle, and pointed it at Venustas. Julie started crying. "Hey look, guys... the little girl is crying!" The Raiders all laughed.

As they were occupying themselves, Venustas stood up, made a loud roar, and swiped his giant claws at the Raiders, immediately knocking all three of them on their backsides. They scrambled to get their guns, but Venustas had already started ripping off their body parts, one by one.

All of the Raiders were dead, and Venustas was covered in their blood. He began making a snack out of their dead bodies. Julie was shaking in fear, and collapsed to the floor. She was unconscious. Venustas sniffed her, picked her up by her dress with his mouth, and carefully placed her on his back. He then walked home.

Venustas reached the shack right as the sun hit the horizon. He placed Julie on the ground, and lay down beside her, resting his head on her lap. He fell asleep.

This Chapter is pretty long. It's going to be in two parts because I didn't want one MEGA post on here. Plus, I'm going out and won't be able to finish Chapter Three until later. Enjoy, guys and gals! :)

--Julie's Exploration - Chapter Three (Part 1/2)--

Four years earlier...

Julie screamed as Raiders destroyed the newly built homes in Megaton. She watched in horror as they burned buildings to the ground, along with people. It was utter chaos; she didn't know what to do. "Mommy!" she screamed. Over and over again, she called for her mother to save her. Raiders busted in through the front door of her house, which was now burning, and started firing their guns randomly into the air. Luckily, Julie wasn't hit.

She ran up the stairs while screaming for help.... the Raiders were trailing close behind. She didn't know what she could do; hiding was the only way to avoid a certain death. She turned into her bedroom, grabbed her Teddy Bear, and hid under her bed. She cried silently and held her Teddy Bear as the Raiders quickly searched the rooms.

They entered her mother's room, first. Julie heard them talking to each other; "Come out, come out, wherever you are!" She closed her eyes, and waited. She heard footsteps in her bedroom. They searched for her in the Locker and under the desk. Julie's heart stopped as they approached the bed.

"Hey, look what we've got here!" one of the Raiders said as he knelt down and looked under the bed. He began laughing, and loaded his gun. Julie was certain she would die right here.

Suddenly, there was a loud explosion downstairs. The Raider looked behind him, and signaled for the other Raider to check it out. He complied, and left the room. The Raider knelt back down and looked under the bed to see Julie grasping her bear and crying. He snickered and got ready to kill her.

"Not today, you son of a *****," said a reassuring voice from behind. Lucas Simms then stabbed the Raider in the back of the neck with a Combat Knife, while holding the other Raider in a choke hold. He then shot the remaining Raider in the skull with his .32 Pistol. "Julie, where are you?" he asked. She couldn't speak.

Simms checked under the bed and pulled Julie out from under the bed carefully. "You need to get out of here, Julie." he said. He gave her the Combat Knife and a sealed envelope with a letter in it, and told her how she could escape. She nodded, wiped the tears off her face, and started walking.

Before she left, she went into her mother's room and grabbed something off her mother's desk. She took a Vault-Tec backpack, and placed her Teddy Bear, the Combat Knife, and the object from the desk inside. She opened the front door slowly, checking for Raiders as she did. She knew that Megaton belonged to the Raiders, now.

Fire lit the night sky, and the sound of people screaming filled the air. The screams were then silenced with gunfire. She stepped over a dead Raider's body, and walked towards the Megaton gate. Before she got to the gate, however, she noticed a particular body. It was her mother.

She walked over and looked into her mother's eyes; they just stared into the sky. Her mother was laying in a puddle of blood, mouth and eyes wide open. Julie couldn't help but cry and hold her mother's dead body. She heard footsteps, and ran for the gate.

She ran as far as she could, without looking back. She ran halfway to Arefu before she finally lay down on the ground. The images of people burning, the Raider's brains being blown out, her town being destroyed, and her mother's dead body burned into her memories. She stared into the stars, not knowing what to do now. She remembered the envelope, and opened her backpack.

Before she could get to the envelope, however, she saw the object that was on her mother's desk. It was a necklace, with her mother's name carved on it. She held it tightly in her hand as she stared at her mother's name on the necklace...

'Moira Brown' was carved into it.

January 8th, 2289

Julie then awoke from the nightmare, sat up, and held onto Venustas, who was resting his head on her lap. It was only 2:00am, so she lay down and fell asleep again, hoping she wouldn't continue dreaming about that night.

I'm getting some really great comments! I didn't expect that. :P Keep in mind that constructive criticism is welcome, too. Here's Part Two of Chapter Three. I warn you, it's a long one...

--Julie's Exploration - Chapter Three (Part 2/2)--

January 8th, 2289

The only thing Julie could think about in her sleep was the Megaton Massacre, which was what Three Dog called it on Galaxy News Radio. Julie often listened to GNR because she liked listening to the music.

She popped in and out of sleeping all through the night; the images of her dead mother stayed in her thoughts. Julie had accepted the fact that there was no chance of her seeing her family or friends again, and usually wasn't upset about it anymore when she thought about it, but watching Venustas kill those Raiders made her think.

'Why did the Raiders destroy my home?' she thought to herself. 'We didn't do anything to them!' She also wondered about Lucas Simms. The sheriff never had contact with Julie after the Massacre. Julie figured he was probably dead, just like the rest of them. She was about to fall asleep again when she remembered the envelope. She remembered what was in it; a letter from Simms.

She fell asleep thinking about the letter.

Four years earlier...

Julie placed her mother's necklace in the backpack and took the envelope out. She opened it and took out the letter. Although she was only five, her mother had taught her to read quite well.

Julie,
Megaton is gone. The Raiders intend on making it their territory. Me, Stockholm and Moriarty have been receiving threatening letters from the Raiders telling us to either leave Megaton or die. We figured we could resist, but they overwhelmed us. Stockholm is dead, and Moriarty is being sold to Slavers. There's nothing we can do. I'm writing letters from the comfort of my home. If you're reading this, I used the escape hatch on my roof to reach you. Any survivors are going to meet at the entrance to Vault 101, and will wait there until they think there are no more survivors. I need you to go to Vault 101 and meet them, because I know you won't survive in the Wasteland by yourself. I know you'll make it through this and reach them... I just know it. You're a good kid, and I'm sorry about your mom. Take care,
Lucas Simms.

Julie walked to Vault 101, and found that there were a few survivors. She recognized most of the people in the group, but barely knew them.

"I don't know how you got out of there, kid, but you're with us." said one of the survivors.
"I think she's the last one! Let's move, guys!" shouted another.
"This kid is all alone?"
"Yeah, I think she's Moira's daughter."
"Poor kid..."

Julie listened to the survivors talk about where to go, and why Julie was there. They spoke for a few minutes, then decided they would head for Tenpenny Tower. Julie's mother had told her bedtime stories about Tenpenny Tower, but Julie didn't know where it was. The group of survivors began walking.

It wasn't long before Tenpenny Tower was in sight.

One of the survivors sang a popular pre-war show tune while on their journey. Although it wasn't very good singing, it kept their spirits up. They were about halfway to Tenpenny Tower when trouble hit.

A .308 Caliber round went through the singer's face, causing it to explode. Julie screamed. The Raiders from the Massacre noticed the survivors walking to Tenpenny, so they followed them. When they realized they might have escaped from Megaton, they decided to kill them. Julie and the remaining survivors ran for their lives as bullets flew past their heads.

One by one, the Raiders picked them off. Now there were only two survivors... A man named Todd, and Julie. Todd was wearing a grenade belt and had an Assault Rifle. Him and Julie hid behind a rock as the Raiders continued to get closer. Todd looked at Julie.

"You need to leave without me, kid." Blood spat from Todd's mouth as he spoke. Julie looked down, and saw that his stomach was bloody. He had been shot, but wasn't about to go down. "I'll try and stop them. You need to run for Tenpenny Tower!" Julie knew that if she stayed with the man, the Raiders would surely kill both of them. She decided to run.

Todd started throwing grenades into the crowd of Raiders behind him, and blindly firing his Assault Rifle over the rock he was hiding behind. The Raiders started shooting back, and Todd could hear the bullets pass inches away from his head. He emptied a clip onto the Raiders, and was shot in the arm in the process. He collapsed to the ground and reloaded his weapon.

Realizing he had more grenades, he started chucking them over his head towards the Raiders. He could hear the explosions and outbursts of swearwords coming from the Raiders. He finished reloading, jumped up, and fired at the crowd. "Run, kid! Run as fast as you can!" he yelled as Julie sprinted to reach Tenpenny Tower.

More Raiders arrived, and easily took Todd down. He lay on the floor, bleeding slowly, but he wasn't dead yet. He took his last Frag Grenade, pulled the pin, and held it in his hand. He waited for the Raiders to get close. At the very last second, he threw the grenade, and while his arm was up for that brief second, the Raiders blew it off with their guns right before exploding into mist. He yelled in agony.

When the remaining few Raiders got to him, he still wasn't dead. He spat his blood-filled spit at the Raider towering over him. The Raider then pulled out a Hunting Rifle, and blew his head off.

Julie then awoke from her slumber.

One question:

Since this is four years after the story of fallout 3, has the water of the land been purified? Is there plant life again?

One more question: And if you include broken steel, are their almost no remnants of the enclave left?
