I Just Have One Question: Contoller Support For PC?

Post » Thu Apr 22, 2010 11:38 am

Topic.

Though I'd ideally prefer to use a keyboard over a gamepad, my wrists begin to ache after only about 30 minutes of playing using one. Therefore I'm pretty much forced to use a controller.

Apologies if this has already been addressed... I've looked around and have seen a lot of speculation but no confirmation....

Thanks.

I don't believe this has been confirmed but Bethesda's last few titles have had it and I don't see why they'd do it here: the game has to have gamepad support on consoles so we know the game is capable of it, and gamepad support is also required to achieve Games For Windows certification.

I don't care for it personally, but I do hope they include it

I hope so - I'm planning to have saved up enough for a PC by Skyrims release, but having never played a game using a keyboard and mouse before I'd probably like to stick to what I know :)

Options are a good thing. It's really a pity Microsoft's official Xbox 360 controller drivers are so terrible and you need to jump through hoops to use a custom driver on Windows Vista/7.

I'd imagine there are programs to bind controller functions to various keys if they don't support it. I'm not sure if there's any program out there to map that mouse to control sticks though.

The wired 360 controller should work with any Games for Windows title. The wireless one can work too, but some systems don't get along with it, it is not the game's issue. Using something like Joy to Key it is possible to map another aftermarket controller to work, but it is a real pain.

And, your right, it is difficult or impossible to map the Mouse to the Joystick on games that don't have it built in, but this game should have that map built in for use with the 360 controller Getting it to work on another controller will not be fun.

Would be nice for console users wanting to play it for PC :)

I always play console though, just me.

For games not specifically designed for that controller the default drivers show the shoulder buttons as a single axis (both buttons as a single access in one) and they cannot be mapped to button presses, which is an unfathomable decision in my opinion. It sounds like a very good option if the game supports it though. I think they should support it (just not as a primary option with neglect to the PC UI). I don't have an Xbox 360, but I like the controller as a PC USB gamepad. I use the Xbox 360 controller I have for classic games and prefer the keyboard and mouse for computer games, so perhaps I'm being unfair to Microsoft's drivers.

It's a shame the same courtesy isn't offered in the other direction, if I could use a keyboard and mouse to game on a console I'd definitely pick one up. I have the opposite problem that Theleb Ka'arna has, gamepads make my hands hurt.

Three month BUMP.

I've still not heard any definitive confirmation/denial of controller support for PC.

Have any of y'all?

Still hopeful...

I didn't see this thread and I've asked this question on the Meet The Devs thread. I love using my game controller with my PC...it's just what I got used to first. Here's what I asked.

I have a Logitech game controller hooked into a PC and it works fine with Fallout New Vegas. Will Skyrim support my game controller too? Thanks!

Great thread and I hope we hear about this!

I've tried controller on PC before for FO3 and NV and didn't like it. The aiming accuracy and movements were clunky. I recently got a Microsoft wireless desktop (KB+Mouse) and the range is super compared to my old Logitech. I can comfortably play from the couch on the big screen.

I personally am horrible with gamepad's, but can effortlessly put my mouse over a specified pixel on my screen very quickly. This would however be a cool thing, and since it has been in the last few BGS games, I bet it will be in Skyrim.

As did I.

Controller support will decide whether I buy Skyrim for my gaming PC (in production) or my PS3.

What about gaming mouses with extra buttons, etc.? I don't have one myself, but I'm thinking of getting one for Skyrim. Were they supported in Oblivion?

Absolutely. It's very handy to assign spells and actions to the extra buttons. Usually the main buttons were clickable to assign a function and the others could be made Generic and assigned to whatever keystroke you wanted like Spell# 5 - Heal.

I've always wanted to play RPG games on PC rather than console for the benefit of mods but I love laying back in my comfy bed!
I would totally hook up a computer to my TV and just plug a controller in and play like that, best of both worlds! :)

Even if a game doesn't support extra buttons by default it's easy to get around this, just set those extra buttons to keystrokes. I set up my mice with mouse-4 and mouse-5 bound to home and end, it makes it easy to navigate long websites (like forum threads and blog) and in game I'm simply binding to home and end, even though I'm using the mouse instead of the keyboard for these.

There is a program called pinnacle game profiler that allows you to use the Xbox 360 and PS3 controller for the PC,There are also Premade proflies to use,There are Offical and User made ones,That bind all keys from keyboard and mouse,Such as mouse to anolog sticks for movement,Hotkeys to D-Pad,etcI have used this for many years,And wroks very well. Yeah, I figured it would be very handy, but I didn't know if it was supported. Neat, thanks. :)

Do you know about a program called 'xpadder?'

You can map keyboard buttons to a controller. It won't really do nicely for anolouge movement but digital stuff it works great!
