Just got Daggerfall

Post » Wed Jul 28, 2010 9:40 am

Its been a while since Ive played TES. Ive only ever played III and IV, and just now got the random urge to get my hands on Daggerfall and try it out. Its a completely new game to me, and I know nothing about it. Any suggestions, advice, things I should know before starting? What kind of character should I make? How long can I expect to addictively play the game? etc, etc

Unless you're totally hung up on glossy graphics, I think you can expect to be horribly addicted for no fewer than several months, and likely more than a year.. Oh, and don't mind some grammatical deficiencies in dialogue, either. It's a cute idiosyncrasy, not a design flaw.. Remember, this game's virtual world DWARFS that of Morrowind or Oblivion. It's f'n HUUUUUGE!

Have a read of http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall%3a%44aggerfall if you've never played it before, you'll find a lot of usefull info and tips. If you can see past the dated graphics you will find a game that lets you do just about anything you want.

You're looking for a stone archway with a skull in the corner; that's the exit.

You haven't seen anything yet, wait until you get to a real dungeon.

Heh. Dungeons can get HUGE and very complex. You can expect to get lost often. Get Mark and Recall as soon as possible.

Fixed. ;)

They're one and the same in Daggerfall.

As it suggests on the UESP Wiki, definitely employ the (follow consistently to one side) method, taking only right turns or only left turns until you cannot proceed further or end up retracing steps. It'll help, though it's often not the fastest solution (and won't necessarily get you into every cell of the dungeon without a little creative disobeyance).

i also recommend using the compass & the map, you are the red dot and the exit is the blue one.

Privateer's Hold too big? You got lost?

Bah!

Man up! :foodndrink:

PH is the smallest dungeon in the game. Only graveyards are smaller. Cities are also complicated.

This isn't a child's shoot-em-up.

This is Daggerfall.

This ain't no party. This ain't no disco. This ain't no playing around.

We can help, but if PH stumps you, try harder!

BTW: a lot of the preceding advice (other posts, not mine) was dubious at best.

News to me... Daggerfall is awesome fun party times dancing in circles around orcs while jumping off walls you climb and turning them into arrow pincusions while listening to the awesome background music.

Are you being funny & trying to make it harder for OP to figure out what to do? Seems to me there is validity in EVERY ONE of those posts.. May be difficult to completely grasp what's being said without actually applying the advice, but...

It's pretty straightforward until you get to the big room with the stairs (throne room). Either take the door to the left of the stairs, climb the wall behind the throne, or get on the throne and pull the lever beside it. Once you're up there, go down the hall, and IIRC it's the first door on the right. The exit's in there.

I'd fully explore the area though. It's an easy starter dungeon where you can get some supplies early on. If you take the throne/elevator you'll miss out on some treasure.

Once you leave PH, you could go to DF, but I'd advise going to Gothway Garden and joining a guild. Gothway's a smaller town and easier to navigate. The horses there are pretty cheap, too. Do some adventuring there until either you get the letter from Lady Whats-her-face or until you're level 3. You might wanna go back in PH to do some leveling since dungeons get restocked when you leave. Most of the local non-quest dungeons are little tombs and such. Not much treasure there. I'd advise joining the Mages Guild straightaway, though, so you can have access to levitate, water breathing, and a healing spell. Also the recall spell. Those are MUST HAVE spells. Get those spells and get your butt to level three and you should be good to go.

Another bonus: You don't have to fast-travel there! Its within easy walking distance.

What direction is Gothaway from the exit of PH?

EDIT: Also, Im missing out on this so called 'great game music' cause my sound doesnt work for the game :banghead: The sound setup for the game, using Windows, is QUITE confusing. Any ideas?

Directly South... I dunno how to solve your sound issue... Use DOSbox, as always.

South, but you'd be better off pressing W and going to the fast travel map. You will almost never actually walk from one location to another, as they are far apart and have no roads to follow.

As for sound, if you are using DOSbox (as any sane person would), just set it to soundblaster and the default ports.

You can also use "MPU-401" for the music, that is similar to "General Midi" and sounds kind of like RuneScape. I prefer the Soundblaster music as it's more nostalgic, although MPU-401 offers more tracks.

the guy who made the music and posted here saying he used general midi when composing the music, this is how i remember playing it also.

if you are not using Dos Box to play, you will run into invisible/missing quest objects.

Actually, Eric Heberling said he used a Roland GM Sound Canvas, but that's fairly close to General MIDI anyways.

I remember my first day out of the dungeon, I began to walk. I walked towards a town, it was on the worldmap.

I walked.

and walked.

and walked some more.

whenever I brought up the worldmap, I had not moved!!

I ran.
ran....

ran...ran....

still not moved!!

[I read that someone gave up, at that point; the worldmap is supposed to be *as large* as England!]

The only town to which I walk/run to is Gothway Garden. The closest town to Privateer's Hold.

Or sometimes, if my destination is one square from where I am, I'll walk instead of fast-travelling.
