jumping (with poll)

Post » Mon Jan 10, 2011 9:28 am

i really dont miss the way you jump in oblivion or morrowind. i hope that this time around its more heavy feeling and you cant jump 5 feet in the air. i dont want to feel weightless nor do i want to feel like a frog. i want a good heavy jump without the anti physics in mid air where u can change ur direction after ur feet leave the ground. agreed?

someone suggested a poll for this topic i posted earlier so im redoing it.

EDIT: also what about a realistic jump but when objects like a fence are just a little too high a auto animation kicks in for you to climb over it. they are working on more animation anywho

I agree with realistic jumping. Still, at acrobatics 100, you should still be able to jump quite high.

It seems to me like trying to make the jumping in the game more realistic would greatly diminish the usefulness of jumping, not to mention render the acrobatics skill entirely pointless (If it still exists at all, whether as a seperate skill, or is combined with another skill.) What's the point in improving you're ability to jump if you're not going to be able to jump high enough to make a difference anyway? You probably don't need to jump that often in real life, under normal circumstances, because it won't usually get you anywhere that you can't reach by other means, if you can't walk there, you'd probably be better served by climbing up there, which is another reason why reducing jumping height would be a bad idea, unless Bethesda has included climbing of some form, even if it's just the limited climbing over objects or onto ledges that many games have, which I guess could have happened, but I doubt it. In past Elder Scrolls games, you'd often find places that can only be reached by jumping which, realistically, you could climb onto in real life. If you reduce the height of jumping, you're basically turning barriers that you should be able to get over in the game into insurmountable waist high fences, and it's annoying to see unnecessary use of barriers you should be able to pass, even more so in an open world game, and it certainly isn't realistic.

So no, keep the jump height the same as past games, though it does need better animations. Beyond that though, the Elder Scrolls is a video game, not a simulator, anything that isn't entertaining has no place in the game, and I fail to see how making jumping basically worth it would make the game more entertaining.

Or, if Bethesda MUST do realistic jumping, than bring back the jump spell from Morrowind, so there is at least some way to make jumping useful.

Realistic for me. Maybe bring back/invent new spells or enchantments which will make you jump ridiculously high (and if that happens, chuck in some high up nooks and crannies to make jumping high worthwhile :) ).

If they combine Acrobatics with Athleticism, then more realistic jumping would be fine from that perspective; increasing a single skill gives you a bonus to speed/distance, as well as a reduction in stamina costs for performing the action.

However, unless they roll climbing and mantling into that skill, the extra jump height is needed to make sure we can get over a 3' wall.

acrobatics is more than just jumping though, theres other stuff into it.
i think bethesda is looking more into staying in combat and how u would use acrobatics then. you dont really jump when u fight, but you do dive and roll.

Agreed, better animations are really what's necessary. More leg and arm movement rather than the leg tuck and float 10 feet.

I wouldn't mind something where you hold the jump key to "charge" a jump as you are running. You would then release the key and tap it once to execute the jump. The entire process would be animated to show your character building up their speed, and would give jumping a little more tactile feel. And most importantly, would not require the loss of the skill. High levels would allow for longer leaps with a shorter charge.

All I hope is that there will be a Jumping Animation..
All you did in Oblivion was stay still in mid-air, unless you wanted to move but your characters pose would still be the same.

I enjoyed the oblivion way to jump. being able to float around my enemies unloading my bow was fun realism would be no fun in the world of oblivion.

Absolutely no for the 3rd option. Contextual system svcks because there will always be places the devs haven't taken into consideration

Furthermore I want to be able to make jedi-like godly characters who defy the laws of physics. At the beginning of Morrowind your jump was unbelievably awful but after levelling and some enchants you could jump on roofs and over city walls which was quite good IMO (though both the lowest jump height and running speed could be a bit higher than they were in Morrowind)

Realistic is fine as long as they implement climbing.

Jumping is so exaggerated usually because basic forms of bypassing obstacles aren't implemented, so they have to let you jump higher to avoid the 3-foot-tall impassable wall.

I'm working on a large landmass mod for Morrowind. Once, I got bored while doing in-game testing, because the path to the summit of a mountain requires a lot of walking - so I jacked up my acrobatic skill to 1024 thinking I would just jump to the top.

The island is to the north of the Sheogorad region, at about the same latitude as the Moesring glaciers. I ended up jumping over Vvardenfell, and kept going until I was about 2-3 miles south of Vivec. Took about half a day of game-time to complete the jump. It was funny watching cliff racers see me, turn, and the stop - because I had already gone past their AI distance. Fortunately, I was able to console teleport myself back - but that was an interesting jump... ;)

Realistic jumping, but only if that doesn't take away the levels of accrobatics like Oblivion had

Realistic, but with some differences between races (e.g. kahjits should jump higher)

Eh.. I would prefer to be able to jump higher than Oblivion. Could be that I was using the OOO mod, but the jumps felt lame to me.

Although a decent climbing or "grappling hook" option would be even better.

I want Morrowind/Oblivion style jumping. I know it's not realistic, but I'm playing a fantasy game. What's more, I'm playing a sandbox game. One of my main theories concerning massive sandbox games is that transportation should be fun, fast, and easy. Take Just Cause 2 as an example (if you haven't played it, go look at some videos). Being able to leap hundreds of feet accomplished making getting from place to place fun for me. Making a game realistic does not always mean making a game fun.

I liked a suggestion thread awhile back that explained how we should hold the jump button and release to do higher jumps which in turn use up stanima the long the jump is. Anyone play Super Meat Boy? A good jumping system(maybe not the best way to compare a RPG to a platform jumper). He said you should hold the button and the character kinda stays where he is to perform a much higher/longer strenous jump.

If you were to just tap it it would perform a small hop or jump(climb) over a small obstacle.

Also NPCs that can jump. (and sneak)

I think it should be realistic. The normal level of Acrobatics in Oblivion is 5-35 for a skill, depending on your race. If 100 is the physical peak any person can naturally achieve, than that should be the max you can achieve naturally. The world record for the Standing High Jump is 1.90 Meters, just under 6.25 feet. Idk about you guys but that is pretty damn high to me. Close to 7 feet should be the maximum at level 100. However, if you boost it magically past 100 (max in Oblivion is 255, or 2.55 times more than the human maximum), you should be able to jump 17.5 feet into the air. That is pretty high.

strongly disagree, especially with the third option. if that was the case I would not buy the game.

when I max my ability to jump, through either skills or perks, I want to be the able to jump a solid 10 feet. a master of jump should be able to reach things that others cant, and win fights by using jump to his advantage.
