just bought Fallout 3

Post » Fri Apr 01, 2011 5:33 pm

Hello all, I'm new to Fallout 3 but have heard good things about it.. I just bought Fallout 3 on Ebay for 10 bucks.. I'll get the expansions later on.

I'm a casual gamer and my question is this, is there a difficulty setting on Fallout 3? like Easy, Medium, Hard?

I can't wait to play it.. I've been playing Oblivion since 08.

Thanks.

M.

Yes there is: the more difficult it is the less HP you have and the more your enemies have. However, in return you get more XP from killing them than at lower settings

I can't wait to play this. When I started Oblivion I was hooked. I played it every night .. There was one time I started at 8 am and ended at 2 am.. I like these kinds of game as oppose to playing like Halo or Gears because I can do anything I want.

If you enjoyed Oblivion, then you should hopefully enjoy Fallout 3 also. One thing though is how V.A.T.S. is very important for combat. If you bought the game thinking of it as a RPG games (like me and many here), then you should be satisfied hopefully. If you bought it with FPS in mind, then you probably won't enjoy it. I like both of the two (COD is overrated in my opinion), so I'm glad to see that Fallout: New Vegas will have improved real-time combat. Also, another thing some people find odd is how much damage people and creature can take. A Talon Company Mercenary can possibly take atleast ten 5.56mm rounds to the head from my Chinese Assault Rifle. That's where the skills (RPG part) can be upgraded for better accuracy and strength. For me, Fallout 3 is one of the best games I've ever played.

Fallout 3 is the only game i play anymore. Not joking. I sold my original Fallout 3 and got GoTY, and sold Borderlands, MW2, Fable 2 platinum hits, AC2, Banjo Kazooie, and all my controllers except one.

I have an Xbox360, Controller, the wire for recharging the controller, and Fallout 3 GoTY edition. Don't even go on XboxLive anymore. :fallout:

True that! I think we all get those 'Fallout Days' where we just get on and keep getting sidetracked by one thing after another and then 16 hours later we realises it's 2am...

But yeah, enjoy Fallout 3, OP. Try to take it slow -- get a feel for the world and the people around you.

It doesn't have to be. I have VATS disabled in my game and I can play it just like any FPS. You just need to use your head a bit more, don't just go into a fight blasting away. Look for decent cover, set up ambushes, be a sniper, that sort of thing.

helppp meeee.. Fallout 3 is hard for me because I just got it the other day.. I always start on Easy so I can work my way up. But even Easy was hard for me as I get getting killed by those effin Super Mutants.. I discovered "very easy" and thank God I did because I was ready to give up on it..

I do need help though.. Yesterday I landed myself at "Takoma Park" so I can get thru Museum of Technology.. My situation is I keep getting killed by this Super Mutant who has a super weapon that blows cars up.. I mean it's impossible for me to kill it .. I can't seem to kill it with a Riffle.. Am I missing something? Help me pls.. I really really want to play it but it's not fun when I keep getting nuked in da butt.

BTW, this wasteland place is Fugly. It's not Oblivion where things are pretty..

thanks for your advice on this.. I think I had the Fat Man gun and now I sold it so I can sleep with one of the hokers at Megaton.. She ripped me off. l.o.l.

BTW, what are the "drugs" for?

This game is crazy as the dialogue could be a bit hard core at times... Good writing though..

Drugs are simply used to boost your stats a bit for an hour each. Note that same drugs don't stack, so taking one Psycho has the same effects as taking fifty six Psycho. However, you can combine multiple drugs to gain their respective effects.
Drug addiction is nothing serious in this game and the whole concept is made rather invisible, most likely to avoid getting this game banned for "promoting" drug use (it was almost banned in Australia for having the drug Morphine in it - later renamed Med-X).
You will most likely be using two drugs the most in this game: Stimpaks and Rad-Away. The former is a primary method of quick healing, while the latter removes your radiation. Effects depend on your Medicine skill.

The quality of writing varies a lot in this game. Most commonly it's adequate and you will face situations when you can only, for example, offend someone although in many different ways. However, the most important characters in the game have rather extensive and generally well-thought dialogues, so don't be frustrated when that one generic NPC keeps repeating same lines.

This game does include a whole lot of swearing but thankfully only a few NPCs swear a lot and those because it's part of their ego. A good example of such is the ex-Raider Jericho which you might have met in Megaton.

And last, a general tip: Don't rush the main quest. Take your time and loot everything you consider valuable. Also, remember to repair your weapons and armor.

And explore, explore, explore! There may not be as many dungeons as there are in Oblivion, but there's lots to see.

Best advice ever. It sounds like you (the OP) may be trying to play this game more like simply an open world fps. You'll get worked by enemies over and over again like that (I know from experience :D ). Oblivion is far more forgiving of run and gun (or hack and slash, if you will) style play in many cases, so if you're coming straight from that game (as I did) Fallout 3 can be very intimidating and frustrating. You REALLY need to take this game slowly and build up your stats, gear and weapons. Don't feel the need to complete a quest right away just because it's become availabel either. Just because it's available doesn't mean you're necessarily up to it. If a new quest comes up or you just want to explore a new area but you keep getting your rear end handed to you by enemies, temporarily abandon the quest, give up exploring the area, and go back to building yourself up, then go back to the quest/area later. The upside of this is that your patience will be well rewarded in this game and the sense of satisfaction you get when you do finally beat previously unbeatable foes is awesome. :gun: B)

Welcome mpresev.I also loved Oblivion. From there I went to Dragon Age,also awesome, and now my son got me this for my birthday.I've only been playing for 3 weeks and I seem to be in a constant state of confusion which is why I spend so much time in the forums and online.Don't be afraid to ask questions no matter how stupid you think they are. It's better than going in circles for hours when you get stuck(trust me on that). These guys are very helpful and friendly.Enjoy!

Thanks man.. You know when we level up it takes us to that page where we see Medicine, Science, etc and it has numbers? I don't even know what settings I'm suppose to put.. I don't quite get how the stats work yet.. I don't even know how to build my stats. l.o.l. This game is intimidating to me for now.. I did understand how Oblivion works though after playing it a few weeks later though.. Even at that game I was able to do 4 quests from the very beginning(Side quests and Main quests)..

Right now, I'm at Takoma park, I have a lot of Rifle's, Hunting Rifles, Frag granades, .32, etc.. Unfortunately I ran out of ammo's for the Riffle's from killing those mutants..

Do I sell the rifles without the ammo's so I could get money? I need caps.. Can you tell I'm very brand new to gaming ? l.o.l.

ok, time to play and explore.. I love Saturdayss.!!

Next game I must get if this Fallout 3 doesn't pan out for me. Red Dead REdemption(to try it out).. Basically I'm looking for the next Oblivion(aka sand box games and enjoy the stories and do easy kills)..

Oh absolutely, I understand the confusion l.o.l.. I'm on my 3rd day of playing(5 hrs of play so far).. I really want to understand this game because the company that made it also made Oblivion which I love very much..I love love that game so much.. I've been playing that since Fall of 08 on and of. Fallout 3 was also voted Game of the year I think by IGN in 08? so it must be good. I'm looking for the next Oblivion or similar . . But i keep getting nuked at Takoma Park by those Super Mutants who have some sort of nuclear gun which blows up buses and cars l.o.l. If I could only have one of those, I'd nuke them right now..

I'm going back to Megaton and see If I could find Moira to get some guns.. I'm embarrass to say I can't find MOira and her weapons store inside Megaton. They said it's by the crator..

Time to play.. Nice to meet you.:-)

question, are you understanding Fallout 3? meaning are you feeling comfortable with it? I'm not yet and I hope I will..

i switched from oblivion to fallout once fallout 3 came out, to me its like oblivion, anyone who played oblivion will get use to the game mechanics and framework of fallout 3 pretty easy, its like oblivon with guns. thats how i describe it, but if you're just starting, put it on very easy initially and you'll save some ammo, other than that my biggest tip is establish the ammo merchants early on, rivet city, tenpenny tower and underworld are 3 major locations you want to find early on. especially rivet city, also if you take the scroungver perk you'll find more ammo, repair is an important skill.

BTW, one thing I hate even at "very easy" if I can scratched or hit by a gun, my character's heart starts to beat fast, then a few more scratches or gun shots, I die... I think I'm playing it wrong..

Sounds like you're...

1) Low on health
2) Try to take on too many enemies with Banzai tactics
3) Have poor or no armor

If you disarm the bomb in Megaton you have a house there to store stuff.Do you have the guide? It has maps of everything.Don't try to do the main quest right away.Explore so you can gain exp and level up a bit.My main problem is getting around.Everywhere I go I keep hitting blocked streets or tunnels. It's very frustrating.Look at the manual that came with the game.It explains skills.Talk to everyone that's not trying to kill you and look everywhere. When you get lost in the Metro tunnels (and you will) look online or come here.Someone will help you.Don't be afraid to ask.Have fun!

Don't feel pressured to complete the main quest. Just do it when you feel like it. After awhile you'll get used to everything. Like westoftherockies said, repair skill is important. Keep some of those excess guns, as long as they're the same type as your main weapon. Use them to repair it. No repair hammers in Fallout!. Repair skill is one I like to raise up as fast as I can when I level up. Repaired weapons will do more damage.

Craterside Supply is near the top of the crater. When you walk into Megaton, turn right, and follow the path that takes you past Lucas Simms House. You'll go past the Water Processing Plant, then down an enclosed ramp. Craterside Supply will be to your right.

If I were you, I'd leave Tacoma Park for now. Come back when you're stronger. You don't have to pass through it to get to the Museum of Technology, and there's at least one NASTY surprise in there. You may have already found it!

For a small guns, sneaky character, the big (7) skills that you'll want to level up are:

Explosives
Lockpick
Medicine
Repair
Science
Small Guns
Sneak

Of those, I'd say get Small Guns, Sneak up to 50 as soon as possible along with Science and Lockpick shortly thereafter. If you get 15 points when you level up, you might put 10 of them into key skills and sprinkle the other 5 over the rest.
