Jump when releasing the button?

Post » Thu Dec 16, 2010 6:20 pm

this might have been suggested before but I don't know.

Usually in TES game you jump as soon as you press down the jump button. What if we change it to jump upon releasing the jump button? I think it better simulates how we jump in real life, because when we jump we have to first bend our legs, and more we bend them higher we jump. so in skyrim we can time the button press, and longer we hold the button, higher we can jump (of course it's limited by your acrobatic skill). This way we have a little more control of how high we want to jump, instead of while in a low roof house we jump up and bang our head on the ceiling every time!

does anyone know if any other games out there are using this jump system?

Why not.

I can't believe the devs never thought about this idea. can you? there must be a reason they didn't implement it.

I like this idea sort of not doing the full jump all the time, but "charging" doesn't exist realistically. You bend your legs and jump in the span of maybe a second.

I know lol we are not talking about charging for a full second here. just slight variation and Im sure the players will learn to adapt.

That's a cool idea but sadly I don't think it will ever be implemented just because it's just not that important for them to reprogram the controls in that aspect.

Also just FYI, Acrobatics are out in Skyrim. No more jumping twenty feet in the air

Maybe instead of charging, tap the button for a little hop and hold it for a longer leap? I like the idea of not jumping as high as I can every time I jump, and being able to control it.

That may work for a broad jump. What about a running jump?

If that's the case then I guess my fears have been allayed. Godly jumping annoyed me quite a bit in the previous games.

No, your running for your life from a beast, you have to jump on the ledge to get away(pause while I charge), the beast gets you because of a poor control scheme, no thanks.

Only if it was interesting and allowed me to do things like slide or slide kick people while I was holding down the jump button.

I like pressing the jump button and jumping, unless there is a double jump, then I don't want to play that game anymore.

yea I thought about that too, but there's a problem:

when you jump just a little bit up, your speed of movement is much slower than when you are trying to jump, say, twice as high. it's just plain old fashion newtonian physics. so if you have to hold the button to indicate a high/long jump, the animiation system doesnt have the timely clue to set the correct speed for your movement, and as a result the animation will look weird to the player.

Very good idea, can't see anything wrong with it. :foodndrink:

A couple of possible ideas/additions: As you hold the button down you lose fatigue. For more hight don't move, for more length do.

EDIT: Other people posted while I was posting oops, there are some things wrong with it, but I still think they can be worked around somehow.

OK am I the only weird one who doesn't have to bend his legs in order to jump? I mean yea it helps and will get you higher.. but its not necessary.

you have to bend something in order to jump. if you are jumping without bending your legs, you are bending the joint between your legs and your feet. if you don't move any joints then you can't jump.

Obviously you have to move something. You have to push the earth at some point. But with those muscles you don't take you down and then up. The jump goes straight up. That's what I mean.

I'd love this implemented, not only because its realistic but also because it looks rediculous with maxed acrobatics when you try to jump up onto a curb.

If you tap it you'll jump a foot or do a hop while running, if you hold it down you will jump long distances like a distance jumper when you release... it just makes me feel stupid when my thief jumps up a curb, by hopping 6 to 8 feet into the air.

It all has to do with what feels good in the player's hands. Imagine playing a Mario game, but with a charged jump button.

That's not a jump, it's a hop. You're pushing off and landing on the balls of your feet, right?

I really don't have to watch a video about it. I'm pretty sure how it can be done without going down first.

Have it like it was in Oblivion where you pressed a button you jumped a certain height.
