Is it just me or does oblivion....

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 2:26 am

feel like it has more diversity and is bigger in more aspects of Skyrim. Trust me I'm not one of those people who's stuck in my old ways, in fact I played 500+ hours of Skyrim before I touched Oblivion. Skyrim is what made me want to try Oblvion.

Anyway after playing oblivion for a while now I can't help but to feel I may like it better in some ways. For example a simple quest like following someone to see where they are buying their stolen goods from in Oblvion seems much more entertaining compared to Skyrim's tailing missions.

There is more than that though. Stores and merch seem they have better diversity. Spells is a whole new ball game in Oblvion, you can create spells!? Why would they leave this out of Skyrim, bad move if you ask me but nobody is so that's why lol. I'd imagine all you elder's of the scroll games must have not been happy to see spell making gone.

I love Skyrim and enjoyed and still enjoy playing it. It just seems like its smaller, not in the physical sense like map size but I found half way through the game I started not to even look in chests or go into stores because I had everything I ever needed. In oblivion I'm pretty far into and I love searching for items and going into stores, you never know what you'll get.

I don't know I just feel Skyrim holds your hand more and except for graphics and combat it seem as if it was made before Oblivion. If you put Skyrkm's graphics and the physics into Oblivion I'd swear Oblivion was made after Skyrim.

I need a computer because after seeing some of these mods the fans have made it seems they put back alot of the stuff missing from Skyrim. They have done an amazing job at making Skyrim up to par. They really out do themselves with this mods. Great job modders.

All the TES games have their goods and bads. Its just how things work.

Cyrodiil is indeed a more diverse place, but look at its location. Smack dab in the center of the continant, so its surrounded by many different landscapes and biomes.

Same feel
AND menu is a lot better, dont u prefer this http://www.pibweb.com/review/images/oblivion_quest.jpg rather then this http://talunon.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/skyrim-start-menu.png, it just gets you more into game, Skyrim has that modern look that is not for RPG games IMO

Morrowind better overall arch of quests touching or connecting to the mq plus a much better mq and game polics efecting the game.
Oblivion had more dynamic guild quests and side quests with both morrowind and ob tied as far as citys structures
Skyrim had better graphics and better combat

Well, the games get more shallow with each iteration. But only because we forget to include the "small stuff" that makes it broader. I much prefer being an archer in Skyrim compared to Oblivion. Although I prefer dice roll mechanics in an RPG, I would never go back to Morrowinds system where the misses weren't graphically explained. We could customize far better in Daggerfall, but had to "suffer" (at least today) sprite graphics. 1st person (which I prefer) is now lacking, but better support for the 3rd person fans.

Yes, there are many areas that I complain about, but I don't think I give enough praise to the things that I really DO appreciate either. Long gone the exploits from previous titles, even if we get some new ones that tend to break balance too easily.

I'm with you on this. I felt Oblivion was deeper too. But that just might be the nostalgia talking.

I know, people said how uninteresting and how bland OB was; now it's much deeper than it's sequel.

Is it really helping or hurting Bethesda and other developers by creating games that are much more user friendly. The keep making them more of a "hold your hand" game. It seems more people don't like that them do. I understand they want everyone to just jump in and be familiar with everything but it really robs everyone else of what the game could be. I don't want my hand held, in fact I'm tired of games doing this. It makes the game much easier to play and even by turning up the difficulty it still is pretty easy.

Fallout 3 was my first true rpg I had ever played and I thought they did a great job at it. I remember when I first started fallout I actually hated it, I wasn't familiar with RPGs, I couldn't stand not having a direct line telling me where to go. Now I prefer the opposite. I went back to GameStop to trade it in and they guy I really should try and give it a chance, so
I did and now it's one of my favorite games ever. I just hope they don't take away from that lonely feeling you get out in the wasteland if they make a new one, basically the feeling you get wandering around the wasteland was awesome.

Complaints are always voiced more often and more loudly than praise, remember that.

Also, I could have sworn that this exact topic was posted earlier today and then locked for "not being productive." Hopefully this time it won't get cut short.

Unfortunately Ive never played Morrowind, started with Oblivion late by the end of 2009, after beating the MQ kept downloading mods and right now, I miss in Skyrim the feel that OOO gave to Oblivion... those Vvanderfell rangers were very tough, had some amazing time venturing inside the Ayleid ruins after the artifacts... back then I hated any Ayleid ruin, right now I can't stand the dwemmer ruins and miss the feel of the Ayleid ones... this is just nostalgia. Skyrim is a great game, I'm having a lot of fun.

Oblivion is far from deep. All Oblivion really had going for it in comparison to Skyrim is that the quest lines lasted longer and we still had attributes and a few more skills.

Ya it probably will get locked but I just had to know what other people thought and I'm not saying one is better than the other. I love them both. You can't deny they are amazing games. My whole point was just I didn't why they would leave out some of the cool features in oblivion, maybe to add different cool features in skyrim. They both have things that the other doesn't. Like for instance I love the spell making in Oblivion but in Skyirm I love the spell casting. I'm sure they will add some new spells in dlc. Which I almost forgot new announcements this month yaaay!

Oblivion had better magic, storylines, spell making, and individual quests.

Skyrim had better combat, dialogue system (but not actual dialogue), world design, animations, and scaling.

I would consider Oblivion the better of the two, even if Skyrim excelled in more aspects. Skyrim just couldn't keep my attention with the poor plotlines.

If Skyrim had the same leveling system as Oblivion, I'd have stopped playing hundreds of hours ago.

This Person is Wise

Not even a TES game can nail everything, 2/3 threads in this forums can tel you that, and as I believe he implied, the landscapes aroound it kinda stretch into so Cyrodiil is kinda that piece of the pizza with toppings from each slice...

the only thing that comes to mind when i think of something i want back form oblivion is spell making, and i doubt ill ever get that...

leveling system has improved, the storylines may be a bit worse, but hey whatch'ya gonna do?, graphics are 9x as good, the holds are well fashioned, although i wisht here was a single larger city instead of a lot of small, and smaller ones... you know its just the little thing sthat bug me, idk about you...

While I liked spell making, it also had the side effect of making every single existing spell in the game useless, because the player could always make a better version with more effects. You can argue Skyrim's crafting system allows this, but there are still legendaries that do things the player can't pull off. If spell making is added in another TES (or an expansion for Skyrim, but I doubt it) they need to add spells to the world that are effective beyond what the player can whip up.

Gonna have to disagree with you completely here O.o
The only thing Skyrim beat Oblivion in was Graphics, Combat, and Voice acting o.o
It's basically the same thing that happened going from Morrowind to Oblivion

So much Unique Spell effects lost, Magic is complete crap compared to what it was. the Guilds just aren't very widespread in Skyrim as they were in Oblivion, it seemed that now the only real good reason to join them now is to do their quests.
Attributes made a lot better character diversity and made it feel more of an RPG, while in Skyrim you can't even modify your running speed.
Creating a Class I feel was better than making one on the way, even if it meant you had to restart if you didn't like it. Not like you could blame anyone for something you chose.
Vampires are even more sad in Skyrim :|
Don't put your opinion out as if it's a Fact. most of us prefer more content in the newer version of games :|

Yeah I would have liked to seen stronger enchantments on some of the disenchantable, daedra/legendary weapons. Make them things you can't duplicate or approximate through overpowered enchantment/smithing.

Skyrim just needs more spells, not to be able to craft a fireball spell that also heals you 5 points.

Oh and msa I played TES Forums Drinking Game once...I just got out of the hospital.

huh... back to MW hm?

Let me put it this way:

MW was so great, trying to create something better or equal, would feel like repition with better graphics...
thats my take on why oblivion isnt the mirror image of Morrwind... and why skyrim isnt the mirror image of oblivion,
todd howard, the devs, everyone in beth knows what we want more then we do, if we got everything we wanted, well... i dont think TES woulda made it to skyrim...

The quests were better in Oblivion to a large degree, but I blame Skyrim's journal, not the actual quests themselves, for a lot of the feeling that the quests are shallow and repetitive. A few extra lines could make all the difference; a bit of extra background, some directions, something to motivate you and make you feel it was worth it. And any extra would be text, no need for extra voice acting.

As for the spells, I can quite easily live without spellmaking, but the actual amount of tomes is shockingly low.

The reason I can forgive Skyrim's flaws compared to Oblivion (apart from the obvious broken attribute levelling) is Skyrim has imho an amazing world; Oblivion had a good world too, but a good candy-coloured fairy-tale lunatic asylum of a world, they went for cold grimness in Skyrim and I believe they got it just right.
