Junk Fences are a PAIN

Post » Sun Nov 29, 2015 9:40 pm

Please fix the collision detection on the junk fences. Right now they are useless with all the gaps. You can't even use the small fences to fix them since the collision detection is so horrible. Why bother adding them if we can't snap them together like the other pieces or at the very least make it so they can be placed close enough together to seem more functional.

Eh i just gave up building junk fences, it's not like they add any protection anyway what with raiders spawning inside your settlements.

If using PC and have access to console commands. Try this TCL trick and you can ignore collision issues when placing items.

It is tricky to use though. I've had mix success.

Info is from another person. I reprint here with original thread link

Until we get mods to fix this poor system up, this will have to do....

How to make Junk Walls with no Gaps!
Short answer:

1. Enter console ( ~ Key)

2. Type: "TCL", then press ENTER

3. Console should read "Collision -> OFF", if it does, press ~ again, to exit Console

[[[note: this will allow your character to clip through anything in game, even the earth. Type TCL in console again to turn it off, try not to walk into the sun.]]]

4. Enter the Workshop Menu, and select a junk wall (Or anything, really)

5. Place a junk wall, now, place another junk wall as close as you want to the 1st junk wall.

[[[You'll notice that no matter how close you place the wall (or anything, really), it remains green! You can even place them directly insinde one another!]]]

***Misplace a wall? Trying to place a wall directly next to an already placed wall OUT of TCL?

[[[You'll also notice that you cannot select the wall again after it is placed while in TCL. To fix this, simply exit TCL, returning to normal collision, then enter TCL into console again. You will be able to select it now]]]

[[[You will also notice you cannot place a wall through a wall that has been previously placed while NOT in TCL. To solve this, select the wall (the one you placed normally) that can not be clipped through WHILE in TCL, then release it. This will place the wall (the one you placed normally, while not in TCL) on the hypothetical layer that exists while you place things in TCL. You will now be able to place a new wall, inside of the previously placed wall (the one you previously placed normally)... this is confusing I know, I hope it helps. It may take some playing around.]]]

Agreed, I started trying to build one around Sanctuary and just gave up in the end. Before I started I just assumed they'd snap together like the rest of the fences do. Although I think it would be better if there was a way to plot where you want the fence to be and just build it as one complete structure from the workshop menu. No idea if that would actually be doable though.

What's with all the waiting for modders to fix stuff like it's normal?

Bethesda answered to those issues yet?

You bought a car that needs a lot of repairs for a price of a new one.

I have to use a lot of dirty hacks to make anything done, snapping barely works like it is supposed to. The whole editor is like half done, but it is players job to do it now? I don't get it. I want a patch to fix this.

Well, I hate to say it, it is just how it has been with games from these folk going back to Morrowind.

Fo3 and FO NV (obsidian) both pretty much force one to console or mod use to address either outright bugs/glitches or inadequate game play/textures etc.

So players of the game like me are like a trained beaten daily monkey. We just expect the beating along with the treats. Or something like that.

So when the new trick (game) comes along, we jump up happily to learn the new trick and accept the beating. Sad huh?

It isn't all a bad thing at all really. This is one of the few game series that the developer actively supports the modding of the game via the design of the game,

and the toolset they eventually release in each case.

I can think of many other games where that is not the case.

So, far as I'm concerned , on balance. I value the fact the game can be tweaked by community over issues like what this thread was about.

I seriously doubt they will 'fix' this. It is what it is. Best I expect they will do in upcoming months is address other issues of greater importance.

Any fix they could have come up prior to release was ignored by them for reasons we will never be told about, most likely. Not by Bethesda anyway.

They are a pain but you can make it work- http://i.imgur.com/Bctamek.png

I have to tweak a couple spots when I have the time and patience but I have the entire perimeter of Red Rocket walled with junk fences and nothing can pass through them.

I'm on Xbox btw so no PC trickery.

Yes they are...

I don't use fences, I use turrets.

i just use the wood structure tile set exclusively. It uses resources wood/steel about on par the availability of them in the game word so it makes more sense anyway. Just use the shack wall for your exterior fencing.

It wasn't easy to get those on top of the billboard but it was worth it.

This - Turrets beat walls all to hell.

Raiders spawn anywhere within your base (roughly, the build area), so a large perimeter wall is a waste of both time and resources. A better defensive strategy is centrally located farms with elevated platforms above them for housing, workstations, etc, with liberal use of Turrets/Guard Posts to cover the farms/water and the entrance to your main building(s). The less stuff you have on the ground, the more field of fire your Turrets have.

Raising platforms is easy once you work out how to stack Foundation pieces (Wood Floor - Foundation) to make concrete pillars (not neccessary, but I'm a little pedantic about my buildings not floating in mid-air). Get your Foundations right, and level, you can build pretty much anything you want in the air, over as much area as you have mats for.

If you're running low on supplies for Turrets, there's a bit of a cheap 'n' nasty supply run you can do - from Sanctuary, head east, hit the Robotics Repair Depot for some oil and circuits, then Downed Flight 1981 for steel (from weapons, plus always hit 1981 on supply runs - locks, an encounter spawn location, the gunner camp on the overpass - it's just a gold mine for everything) and finally the General Atomics Galleria for more Turret-friendly mats (and, depending on your course of action upon arrival, [SPOILER]you might have a bunch of robot corpses to loot for even more, plus Cores. It's a big fight, tho - be prepared).

Not that you need many Turrets - with the set-up described above, many elevated Turrets are covering a relatively small area, and will all have converging fields of fire. Not much can survive focused-fire from 8 HMG Turrets, and that's not even counting the Guards. All you'll need to do in Raids is show up and get a good seat for the show.

Anyway, I've gone on way too long. The good news is, since walls are irrelevant anyway, go ahead and use the Junk Fences. :)

There is clearly no use for the fences, but as a Role Player, building a solid fence is a must for me. My work around for this issue is to get the junk fences as close as possible and then fill the gap with the spiked poles found under misc. menu. I put 3 spikes per gap. This fills in the hole well and makes my fence look extra crazy. That being said, I spent a LOT of resources and time building my fence, but it looks amazing.
