just bought the pc version

Post » Sat Dec 06, 2014 12:18 am

Hi all I haven't been on in a extremely long time and don't know if this is the right place to post this.

Anyway I just got the pc version of skyrim since it was on sale in steam couldn't pass it up for 4.99.

Anyway I'm wondering does steam have the unoffical patches in the steam workshop because I typed in unofficial patch and nothing popped up or do I have to get them from somewhere else and if so where?

Also is their anything different from the console version besides being able to use mods? Like for example graphics, gameplay, etc.

They are not on Steam. You can download it from several other sites, however: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1504437-relz-unofficial-skyrim-patch-thread-42/

I’ve never used any gaming platform other than PC so I’m not able to comment on any gameplay or graphics differences.

One great feature about the game on PC is the Command Console. This allows you to enter codes to do all kinds of things that range from fixing a broken quest, to getting free if you get stuck between rocks and can’t move, to pausing things in the middle of the action and moving the camera around to take screenshots. Here’s a link with more info: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Console

And speaking of screenshots, the PC lets you take some good ones. Here’s a fine starting point if you’re interested in tips on screenshots: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1510397-show-us-your-screenshots-143/

You may also hear folks sometimes mention making some tweaks to the configuration (.ini) files. There are indeed some nice little tweaks that can be accomplished in this manner. For example, I tweaked the ini so each session starts with the player character set to walk instead of the game’s default setting of always run.

Yes, all of these are nice features that you have on PC version that are not available on console.

Graphics are going to be better on PC as well, provided your PC has the horsepower to handle higher resolution settings/longer draw distances, shadows, etc. The console version options menu does not allow you to set things like resolution, shadows, draw distance and the like the way the PC version does. The options menu in the console version is much more limited than the PC version.

You should be able to use a controller just fine with the PC version of Skyrim. Just plug and play, without needing third party software like Xpadder the way you do for Oblivion and Morrowind.

I'm using a windows 8 hp laptop. so don't have that great of a computer. The game automatically put the settings on medium. I could probably set it on high and see what happens.

I downloaded a few housing, clothing mods, and one texture mod and those seem to work great.

than i'm using the regular keyboard and mouse. haven't found a way to hook a xbox controller up. Don't have a wireless adapter or cable to hook it up but keyboard and mouse are fine for now.

edit: I also messed around with console commands to try to get a few items you couldn't in the console version and didn't work probably entered them wrong.

What type of GPU do you have? If it is an integrated graphics chip, you won't be able to run the graphics very hard. You need a dedicated graphics card for that and, unless you have a gaming laptop, it probably just has a chip on the motherboard to handle graphics, rather than a dedicated card. Although I have heard that the latest Intel chips are better than they used to be and actually have some dedicated graphics RAM, although not very much.

Yeah, you need somethign to connect your controller to your computer. I bought an Xbox controller from microsoft that came with a USB device to plug in, so the computer could communicate with the controller. It works great and will work with any Xbox 360 controller. I tried an off brand USB device and it did not work at all, so might be best to stick with the Microsoft one. Unfortunately, you have to buy it with a package that includes the controller (so you get an extra controller) because Microsoft does nto sell the USB device seperately.

YEah, any typo in a console command will stop it from working. To add an item you need to type "player.additem" then type a space followed by the formid number for the item you want (you can look that up on the UESP website) then a space followed by the number of items you want added (so type "1" if you only want one of the item), then hit return. Then hit the tilde key to close the console and go into your inventory and the item should be there.

The patches were on Steam but got too big, Steam has a strict filesize limit. Other things you may want to get that aren't exactly mods are http://skse.silverlock.org/, necessary for a lot of mods and includes Sheson's patch for memory heaps, http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/24020/? (compatibility version), Project Optimization which adds occlusion planes (computer doesn't render what you can't see, improving some indoor framerates).

There's an in depth guide on all the settings and what they cost in performance from http://www.geforce.co.uk/whats-new/guides/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-tweak-guide#1.

for the graphic chip it says AMD Radeon HD 7340 Graphics

yeah figured, wish Microsoft made a program that just detected wireless controls when turned on or something without having to buy all that stuff.

also thanks I put a space in between the player .additem. so no wonder why it didn't work lol.

That's an integrated graphics chip that shares memory with the CPU, so I would not plan on running too many graphical mods and your game may struggle even in vanilla with some of the higher resolution graphical settings. If you experience trouble you can always back off on the graphics settings.

only advice i can give

read up on how to install mods , if your intention are to use mods that is

there some good articles about how to install on nexus and youtube

and start small and read the descriptions an nstructions last thing you want to do is waste a whole day installing 100 mods only to find your game ctd ing because you have incompatible mods or ia messed up load order

That's good advice. If you plan to use more than a small handful of mods, you will need to spend some time learning about them, how to properly install, the various utilities you will need to manage a large load order, mods that require the script extender, etc.

Now that you have the computer version of the game I would really suggest installing the Creation Kit and playing with it. It is really a lot of fun to play with and it is easy to start small with simply adding a few more storage containers to a player house you bought, then try making a small cottage somewhere in the woods, and so on. It is a game in itself.

ah OK so far I have mods that doesn't require it to be in a certain load order. I have noticed most people put where the mod is supposed to go in the load order. So I haven't really touched the mods that require a certain load order. Except for the unoffical patch that needs to be the first one in the laod order.

For the most part I mostly have small mods. nothing fancy like a giant castle or a whole new region. mostly clothing and items, a few retexture mods, 2 simple houses and a few gameplay improvement mods (mostly for magic) So mostly small stuff. Anyway I'll look into the load order thing the more I get into it but for now i'm happy with the few mods I do I have. I might take a look and try downloading that moonpath to elsweyr mod and if I get that to work that would probably be all I would use but for the most part i'm addicted to skyrim again.

edit: forgot for the skyrim creation kit a bit afraid I would mess something up. Probably might check it out later though.

In a nutshell, load order determines which changes you will see in your game when two or more mods affect the same entry. The reason the unofficial patch needs to load first (after Skyrim itself) is so that any changes the unofficial patch makes can be overridden by other mods.

If you end up using a lot of mods, you may eventually want to merge changes from multiple mods into a single esp that loads last, so you can get as many changes as possible in your game.

For instance, if you have one mod that changes the appearance of Serana and another mod that increases the strength of her spells, whichever is loaded last will take effect in the game and the one loaded earlier won't have any effect because all changes to Serana will be overridden by the mod that loads last.

You can get multiple changes to the same entry from different mods by all such changes into a single esp that loads last, and there are utilities like Wrye Smash that will do this automatically for you.

Your AMD Radeon graphics is NOT an integrated graphics chip, it is a more powerful videocard. But it is a mid-level videocard, so dont max out the settings or install 4096x4096 retexture mods.

There is a free high resolution texture pack that you can get for it, making it look better than the console versions. As for getting mods, this is your best bet here:

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/?

I just noticed you had a pretty basic computer, so you don't really want to get the texture pack. There's lots of mods at the Nexus you can run though.

Hi,

Can I make sure I understand this correctly. So, if a mod changes say, the hairstyle only of a NPC, and another mod that say, changes dialogue options for this NPC, then the second loaded mod will cancel out completely the hairstyle changes the first mod made? Even though they are completely different aspects of the NPC that is affected?

Where are you getting your info? It says here it's an integrated graphics card similar to the Intel HD series and that it shares memory with the CPU. http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-HD-7340.70636.0.html

The Radeon HD 7340 has no memory of its own, but instead shares memory with the CPU.

Yes, that's the rule of one. Only one mod can effect an entry and the last mod loaded wins. The solution is to merge all such changes into a single esp that loads last.

Crap! I didn't know ATI made anything like this! I thought only Intel made graphics chips without dedicated memory.

-My bad.

Ah, i never knew that till now, thanks for the info and for looking it up. I guess I'll be sticking to medium graphics then unless I get a gaming laptop or a better computer.
