Just Keep Slashing

Post » Sun Jul 04, 2010 3:13 pm

Hello, this is the second topic I have done tonight. Sorry. I made a topic similar to this one.

I asked "Will we have to slash, slash and slash like Oblivion?"

That really annoyed me!

Or "Will it be like, slash, block then finishing move?"

If it was, slash slash. I would not buy the game. Simple.

So please answer if your 1000% sure or heard news and can send me the source.

Thanks in advance!

I think it will be slash, slash, block, slash, block, slash, slash, slash, slash, block, slash, finishing move. But I'm not 1000% sure.

?
What if I'm 1000% sure that no one is 1000% sure?

To answer the OP

You know there's this thing called magic in TES games right? and Stealth? those might end up skewing your optimal slash block slash playstyle or whatever you call it.

Hopefully weapons dont do the same damage with every strike. That was the problem with oblivion.

Well, I don't know if you can generalize the information so much in that poll, but here's something I read earlier that gives a good example of how combat works, taken from http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1194192-skyrim-article-in-swedish-gaming-magazine-level/ which was taken from info from a demonstration of the game to members of the press.

Then comes a fight against a bandit and he has described it in detail: The bandit attacks Todd with a wild war cry. He strikes with his sword and Todd manages to block the attack with his shield. The enemy takes a few steps back and goes into a defensive stance. He waits for Todd to make a move, but Todd waits patiently. The bandit finally grows impatient and attacks once more. But instead of blocking, Todd this time raises his sword and buries it in the enemy’s stomach, which he has left open. The whole screen is pushed back as the weight of the dead body lands on Todd. He stumbles, but regains his footing and manages to push off the body. The bandit slides off the edge of the sword and hits the ground.

Well, in Oblivion some of my fights went slash, slash, block, slash, slash, block...some went slash, slash, slash...some went zzzap, scorch, freeze...

But I'm not 1000% sure what they'll be like in Skyrim. I can't even get close to 100%, since there's been little to no information released beyond a lot of vague marketing jargon pretty much designed to be meaningless.

So, sorry- don't know what to tell you.

Ok, no one is 1000% sure.

Well, in exaggerating terms i am 1000% sure, reason being is because i just got bored of the dull combat animations. In Oblivion it's just slash here and there and block often, i'm glad they finally added something interesting. And it doesn't really matter because if they die in one blow i wouldn't mind hacking my axe so hard into my enemy's forehead as a finishing move.

Actually, i heard you use the right anolog stick to control where and how you hit the target (thrusts, slashs to the left or right). the combat as a whole is apparently inspired by demons souls which means if you do slash slash slash, your body will fall to the floor a lifeless shell before long.

No slash slash slash.

You got it all wrong.

Slash slash slash, was Morrowind. (or sometimes stab stab stab, and chop chop chop)

And Skyrim will be like Oblivion, except better...

That actually sounds like it will be really boring combat.... Hopefully it was only typical fighting from that NPC, but if there aren't NPCs that press the attack and keep you on YOUR toes that would indicate that when they observed the martial artists to get ideas about combat, they did something VERY wrong.

From that it sounds like there would be some very repetitive, easy combat. Seeing as Skyrim is unlikely to have machine learning, it sounds like I've mastered combat in the game from just reading that paragraph. I hope to GOD that I am wrong.

In my game it went twang, twang, twang then slash, slash and BANG with bits of guts everywhere but I not 1000% sure.
Why?
Because I have a memory of a gold fish.
I cannot remember what movie I seen 10 minutes ago.

Oblivion's melee combat was as bad as Morrowinds, except you had controllable block... I found Oblivion more slash slash slash than Morrowind. In terms of ranged combat, Morrowind was actually better if you had 40 marksman and decent governing attribute.

You take it wrong also
Skyrim I hope will have directional attacks again and I hope for return of different strikes thats you describe as slash, stab and chop but now they will have larger impact like slash have bleeding effect stab armor piercing, chop equipment durability damage and armors will have different protection from such strikes also.
Not again oblivion equipment thats almost don't have differences.
Need to take best features from all previous mechanics and improve them not only from one game.
Fencing will be more interesting since different weapons again will have different strikes while different armors give different protection, so even if blunt and blades in one weapon skill they will have different properties and such properties will not magically pop up when we take perk but must be already inbuilt into weapon, perks can enhance such properties by increasing magnitude and chances.

If you slashed, slashed, slashed in Oblivion against the wrong enemy say a City Guard at low levels you will die. I think Skyrim will be fine, It'll be similar to Oblivion but different at the same time.

Haven't you made this same exact thread before?

Anyways... try this http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2011/01/24/skyrim-building-better-combat.aspx

There's really not a lot of info available yet.

Todd Howard said in an interview (don't remember which one, pardon me) you could slash in different directions, or angle (I'm not sure what he meant, something like Oblivion with different moves for each direction or something like Dark Messiah where you control left or right up and down? Well there's not that much of a difference when you think about it!)

I'm guessing there will be slash slash power attack block slash power attack finishing move.. Something like that.. Then it depends how visceral the combat feels, and how the enemy reacts to taking a beating with a mace... Hopefully better than Oblivion..

That is correct, they really liked a Mod that a player made for Bows and they made the change for Skyrim.

No one can be 1000% sure, or even 100% sure on this, to be a little more reasonable, because we haven't played the game yet, so we can only judge based on what information we've been given, and as far as said information goes, it sounds like Bethesda is trying to improve the combat system, but obviously, they're not going to tell us the combat is boring, because that doesn't make people want to play the game more, so we can't be 100% sure what the combat is like until we've played the game, though at least according to what we're told, we can at least expect something better than past games, how much better though waits to be seen.

First of all, you're*

OT: I'm thinking it'll be the latter. And also, if you hate slashing so much, you can always be a mage.
