Just Got Dragon Age What Can I Expect?

Thanks guys for all the help appreciate it. How do you give gifts to party members?

Not sure how the interface works on console versions, but on PC you just select the character you want to give the gift on the inventory screen and "use" the item.

And some gifts are specific to certain characters, their codex page hints on what they like. As a PC user i cheat and have a mod that displays the gifts recipient in it's description

That cutscene at the tower is sweet!

Edit: should I be putting points into warrior or just continue dumping them into dual wield?

It's a good game, good and rich story-line. But, it's not too open world, more linear than freeform.

If you buy it, you won't be disappointed.

If you're planning on going for a 2 sword dual wielder (as opposed to a dual dagger) I would go for the whirlwind branch (starts with dual weapon sweep) first, then the dual weapon line (training, finesse, etc) as they become available. Then you can go for punisher. Taunt and disengage are useful for a double sword wielder because you can run into a mob, taunt, then use your AoE skills like whirlwind, then disengage to recover and pick off whatever enemies survived. I liked the line branch that started with powerful as well, because I wanted bravery and deathblow's bonuses.

Then you have your specialization talents to think about later on too...

EDIT: And if you're putting attribute points into anything but dexterity and strength, stop! Just get ~36 dexterity for your talents and then pump the rest into strength.

I'm using a longsword and dagger dual wield set up. I've put points into strength, dexterity and I've used some on constitution but I won't put any more towards constitution. I'm no where near whirlwind or punisher yet I have dual striking and dual sweep along with dual wield finesse.

Edit: loving the game so far as well. Thanks for all the feedback keep it coming!

Longsowrd + dagger isn't very good though, iirc. If you use two daggers, you can have high attack speed and pump up your dexterity as high as you can (with minimal strength for the biggest armor). That gives you a lot of damage, but it'll be focused on one enemy. If you're planning on using dual longswords (which you'll be able to do at level 12, assuming you have the other three dual weapon talents and 36 dex) then you get more aoe damage. Picking one or the other is the most efficient way to go about it.

Only Rogues can pick locks by using Deft Hands skill. Runes are attached to Weapons and armor by using http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKr6DnF8XmU

I prefer playing as Rogue when making Dual Wield character. Dual Daggers and backstab is awesome, far better compared to Warrior.

Do you have to be a rogue to duel wield daggers or can I do that with my warrior? Is the backstab only a rogue talent?

Only requirement to using daggers is to meet the Dexterity requirements. Class is irrelevant. Only rogues can backstab, however.

Dragon Age is a really great game. The story is excellent and the characters feel like real people with meaningful personalities. Can't wait for the second one in March.

But there is a flanking damage bonus for warriors too, i believe? Except against Sword & Shield warriors with Shield Tactics skill. BTW, [censored] Scattershot :swear:

When you make it out of Lothering to your camp, you'll find an npc who can use that rune for you. Some weapons have boxes/slots/sockets when you look at them in your inventory. Those weapons can have runes added.

Don't miss the companions you can find in Lothering.

It sounds as if Dragonborn1 is still in the Ostagar levels, in the tower? Anyway, I knew he would like the Tower of Ishal level and the game if he gives it a chance.

Yea I was just about to leave lothering but I realized I had gone everywhere except that tavern. Good thing I went in or I would have missed the rogue girl (leliana I think). I'm about to leave lothering now.

@syronj I'm really liking the game. At first I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out but it grew on me very quickly. I like pretty much everything about it so far.

@this isn't my name I found that one blackstone merc in lothering but I'm not exactly sure what I'm supposed to do?

One of their quests required you to deliver letter to people around the world, the first guy is in Lothering chantry. Deliver it immediatly for spoilerish reasons :whistling: Also the big guy in the cage is also a potential companion. I usually just leave him there, though.

I got the key to free the caged guy. I'll go back to chantry and deliver the blackmerc message before I leave town. Thanks for the heads up.

Definitely take Leliana and Sten (the caged Qunari) into your group. Sten will seem like a jerk for a long time, but once you gain his respect you'll find he has a complex background, plus he's a good tank. Leliana is one of my favorite characters too. Wait until you hear the conversations she has with Alistair, Morrigan, and others.

You may have noticed that when you cross certain areas with your party -- the bridge in Lothering, for example -- you trigger conversations. This will apply throughout the game, typically on bridges though I've seen it triggered on the city streets too.

I have morrigan (who is my favorite so far), leliana, and alistair in my party. Should I swap one out for sten? Can you swap party members out during battle? Also, who should I be using as a white mage because morrigan is using destruction spells and leliana is rogue. Me and alistair are warriors. I need a mage with some curing capabilities.

If I remember right, you have to swap them out before a battle. When you're doing quests in Lothering, I would temporarily swap out Leliana in favor of Sten for his greater combat capability (though Leliana becomes more effective as the game progresses, as all the NPCs do). Later in the game, you'll see the mage Wynne again (remember her from Ostagar?) and she can become the healer/support mage for you. I usually had Morrigan be the "destruction" mage, though Wynne can get a few good spells such as one that hurls a rocklike force at the enemy. Wynne also has a lot of good conversations with your character.

You'll have to decide what you want Leliana to be; right when you get her, her talents/skills are scattered so she's a little good at being a rogue, and a little good at being an archer and a little bit of a bard. I don't like how they handle bows/archery for the most part, so I focus on rogue talents for Leliana. Not so much "steal" as lockpicking, especially if I'm not playing a rogue, but concentrate on cunning and dex, give her points in the dual wielding area, get her two good daggers, and let her be.

I jsut made leliana to pick any locks, sh wasnt that good imo. Then made my character the rogue.
Sten wasnt to good imo, he is a 2h warrior, and I disliked his personalit. Keep with your current group, best interaction with eachother imo.
