Is it just me or did anyone else notice the trees?

Post » Wed May 05, 2010 4:56 pm

Didn't read everything by now, so dunno if it was already mentioned.
What I totally dislike is that I don't see any roots at some of the trees.
So they seem just to be stuck into thte ground.

Here's an good example
http://skyrimguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/SkyrimTrailer1-1.jpg

You're actually right.

I'd like to see a game (for a change) that connects between landscape and models in a good way without the annoying cutting edges.
I thought it could happen here due to the dynamic snow and weather feature. But I guess it won't this time...

Oh, and don't worry, I do realize how hard it is to implement. If it was easy then people would've done it already...

Nonetheless, I'd really like to see some roots peeping from the ground, blending with their surroundings nicely.

Speaking of trees I just heard Todd say something exciting that I hadnt noticed him say of the game b4 but I may have just missed it but having to to do with trees,... they actually grow back !!!!! this sounds like we can actually cut them down not just cut logs does it not ???

That was pretty obvious, at least to me. I mean, how else would there be towns with full production of lumber. And how else would woodcutting work in the game, seeing as we also see it in the trailer partly.

Pretty cool though. Where did you hear it?

I don't see it. I just see roots or something foliage-like near the left "shore-rock-line".

I'm on my phone so it's hard to do. There's a thread on the first page though. It's titled "IG Extended".

Frankly, we have already seen multiple trees, all of which look great (will look worlds better on the PC with AA and AAA) and they all have variety and all look like real trees you would find in the world.

So basically I say, don't worry about things that you "haven't seen" and think they aren't in. Just because you haven't seen something doesn't mean it doesn't exist (even though we have seen plenty of variation in trees, just not massive trees yet). You don't see me going and making a thread saying "I haven't seen daedra yet", even though it's pretty much a given that daedra are going to be in. Too much worrying about things that should be a given.

Most of the trees we have seen so far are pine, they tend not to have roots showing a lot. It's best to not have your roots exposed to the cold.

Did you really read what I wrote to clarify this matter?

From what we've seen so far, trees don't have the greatest variety in Skyrim. To be clear, I'm not referring to the rest of Skyrim which we have not seen. I am referring to the places we have seen. In my opinion Beth could use a bigger variety of tree types over there, with more rugged and complex plant life, such as bigger trees, taller trees, trees with more leaves on them.

The tree on the left nearest the water seems to have root 'branching' near the base. I thought that was what we were looking for?

Doesn't look at all like roots to me. More like a wider log.

Can't find or hear the reference of trees growing back after being cut down in that IG extended video. What time?

I read just fine and I made a post towards your post, then if you read, I broke that statement into another paragraph, that shows I had moved on to another line of discussion, that line of discussion being the fact boils down to the very thing about you not seeing thick trees, so there for they most not exist. Well we have seen plenty of screens about varying tree types, so the worry about variation is unneeded. Besides, the trees in fall forest are a varying thickness from the pines as well. It all comes down to "I haven't seen thick trees so they must not exist" and all I'm saying is put your mind at rest because chances are there are thick trees and if there isn't when the game comes out, make a forum post about it and someone will probably make thick trees.

I think Todd meant that since they are making an ES, and not Fallout, the artists can go crazy and "grow" as many trees as they want.

About growing back, Far Cry 2 had a great system for that
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7uK_YmnlZY
Ok, for hundred years old pine trees that's something we won't see for sure, but it would be cool seeing that on smaller vegetation...

However, you'r right with the root thingy on pines but they should get wider on the bottom what we've already seen. But what we saw too, there are still alot of trees which just pops out of the ground and thats something what kills immersion for me.
But yes, hard to implement for sure ...

I never stated that just because we haven't seen thick trees they aren't in. I did mention that we haven't seen them, or that we lack them in certain areas. But I did not state that just because we don't see them, they aren't in.

In the fall forest the thickness looks (again) about the same as the pines, if you look at the trailer's running part at the beginning you'll notice that they are not different comparable by thickness.

That's exactly what I thought as well when I first heard it and that's why I was a bit confused when someone else here said the grew back.

Extremely cool, I actually hope that's how they implement trees, but since they don't use it and from what we've seen so far, I doubt it :)

at 3:14 in the video is about where it is start at 3:12 and within like 6 seconds you will hear him say trees grow here so go crazy,... and the other guy may be right I think I jumped ahead of myself in my excitement as he probably is referring to the game designers , sorry my bad I did not mean to spread false info,... I blame them for making me crazy with not enough info being released ,... lol

Would be cool though, to have trees grow. I think it's logical as well, as we all know we can wood cut in the game.

Yep that was the context. Still the trees you fell WILL re spawn as everything else does otherwise game saves would be too large remembering them all.

Edit: oh and on topic, Oblivion didn't have trees in various stages of growth as is clearly seen in Skyrim so we are already blessed with a diversity not present previously. Rejoice and be merry.
