Just how "terrifying" is Bleak Falls Barrow?

I don't expect it to be "terrifying".

this subject is simply way too subjective. LOL each person has a different threshold as to what scares them and what does not. it is IMPOSSIBLE to scare everyone especially in a game environment. so, threads like this really aren't productive and pretty much degrade into a flame fest. it's threads like this that are the scariest dungeons of all. LOL

Are you serious...? If so then why TES games even try to make things scary? It's obvious that it's subjective, it doesn't mean that it shouldn't be discussed. Every comment so far has been constructive and productive.

P.S: You can same the same things you have about almost every subject out there that is in some way personal or encourages you to point out your opinions and ideas.

Not a productive comment. funny however...

I remember some jumpy moments from OB. I don't know if I would say they were terrifying, but they definately made me crap my pants. Specifically, there's a troll that patrols the forest around Tidewater Cave south of Leyawiin that scared the crap out of me when I first explored the area.

I guarantee that with the improved graphics and environments that there will be some pretty creepy areas in the game. Just turn all the lights off and see how you feel, I bet even the most hard-assed gamer will jump a little at some point.

If you crap your pants for non terrifying things, what happens when you are terrified?

Even when playing dead space 2 in complete darkness all by myself it didn't affect me any. I used pee my pants when i was little, wish i could get that experience again hehe.

Anyway, i really doubt i'll get the chills from Skyrim, but if they can set a dark evil feeling in a dungeon then it'll still be a great experience. Oblivion wasn't scary just because the combat system failed, there was no challange to it.

Kinda thinking about it I remember one thing that made me nervous in Oblivion. I entered a dungeon on an early level and I explored a little bit, a troll came out of nowhere and I tried to kill it but he was too strong for me. Then I just ran outside of the dungeon but he just kept chasing after me to the ends of the earth. The chase was at night in the woods, and with how the troll is running it feels like you are being hunted. That was extremely cool.

What about adding the feeling that there's something more than you actually see? that would be cool as well.

Only game ever to really scare me was VtMB, and I really think that was mostly because of the music at certain points in the game.
Here are some examples:

Bethesda really needs some music like this for those scary moments in their games.

I was scared of a lot of Oblivion dungeons, but not in the sense you're talking about. It was more just creepy for me--I just avoided most undead dungeons because of this (I liked them though).

the music is half of it. If there is good ambient scary music and sound effects, thats enough to keep me on my toes.

I'm afraid of spiders (real ones anyway  ) but I'm pretty sure if they have that giant frost spider jump out of nowhere and surprise you, I'm going to scream like a little b***h and drop my controller.

And even if they have him approach from the front, I'm probably going to pause the game and collect myself. :shakehead:

But as for the rest of this game and Oblivion, why would we be terrified? It's a game. Nothing can hurt you. Heck, I know the spider can't hurt me, it just looks creepy! :teehee:

By scary, I'd like to feel atmospheric fear and not simply jump scares. Examples:

Dead Space and Minecraft (yes really) include jump scares, which are instanteous and not fulfilling in my experience. I want to feel actual, palpable fear and not a reflex.

Oblivion had some atmospheric fear, but I'd like there to be much more of it in Skyrim. Echo cave was unsettling; pale pass was scary. Hackdirt was terrifying.

I guess it would be relative to how easily you are terrified of things. There has only been one video game that literally gave me chills and made me feel some level of actual fear and that was alan wake.

Edit - just thought of one other time....the first time I played fallout 3 and left the vault it was dark out...that was scary, didnt know what to expect and couldnt see much.

The scariest game I've played lately is Minecraft. Honestly. A skeleton jumped out at me the other day and my heart jumped out of my chest and ripped its self in half. I honestly missed a beat and my chest hurt for a while.

Its just a game made of blocks with monsters that looked just as bad, so What makes that game scarey? You get hurt and die in that game. More often than you would like. What did it for me was I was spelunking in a cave filled with ores and I had collected quite a bit. I had run out of torches so it was very dark, I realy didnt want to die and loose all that ore I had mined. so I was extra anxious. then all of a sudden I hear a footstep behind me and just as I turned I see a skeleton right behind me out of the corner of my eye "UUUUUUURRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!" and my heart froze and keeled over.

In TES I can comfortably play for hours without dieing, and If I do die, I can just load the last quick save. And try a different aproach. But what does it for me in minecraft is you can die, and will die, and there are consequnces to dieing. as depending on where you are, you often cant get your stuff back that you had been carrying. and so I dread dieing and avoid any damae at all costs.

Thats what Skyrim needs. Consequences to your death. a REAL hardcoe mode.

Too bad I'm like Dexter, so if it's not like Doom 3 on nightmare then it's not terrifying. Well, I don't work as a blood anolysist and I don't kill people, but still. Anyways, I think it's excellent that they're finally bringing in some horror elements, because as Todd Howard said himself "we're not aiming for a rating", even though they clearly tried to avoid spookiness in Oblivion - with too much lighting in the dungeons (making torches useless) and with encounters that felt almost cartoonish rather than truly terrifying.

I did have my moments though, in Oblivion. But it was rare and only within the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves' Guild quest chains, in which stealth was crucial to success, often.

I found Ayleid ruins scary for a while. Not because of the monsters, but because of the general atmosphere of loneliness of a place that had been abandoned and empty for centuries... like a very old tomb. Took me some time to get used to that.

Im serious.

in TES, there are no consequnces to ANY of your actions. So you can play any way you like without worrying about other NPCs or your own safety. cause you can just reload a save. but in Minecraft you cant. What happens, happpens, and you cant undo any of it. Thats why I avoid ghouls/bombers at all costs, cause they destroy my work.

Fallout 3's Dunwhich building succeeded in giving players a feel of "oh, yeah, about going in there? I think not." I think they can pull it off, but won't know till November.
