just bought Fallout 3

Post » Fri Apr 01, 2011 6:47 pm

Thanks guys, I found Moira Brown.. I sold and bought some stuff.. I bought mostly Stimpacks l.o.l.. I also raided the school .

Oh ok, so right now your advice is to skip the main quest and explore? I will do it.. I really want to play this game and not feel left out.. There something about this game that I just want to play.

I also got one of those Radiation suits from Moira Brown.. It seems going to MOira Brown is necessary if your a beginner.. For example, after going to her place, when ever I get knifed(at the school), my heart doesn't beat fast after 2 slashes...

What are Buffouts? are Cola's good? can I substitute a Cola as oppose to Stimpacks? it seems Cola makes my heart stops beating fast but it makes my character dizzy.. I'm not sure if it was the beer or the Cola..

Thanks guys.. Be back later..

For a small guns, sneaky character, the big (7) skills that you'll want to level up are:

Explosives
Lockpick
Medicine
Repair
Science
Small Guns
Sneak

Of those, I'd say get Small Guns, Sneak up to 50 as soon as possible along with Science and Lockpick shortly thereafter. If you get 15 points when you level up, you might put 10 of them into key skills and sprinkle the other 5 over the rest.

wow, I'm doing the "Those" quest and I keep dying as I keep getting torched by those ants.. It's frustrating.. What gun do you use to kill those ? What's frustrating is it takes forever to kill those even with a Rifle.. Boy do I svck at this game..

This game is different. It's not something you rush like Halo or COD.

I died at the Super Duper Mart.. I'm even on Very Easy.. I was able to get food though but left those Raiders.. Even if I'm using VATS, I'm able to hit 95% but it takes forever to kill those.. Also If get to shoot them on the head they still don't die l.o.l..

It's not so much a question of what type of gun but in your tactics. There's lots of places in Greyditch where you can get up high and fire away at the ants without them ever being able to come close to you. They have a hard time climbing stairs, so that gives you a bit of an advantage. Using mines while you're up high also helps alot as well. If you're forced to take them on close up though, I find a Combat Shotgun works best, and make sure to use the Fire Ant Nectar that some of them will drop. That's a pretty tough area, you need to use your head a bit there, rather than just going in with your guns blazing.

BTW, I've asked that this thread be moved to the Spoilers forum, it's starting to give too much away for General Discussions.

Wow, that was fast.

What level are you now? You might want to wait on the ants until you are a higher level. You are having the classic first playthrough. A lot of us tell the story of trying the ants too early in our first playthrough and how they kicked our butts.

Also, even though you may want to level up a few skills make sure you keep putting points into your main weapons skill. My rule with that is to try to keep my weapons skill even with my character's level (Level 7 have about 70 or so points) because if you do not do that you will have a tougher time killing things. Also, if you are using VATS make sure to take VATS perks like commando, etc. You should be able to kill ants and Raiders with a rifle with headshots pretty easily using VATS (that's a hunting rifle, yes?). Are you repairing your weapons? That is important as well as an adequate weapons skill assuming you are putting points into Small Guns.

Also, don't feel "left out" if you aren't doing quests. An enormous part of FO3 is simply exploring if you go from quest to quest to quest you will run out of them and not have much else to do but explore. It's a good idea to put a lot of exploring in between doing quests.

At low levels, the ants can be tricky, but a few pointers:

- Make sure whatever weapon you take with you is repaired up as best as possible (try Moira or the traveling traders), a weapon in poor condition does a lot less damage.

- There is one higher powered weapon in the houses in Greyditch, good for taking out ants. So make sure you look everywhere in the houses that can be visited.

- There are 2 more good weapons down in the Marigold Metro tunnels (look around in the side-rooms of the track tunnels). Both will probably provide more firepower then a .32 pistol and .32 hunting rifle.

- The ant nectar, if consumed, will give you 25% reduction in damage from fire. Personally, I prefer to keep my distance and attack from hiding so it never comes into play.

- Sneaking is best along with getting off your first shots without being detected. Ideally, you should be able to take out at least 1/2 to 2/3 of a health bar with the opening attack.

- Shoot the antennae and frenzy them so that they attack other ants (if there are multiple around), otherwise go for a sneak attack in VATS to their head

- Fight from a place of strength (high up, other side of an obstacle), and know where you can retreat to if it doesn't work (an escape route)

- In VATS, when you target a body part, the health meter of your target will blink. If the entire bar blinks, then there's a good chance that the attack will kill the enemy. If only half the bar blinks, then you'll only wound them with each VATS attack in that body part. If only a tiny part of the healthbar blinks - try a different body part or choose a different weapon.

this game is growing on me... It was frustrating at first cause I was expecting Oblivion game like play. Every day I play it I discover and learn something new.. FOr example in regards to VATS, I didn't know I could click RT 2 or 3 times and it will automatically hit or shot the enemy 2 or 3 times in a row.. .I've been doing single VATS hits l.o.l..

Yes, that will help a lot.

Re: VATS and how many shots you can cue up

Be careful about cueing up 4 or 5 shots up at the same time when you get enough AP to do so. There is no way to cancel VATS once you've committed the shots. So if a target moves behind a wall, for instance, your shots can be completely wasted and all your AP will be depleted. I think it's always best to go with the 2 or 3 at a time max and then move to the next target. You can also, in VATS, target the head, say, of one Raider guard dog, and then choose another target (while still in VATS) and cue up two more shots on the head of the Raider with him. Or whatever mix and match of shots you have the AP for and you think is best.

Hello all, I'm new to Fallout 3 but have heard good things about it.. I just bought Fallout 3 on Ebay for 10 bucks.. I'll get the expansions later on.

I'm a casual gamer and my question is this, is there a difficulty setting on Fallout 3? like Easy, Medium, Hard?

I can't wait to play it.. I've been playing Oblivion since 08.

Thanks.

M.

I do not know what platform you are playing on, but i know you will wished you bought the G.O.T.Y. edition. but still the original is just as amazing. and yes, there are 5 settings: very easy, easy, normal, hard, and very hard. i bought Fallout3 when it first came out, and like many here, i am still playing it as much as possible. i played over 1200 hours in a single playthrough, and it was hard for me to start over as i loved the character i created. i am currently on my second playthrough and am at about 380 hours in, and loving it. i would seriously advise getting at least the Broken Steel expansion pack as it allows your level cap to go from 20 to 30 with some new perks to choose from. while i am not new to fallout, i am fairly new to this forum and the people here are great, so do not hesitate to ask for help, myself included(though i play on a PS3 so i know nothing about mods) anyway, good luck. :fallout:

Thanks.. I didn't know I could cue up to target another enemy.. Thanks very much.. I had to skip the quest "THOSE" I don't know how to deal with those ants yet.. I'm doing MOira Brown's quest.. However, traveling from MEgaton to Rivet City, it takes me to the same town as those ants are following the compass.. IS there an easier way? I hope to get better at this game. I still kind of svck l.o.l. and I'm on "Very easy"

Just follow the river on that side, don't worry about the compass. If you haven't already met 3 Dog, don't go to the science lab when you get there.

a lot of us play or played oblivion, you'll get use to fallout 3 failry easy, because the game mechanics and framework are pretty much like oblivion, i got use to FO3 really easy and i played oblivion too before i bought FO3, there is an options in the game menu that you can access at any time, i usually put it on very easy the first few levels because it saves on ammo, then as i level up i put it up higher.

True that! I think we all get those 'Fallout Days' where we just get on and keep getting sidetracked by one thing after another and then 16 hours later we realises it's 2am...

But yeah, enjoy Fallout 3, OP. Try to take it slow -- get a feel for the world and the people around you.

So true! Everyone of us has those 'Fallout Days'

That's excellent advice! Hee hee! This game does make you learn to pick your battles and use obstacles to frustrate enemies, and to use cover. Laying mines in your retreat route and luring baddies into them is fun, too.

Circling a building pillar, a tree, a rock etc. while taking shots at a foe works great. Just don't use a car for that!

L.o.l.. I run around a tree to kill a mole rat l.o.l.

Wow, I just did my first quest which was Moira Brown. I feel good about that.. The game even gave me a pop up stating my skills got better or something like that.

I have a question.. I experimented with drugs like Medx, Psycho, Nuke Cola, Buffout, etc.. But it's annoying cause I don't really know what they do except my character gets dizzy and blurry(which gives me a headache as a gamer) every 10 seconds.. SHould I sell my drugs? Thanks..

If you press your F1 key there's a screen there that will show your current active effects. Just mouse over the entry for the drug you're using and it will tell you what it's doing.

That's up to you. I do myself because I don't like the idea of my character getting addicted. And in the heat of battle I tend to forget to open my inventory in order to use them. But they can come in handy in certain situations. You should at least use them sparingly though because of the addiction chance.

get a laugh out of this.. I discovered Rivet City and I found a bed in the Common Room. I'm a little stingy on my Stimpacks, so when I'm 25% healthy, I travel there and sleep there to get healthy again.

IT's the only place where I can sleep.. In Oblivion, I could do "wait" and my health bar would be full again and some beds are sleepeable. Not in Fallout so far as I only found Rivet City to do that .

I'm now Level 6.

BTW< I hate those "fire ants" they could really fire up it's amazing..

Waiting will refill your health but you have to wait much longer. I've waited for 24 hours in a row and seen my health increase from 75% to 100%.
There are many places with beds you can sleep in. Some are in safe places, some in not-so-safe places. You'll find them in your explorations ;)

Ok guys and gals, I have a situation. I was doing the "Blood Ties" quest last week when I was starting out. I got myself into the train station.. I met a guy who knows Ian West.. I don't exactly know what happened, I think I might of took some of his things(Hey, I'm new l.o.l.) and either he started shooting me and I ran away or he shot me and I killed him.. I'm not sure.. Anyway, I went back to the place at the train station to find Ian West.. I was able to open the door via password. When I got into the hall where Ian West was suppose to be at, his friends started to shoot me and I shot back(self defense) and ended up killing them.. Now I can't find Ian WEst.. I'm suppose to be a good guy but because I'm soo very brand new, my karma in this game is not good l.o.l. Help!!.

All you can do now is forget about that quest. Opening the door with the password and killing The Family fails the quest. You're not missing out on much- one of the rewards can be obtained elsewhere and the other (a perk) is not very useful, imo.

Don't worry about your karma. No matter how bad you are, you'll eventually gain lots of good karma. The game throws it at you in abundance. Play the quests the way you feel you should and if low karma is really bugging you, give one of the water beggars some purified water or donate caps to one of the churches.
