Just Got Fallout

Post » Wed Feb 24, 2010 3:58 am

Well, I dwnlded FO a long time ago, but just last night I really got to playing it. It's AWESOME. Speaking as a long time Bethesda & Bioware RPGamer, this is the first time I'vre played a PCRPG, or any game this complex. Last night I did two rather quick playthroughs...The first time, going 150 days and dooming the vault, and the second, betraying the vault, and getting dipped in a vat of Super virus...But, anyway, this game is as aforementioned, AWESOME. Oh, and my second char, lucky Larry, with 10 Luck, came across dino tracks, an overturned truck with 10,000 caps, and a crashed alien spacecraft with a portrait of what looks like Elvis. Cool stuff. Oh,and a question: Does the game go on much longer with someof the other storyline playthroughs?

It can take a while if you want to do as many side quests as possible along with the entirety of the main quest (the Water chip and defeating The Master). I'd say the average play time is around twelve hours which doesn't sound like much I know, but most RPGs from the mid 90's were around that length.

You're not a long time BioWare RPG player unless you've played the Baldur's Gate series, which are also PC RPGs. :P

I just voted for a game I've only played till I created my character, left the vault, and attempted to use travel.
I thought I was voting for my opinion of Fallout 3, so sorry about that.

The length of one play through is short but Fallout is highly replayable.

Now that you finish the game the normal way you can try doing it using the non combat characters.

Try playing a character which doesn't use combat skills and put all your skill points in speech, science and barter or repair.

Try playing a thief and don't use combat skills. Put all your skill points in stealth, lockpick and barter or gambling (this last two are your choice).

Playing with these two characters is like playing a different game. Quests will be different, you will know characters better and find new locations you haven't seen before.

I voted 9, but I think FO2 has a more interesting world, and many of the aspects of 2 make it only alittle better, so I have to give it a 9 so 2 is a 10.

Well...I guess KOTOR wasn't that long ago... An' I didn't get that 'til a coupla years after it's release...Oh, you get the point!

That 1st sentence sums up my initial impression. Might try those. Creating different charries can make the game totally different. My current character has an INT of 1. I expected shorter sentences...But THAT was a little extreme!

I'll buy that sometime soon, too. What's that one like?

I always thought the sentences were the same length, cause people spoke so slowly to you ;)

2 is like 1, it didn't change much (like all good sequels) but added a more highly developed and interesting game-world and better NPC interaction, plus it was more polished and felt more complete (not including bugs). I just wish Black Isles had created a more origional atmosphere then recycling FO1s. It made all of FO1 non-linear outcomes completely linear. then made the Vault Dweller male and white by canon, which is a bummer for immersion when playing any other race in FO1. I'm not that upset though, they were just banking of FO1s succes and likely didn't have the manpower to create a new world, as only 1/3 of the developers stayed on after 1.

I rated it a 9.

It would be a 10 were it not for your inventory being all squished up in a tiny box that's hard to manuever in, the journal being supremely unhelpful, and the Radscorpions. Oh dear Thor, the Radscorpions.

Fallout is a great game, but there's been a lot of improvement as far as interface goes in the last 10+ years. That inventory system is down right rotten. Try spending 1000+ caps. Although to be fair, FO3 has a similar problem if you're hoarding ammo and then trying to sell small amounts. The tiny print size is irksome when it comes to dialogue. The turn based tactical combat just isn't as fluid as I remembered--lots of friendly fire. And try finding some of those items hidden in different locations (I actually was using a walk through to find a hunting rifle, and still couldn't find it). Then there's the corrupt save game glitches-nothing worse than losing your progress. Word to the wise, never save during combat.

Putting all of that aside, it's still a great game. And replay-ability is the key. I love using a high luck character just for the random encounters. And there's always some other way of doing things which keeps it fresh. I'm finding all sorts of things I don't remember from my first couple of play throughs.

When I first played Fallout back in 97-98 I would have rated it a 10. Replaying it in recent years I would lower the rating though. The game is full of glitches and quests tha can be easily broken. It also had that annoying 'find the spy' quest that was impossible because there was no spy. I have no idea why they couldn't have patched the game to either add the spy, or simply remove the dialogue or character.

Still one of the best RPGs ever made. Fallout, along with the original Baldur's Gate are what got me into RPGs in the first place.

@daerdevil: I've heard of that hunting rifle in Vault 15 too. I've never found one there. Its possible it is only found on some other difficulty level than what I play.

I heard you need a high perception attribute. Not that I've ever found it.

What about it? You just type 1000 if I'm not mistaken. The inventory is a bit clunky tho'.

Nupe. Fallout 1 only clocked upto 999. This and a few other reasons is why I give FO1 a 9 rather than a 10. But it wasn't so much that Fallout 1 did it wrong, just that Fallout 2 improved on the engine :)

I'd rate it a 7. Personally I find the setting not as interesting as Planescape or Forgotten Realms, story & dialogue is not very good (compared to PS:T or Baldur's Gate), graphics are okay, gameplay takes a while to get into but is fun with the groin/eye shots & critical misses make game interesting. Armor system is very interesting with the DT & DR and something similar should have been included in D&D cRPGs from the beginning, imo.

EDIT: forgot to add - the companions are simply atrocious

I gave it a sparkling 8. I have yet to play a game that I would even remotely rate with number 10, every game has had room for improvement. There are also only few games which I have given a 9 (fallout 2 included). I guess I'm a bit harsh in rating things. :P

I don't think there's ANY game which can safely be given 10 out of 10.

Fallout 1 deserves a 9.

I gave it a 3...

Honestly, I was disappointed with it. I did know it was a turn based game, and that it was isometric before I bought it, however, it just didn't work for me. I felt to connection to anything and it just seemed wrong.

Take, for example, the necropolis sewers. I can't see anything in there! Let alone work out where I'm meant to go.

I don't want to bash all of you who enjoy the game. But, honestly, the expecations I had, and what I got...

Crushing is what it is, crushing.

If you had played it back when it was released you might think different. :)

It was simply amazing at the time.

That's strange, you might want to adjust brightness and whatnot. I've never had a problem in any dark area, you are supposed to see everything just fine.

Oddly familiar experience~ I felt the same way about Fallout 3 (Especially when I realized it was impossible to play it third person.)

Yeah, but it shows its age these days with the broken quests and glitches. I can completely understand how someone who missed it on release might not 'get' it now.
