Just got Daggerfall

Post » Wed Jul 28, 2010 12:27 pm

I remember my first day out of the dungeon, I began to walk. I walked towards a town, it was on the worldmap.

I walked.

and walked.

and walked some more.

whenever I brought up the worldmap, I had not moved!!

I ran.
ran....

ran...ran....

still not moved!!

[I read that someone gave up, at that point; the worldmap is supposed to be *as large* as England!]

its too bad that Beth didnt include roads that you could follow between the cities.

It doesn't help that the smallest indicator you get on the world map is still large enough to hold 4 Daggerfalls.

Just remember this a game where new things are still found....over 10 years after release...

you get the idea of its scope. Some interesting stats

The gameworld is 63,125 square miles, which is the equilient of twice the size of great Britian. A game reviewer once set the game to walk/run from one side of the map to the other, took it two weeks, real time.

There are over 750,000 NPCs in the game, while most are randomly generated, you would be hard pressed to find two that have the same story.

The walking across the gameworld was an estimate; nobody actually took 2 weeks doing that. People have run across the world, but it sure as heck doesn't take 2 weeks. IIRC it took me about 4 hours with super speed, so by normal speeds it couldn't take more than a day.

And as for the size, it's been calculated by our dear own Zingar Baltus to be about 131,072 km^2 (50,607 mi^2), which is very close to the size of 1 http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/customs/questions/britain.html. That's about the size of http://www.enchantedlearning.com/usa/states/area.shtml.

Cheers

I could have sworn that somebody did attempt it, and it took two weeks. I also could've sworn that you previously mentioned your attempt only being from one end of Daggerfall to the other, not the entire Iliac Bay.

The 2-weeks always struck me as a reviewer or someone going "wow, this game is so huge, it must take over 2 weeks to get across it!" or by running for half an hour, getting nowhere, and making a crude calculation. I mean, can you honestly imagine someone running in the game for 2 weeks straight?

I also could've sworn that you previously mentioned your attempt only being from one end of Daggerfall to the other, not the entire Iliac Bay.

It was a pretty long time ago, but it was over the entire game map--diagonally, even, I believe, because I remember starting in the furthest corner of the Wrothgarian Mountains and having to readjust my heading every now and then with the compass to ensure a more-or-less straight line. It was with an absurdly hacked character, loaded with speed-enhancing enchantments, levitation (so I could fly above towns rather than running into them), and the super-speed cheat. Also a really good restore fatigue spell and items. Weights on the keyboard, played FF3 in the other room and checked it every now and then. I just don't remember about how long it was, but it couldn't have been more than 4 or 5 hours tops.

Happy with the whole story now? ;)

OK!

So I just timed my character running across the edges of Daggerfall City a few times (including the outlying wilderness that is also a part of the pixel), and it took an average of 1min20sec (100 speed and running, zero encumbrance). The game world being 1000x500 pixels, hypotenuse about 1120 pixels. 1120pixels x 80 sec is 89600 sec or 24.8 hours to run diagonally across the game world. It would take longer for someone with lower stats, maybe 2 days but never 2 weeks.

Jor is spot-on here. Daggerfall City is the maximum size of a world square (represented by a single pixel on the 1000x500 http://www.uesp.net/tamriel/image.shtml?geography/images/dfsmallmap.gif from WOODS.WLD). Any average crossing time multiplied out by the number of map pixels crossed will yield a good time estimate.

Edit: For map link.

LOL :). Jor's the one destroying myths, I just wanted to back him up. Don't worry, I'm sure the "two-weeks realtime to cross" meme will reappear once this thread sinks off the first page. It sure feels like two weeks if you actually try crossing the map at normal running speed.

Perhaps those rumors are about game time and not real-time. If you take 1 minute to be one hour of game time then 2 weeks of game time sounds reasonable.

Heh, ive never said my attempt. And i always say daggerfall as the game, not the city cell....its confusing at times

I remember getting this info quite a few years ago, accuraty isnt the best. glad to see that that been proved wrong. ;)
