Is it just me, or does DT make the Serivce Rifle basically u

I think it was one of those balance guns that are meant to not be used by the players... but can kill them if they have 4 dudes shooting them with it. There are clearly better weapons for the players, but for AI in an NCR base it puts a level cap into going in there and kicking the [censored] out of everyone. It also sells well so if you find one just grab it, repair it, then sell it while keeping your grade A guns. It does good damage against you but up to a deathclaw its not the first choice clearly.

Three. And I've seen pleeeenty of screenshots with this outfit too. :)

And it's game balance. You'd be raging about how lowly NCR troopers were [censored] you if it was 'good'. It is good in the early stages or if you have low strength anyway. It also fits with the universe somewhat - A cheap and easy weapon to make with the light industrial base the NCR probably has and easy to use in the hands of a basic trained grunt. If you notice almost every senior soldier uses 'good' guns. :D

You think DT makes the service rifle useless? At least you can load up 5.56mm AP rounds in that. Poor energy weapons have no such alternative.

I use it as a backup for when I run out of Hunting Rifle ammo. Only lvl 12 or something.

At lower level I used one successfully on a bunch of legion goons, but only with AP ammo. Since then it's been sitting in ED-E in case I find something that can be repaired with it.

It's a good weapon when used with HP and AP rounds, actually. Not better than most of what you can find, but still pretty decent at lower-levels.

Change Service Rifle to "two thirds of the energy weapons" and I'll agree.
Haven't tried guns yet but when I saw that weapon for the first time on an hostile NCR trooper I was like "OOOH [censored]!" but then it took away a small tick with every shot and I almost laughed so hard I fell off my chair.

It has its place in the game just like every other gun. The ammo type isn't used by many other guns. It is a great backup weapon and great to use against lesser targets to save ammo once you have better guns with rare/expensive ammo. Many of these apply to a lot of lower level guns. As a few have mentioned before, mods help a lot, but if you aren't on PC, use it strategically and it is very useful.

IMHO this seems to be the weapon that the Service Rifle is based on (at least it's appearance):

If they made a few changes to make the ammunition types more unique, I think the service rifle would be more useful in the long run. Just give the smaller caliber rifle rounds (5.56,5mm) more armor penetration capability with every type of munition (relative) then I think it'd be all good. For example, give the basic munition (DT-5, DMGx1.0) and AP better penetration capability than current. Would fix some of the problems and keep the weapons that use these munitions better over the long haul rather than making the .308 round so dominant.

I was extremely excited when I saw it on the Wiki months before the game came out. As soon as I started playing, I was just on a mission to find one. Once I got it, I was pretty disappointed. I thought that it might have some cool mods for it though. Even those are disappointing. It weighs too much. It's damage is weak. It's just not a good weapon.

More likely based of the semiautomatic AR-15 seeing that the AR-10 is a 7.62mm rifle

The Cowboy Repeater is my weapon of choice, although, due to its reloading time it does bring about some foolish deaths if I’m not smart about it. The Service Rifle is my last resort back up weapon for low level critters and lightly armored foes (Powder Gangers) – or when my better weapons are close to disrepair. Also, the path I’m taking through the game 5.56 ammunition seems to be the most plentiful, so it always has plenty of bullets on hand to make up in volume what it lacks in power.

Exactly. The SR looks to be patterned after http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAR-15 which was supposed to be a civilian weapon. These would be semi-auto, firing one shot at a time. I'd expect a Militia like the NCR troops to use this type of weapon.

Me, I've used the Varmint rifle most of the time for sniping, and the Cowboy Repeater for close combat. I got that Cowboy Repeater at level 4 or so. They're pretty common to find on Jackal Gang members south of Primm. I have a .357 Magnum and the weathered 10mm pistol, but never use them.

Ha you want idiotic design try the bleeping laser rifle.. 33% less damage and its using freaking bloody bleeping micro fusion cells as ammo. Who in gods name would design a rifle like that?

When both mods are installed and using AP ammo it's not that bad. Kinda wish there was a third (expensive) mod that gave it tri-burst firing mode and extended the mags to 21-24 rounds.

The Laser rifle is my primary weapon. The ammo is plentiful, the scope makes it great for sniping, and it has a very high critical rate. Add the +3 damage mod and beam splitter, then it really can pack a punch even up close.

I keep it for Boone when I first meet him...unless I already have 2 Cowboy Shooters..then I just give him one of those. Meaning I wouldn't have the gun anymore if I had 2 well repaired Cowboy Shooters.
It is pretty useless after Novac anyway..

I use That Gun because of the 5.56 AP rounds fired from a handgun. Since it doesn't slow you down while drawn, you can wander the wasteland, and aren't going to be caught with your pants down by anything that jumps out at you.

About the only reason I have the service rifle around, is because of the quick reload times (compared to cowboy repeater). For low and mid-level opponents, that's a life-saver! Nothing worse than waiting for the repeater to reload 11 rounds as you're getting tag-teamed by cazadors.

But, I'm 100% with you guys on the Varmit Rifle - and I've not even gotten the silencer on it yet!

Does anybody actually use the Service Rifle?

The first one I got sits in the safe in Novac...fully modded and at 100% condition. Any others I come across get used to repair my sniper rifle. The NV version of the sniper rifle is a beast, I love that thing.

With jury rigging, these things are useful for repairing my assault carbine, but that's about all I use them for.
