Just Got Dragon Age What Can I Expect?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 8:54 am

I'm a big rpg fan especially open world rpg's like TES. What am I getting into here with dragon age? Hundreds of hours of sprawling, open world goodness? Crazy spells and dragon fights? Sweet loot and armor? Epic dungeon crawling? All feedback much appreciated.

It's rather linear. Not to open world. You go from zone to zone. Controls are awkward. And them being on "auto-pilot" cause be an issue for alot of fights. I loved it the first time through though. The ending was excellent, the gameplay was fun, and the character development was pretty sweet.

And there is no giant world map you can just go on. You're world map lets you pick where to go, and it just sends you there after "walking animations" on the map.

If you got it, why not go and try it out?

But anyway. It is very much like classic Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights games. Quite hard game for current date standards. Dragon Fights are fought on ground level and are mostly quite hard and rewarding.
Game is not open world game like Elder Scrolls, but it has great story.

Dragon Age is one of my favorite games in genre.

Respectably, you can expect one of the best rpg's you have played. Just the origins stories at the beginning are enough to of made me play that game for like 2 months. I already pre-ordered dragon age 2: ultimate edition.

Don't go into it expecting a open world, because it's pretty much the exact opposite of that. You have a map, and in order to travel to a location you have to open the map, choose a location and wait a few seconds as you "travel" across the map. The actual areas themselves aren't open either, invisible walls are everywhere, and you can't jump (which just makes it feel even more restrictive imo). The game is good, but if you go into this expecting an open world you will be very disappointed.

Hmmmm mixed comments so far. How is the magic system compared to TES? Can I equip my character with whatever armor/weapons/spells I want? Are there epoc, sprawling cities with lots of shops and npc's?

Um... the comments haven't been mixed at all. Everyone has basically said "It's a good game, but it's not open world."

Magic system is kinda better compared to TES.

You can combo spells like grease and fire to create walls of fire. But you can't make custom spells or use them as Warrior. You pick a Class and use it and it's sub-classes. So you can't really be Warrior and Mage at the same time.
But you command party of 4 characters, which means that you will have Warrior, Ranger, Healer and Mage with you if you want.

There are few nice cities around. Orzammar is quite nice looking place. Sadly the camera perspecitve is not best for good looking city views anyway. If you have played NWN or Baldurs Gate, you know.

This is not TES. This is not a Bethesda game. This is a Bioware game and falls into all of their trappings, for better or worse. There is no persistent world, just a handful of locations you go to, each of which is relevant to completing the main quest. The emphasis is on story, not exploration. There are no "epic sprawling cities" with "lots of shops and NPCs," you only get to see a small portion of the (two) cities available to you, and they only have the bare necessities. The system is class-based with many restrictions, so you can't use every type of armor/weapon/or spell on a single character. And for that matter, it's a party-based game; you don't control one lone badass hero, you control a team of characters.

I loved Dragon Age, but with the expectations you have, you're on the way to disappointment.

Should I return it and wait for two world 2 on the 25th?

Well, it can't really hurt to just try it, though if you have the PC version, the are all the usual issues that can make returning it a pain, if not outright impossible, after use. And I'm not a fan of the console version. As for Two Worlds 2, don't know much about it or its predecessor, but it sounds like it's more up your alley.

Thanks for the feedback. I got dragon age on the ps3 I don't have a good enough pc to game on.

I have Mixed feelings about the game.

It is rather linear, and combat isnt that good at all.

But character creation, character interactions, and a really fun storyline, Make the game at least worth giving a try.

Think of it as Kotor in a fantasy setting rather than Morrowind and you'll be fine. Also if you ever choose a mage, I recommend getting the Glyph of Paralyze and the Glyph of Repulsion spells. When you make them overlap it turns into a "nuke everything from orbit" explosion that paralyzes everything in like a 40 foot radius for 15 seconds. I found that out on my own just messing around one day casting glyphs everywhere, and then BOOM paralyze explosion.

Are these spells you buy? Unlock as you level? Pick at character creation?

Can someone give me some insight on the currency please. So I'm at my first shop and I see items with a silver looking gem and a bronze gem next to the item. Some even have a gold gem and some have all three. What's the deal? In my inventory I had 63 and then a bronze gem next to it. I sold a couple things and now I have 11 and a silver gem and my 63 went down to 35. I'm confused.
