I ask you, what happens when a Daedric Prince dies and leaves no heir?

Daedra cannot be killed. They can only be banished.

Nalion's and Arynel's posts on this topic are good. I thought I'd add that in "Morrowind" you meet three Aedric avatars: Wulf (Tiber Septim), John Hawker (Zenithar) and an avatar of Mara. This does seem the exception, however, only granted to the Nerevarine. In the case of rescuing John Hawker and Mara's avatar, it seems like a test -- I think the avatars could have escaped their captors at any time, but they waited for you as a test.

You gotta remember also that nobody else saw them AT ALL, like you said, possibly as an exception to the Nerevarine because he's so special. ask around Ghostgate, and people are like "Old Imperial veteran? You're a nut."

Also I want to say that mantling is hard. I mean, yeah, sometimes it gets kind of obvious if the guy turns into a huge dragon (although I remember right after Oblivion came out there a lot of people figured that was the purpose of the Ayleidic artifact), but let's take the Nerevarine for example. Back in the day, Akatosh killed Lorkhan and ripped out his heart (according to a good amount of folk, anyway). The Nerevarine takes a big hammer and smashes it, kind of finishing the job Akatosh started. Does that count for anything?

If it counted for something, what would it count for?

Does it count as some kind of mantling thing? I mean, obviously it was explained by the playacting thing, but what about doing the stuff a god wanted to do but didn't get the chance to?

Just my opinion, but smashing the heart seems like a lesser version of Lorkhan's overthrow; only a shadow of the original battle (betrayal?) when Lorkhan was dismembered and cast down. The Nerevarine is stopping Akulakhan, true, but it doesn't seem on the same scale as the original battle of the gods. Just my opinion, though.

Well, isn;t mantling a god usually at least somewhat more of a shadow? I mean, a lot of the stuff has been done, and is impossible to do again, so doing the second-best, then third-best, seems the only way to do it eventually.

Also, somehow it just hit me that you're essentially "Mantling" nerevar the entire Morrowind MQ, as you unite the Ashalnders and the Houses under one banner and go into Red Mountain. I've been playing since 2003 and just got that now, six years late.

I guess you are mantling Nerevar in a way (or more likely, you're his reincarnation). But you only mantle gods as far as I know, so maybe it's not possible in the Nerevarine's case; Nerevar was a hero but not a god.

And it never ocurred to you when the Wise Woman said "You are not the Nerevarine, but you can be"? Meh, oh well.

Nerevarine never destroyed the heart. He released the enchantments placed on it by the Dwemer that allowed people to manipulate it. Where it is now... who knows, but I have never seen something die by spinning really fast and then disappearing in a puff of magical energy.

Actually, no. IIRC, it has been stated by MK that this is a case of rebirth indeed, and hence no mantling. Even though of course the failed incarnates do make it appear like mantling in a way, as its measured by how the prophecies are fulfilled...

As I recall it, he (and just about everyone else) said that the player could choose. Whether the PC has the exact same splinter of lunar currency that Nerevar had is (imo) irrelevant and unknowable. It's a question of choosing whether or not to walk in his footsteps, and those of the prophecy.

"Nerevarine: "Pantheon by incarnation, as all alive now know."
From Nu-Hatta.

From the same source:
"Mantling and incarnation are separate roads; do not mistake this. The latter is built from the cobbles of drawn-bone destiny"

That seems quite definite to me. It also makes sense: Its not said that the Nerevarine would mantle Nerevar. He fulfills the prophecies, yes, but everything else is left up to the player - who could try to walk Nerevars path, or as well try to be as un-nerevar-y (besides fulfilling the prophecies) as possible.
