Is it just me, or did companion AI get much worse post-patch

Post » Thu May 20, 2010 10:43 am

Boone seems to behave completely erratically now. During battles, he insists on getting right in front of me, interfering with my aim. When at peace, half the time he runs around aimlessly, and half the time he stands a good distance away looking like the most stupid object in the scenery. The constant weapon-switching has gotten worse. too. Finally, he has become a lousy shot! I have actually taken friendly fire from him a couple of times.

ED-E seems to have steering issues now. He constantly gets lost in the hills and mountains. At the ambush site on the exit from Nipton, while I was taking out the Vipers up on the cliffs ED-E disappeared, then spawned a LONG distance away and made his way to me from there... triggering every single frag mine on the road.

Is it just me, or is companion AI worse than it used to be?

Companion AI goes up & down per patch per individual's game. Patch 1.2 is where I noticed more of the companions running off into the distance and refusing to go through doors & other things etc. :)

...Boone's about the same as ever for me re:general idiocy. You're on PC aren't you golem? Use the http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=38842 for the holstering issue. (edit: oh nvm, you probably meant going from melee to ranged - the patch did lower Boone's default weapon crit. dmg by a lot. I haven't had him switch weapon styles much on me tho)

I don't see any difference in my companions. I use Veronica and ED-E. Veronica is still a power fisting machine, and ED-E is still a 1 shot killer.

Well, it sure looked like I did. :S A Giant Rat got between Boone and myself in the Broc Flower Cave, Boone fired and I took a hit. May have been the rat, of course, but it looked like it was attacking Boone, not me...

Boone can't make up his mind. He aims at something with his rifle, switches to machete, and just keeps switching, indecisive on how to kill an enemy.

The AI in the game has always been bad and they need to fix it.

I've always had problems with companions, whether it's bad AI or slowing my game down.

They can try cant they?

Exactly. Plus with a better engine to run F4 off of it would be far superior.

They're AI, what can you really expect?
Boone has allways done that thing of pulling out his machette and going 'nyaah!'. I thought it was he was a bit of a poser, because it does look quite tough and cool, and it's quite reassuring to have someone with so much bravado covering you.

And Ed-E? That thing has allways been mental!!
I made the mistake of taking it to the quarry the other day (Had some hankering for a deathclaw ommelette) and my charecter and boone were stealthily working our way round the edges, very stealthy, very sneaky. I'd of course set Ed-E to be the same (Ie dont attack unless I do, stay close, etc).
In the distance, I see a group of Deathclaws, they look big, they look scary. Me and Boone are staying back, checking out the terrain, evaluating the situation, making a plan on how best to take out the [censored]ers. And then "BEEPEPEPEEPEDEE BEEEE BEEEEEEE!!!" and, Ed-E just shoots off, firing off it's pissant little lasers at the entire bloody gang of Deathclaws... And there wasnt a damn thing I could do about it.
Of course, ED-E got smacked down by one Deathclaw, it was not disimilar to a human swatting a mosquito out of the air with a rolled up magazine..
[Ed-E is unconcious]
But then of course, the Deathclaws were closer. And scented fresh, tasty, human flesh. After swarming over Ed-Es poor unconcious body they stampeded towards the myself and boone...

But that's just AI for you. It's the same in many games, and not a particular issue with the makers of Fallout!
There's only a limit to how intelligent AI can actuallty be, unfortunately..

They should really call it something else, because it's not actually intelligence.
Like... "PSRB" for "Pre-Scripted Reactive Behavior"

The only odd experience I've had with the AI so far is the fact that every time I fast travel to the Gun Runners shop, Veronica takes off to the south. Not sure where she tries to go... I think I'll follow her next time.

This has been happening pre- and post-patch, by the way. Just to make it more relevant.

I hate how ED-E always insists on chasing down anything when the "Caution" appears while sneaking. I set him to passive, but he's a bloodhound. The others do this from time to time as well and it gets old when fighting enemies who destroy in packs, like Reavers or nightstalkers.

When Boone senses danger, he is constantly switching from ranged to melee even though he's set to ranged. Once in combat, he stays ranged. And Ed-e has never attacked unless I attacked or was under attacked while in passive. Ed-e and Boone are a perfect pair with deathclaw hunting
