Just rented Skyrim

Post » Wed Dec 14, 2011 11:01 pm

I just rented Skyrim after waiting forever for a copy to come in for rental.
I rented it because I'm more of a sci-fi gamer, gears of war, halo, etc. I didn't want to buy it without knowing that I'd like it first. [like when I bought Dark Void on a whim... that wasn't a good idea]

I haven't even started gameplay and the title music is like.... oh my god. It makes me want to go on an epic adventure and kick butt, but there is no butt to kick and I'm stuck at home because of snow. It's the kind of music that makes me want to just... do something epic! xD I'm definitely buying the OST.

Anyways, the thing I don't like... tiny text. VERY tiny text. Itty bitty cannot read text. Why is the text so tiny? D: Mass Effect 2 had this problem, but it was at least big enough so I could read it, but this... I can't even see what it says, and I have a large TV. Tiny text makes me sad inside.

Anyways, yep. Gonna start the game now xD Anything I should know about? I've never played any of the elder scrolls/oblivion games, so I'm what you'd call a newb/new player. Gonna kill some dragons. brb.

Explore. Then explore some more. Then take a lesson from Burger King and do it your way. Just remember to explore while you're doing that.

Just play it. It'll come along, and just enjoy the experience.

There really isn't a true "right" or "wrong" thing to do, for the most part.

Just bear in mind that a lot of common conventions of civil society apply in Skyrim, such as don't attack people at random unless they're going to attack/have attacked you, don't steal stuff or at least don't get caught stealing stuff.

Hopefully the complainers don't dogpile in here to ruin a new gamer's experience.

You can still rent games?

Do you have HD? Text among other things is unbearable in SDTV.

Do you have x-box or ps3 setup for 1080p? If not, you are only using low resolution 800x600 or something like that, for 4:3 normal TV...

P.S. If you use HDMI cable, it should default to 1080p resolution.

If the letters are just tiny, and not clear... You might want to select lower-resolution, which will make the letters larger on the screen. But I imagine you have the opposite issue. (I think the letters scale-up with resolution.)

Well, for many pc players(like me) the text is to big for our taste. Anyways, you did the right thing in renting Skyrim because the way things are going at Beth, renting is a great idea. As for playing the game, well, just play the game and wander, explore for yourself the world and if you need help just post a question at the forums. We have one of the best communities in gaming. We have got the best [censored] and whiners but in the end we like helping our TES players.

besides the itty bitty text, this game... oh my god.... this game. I'm putting it on my Christmas list. And the OST. MUST. HAVE.

I keep on getting this weird glitch though with my view.
I don't know what triggers it.
I usually play in 3rd person and sometimes the normal view will zoom in really close on my characters back so I can't really see anything around me, but when I pull my weapon out, the view zooms back to normal.
I've tried reloading saves. I've tried saving in first person, backing out to the dashboard, and restarting the save, reloading saves, going into a house and back out again, everything I can think of. Nothing is working, the only thing that works is loading a save before the glitch happened, and sometimes it's several hours of progress lost :C
Anyone know how to fix this? It is very aggravating.
I really don't want to have to re-load a save because then I'd loose my ebony sword and be back to level 14 :c

NEVERMIND. Fixed eet C:

But I totally didn't know you could explore like... everywhere o-o It took me a while to realize it and I had a happy spazz attack when I found out.
I don't like vampires... and trolls, and giants. I've been staying far far away from those.

Just play is the simple version. One thing that I wish I would have known prior to playing oblivion is this: do not try to level up specific skills (at least not until you're high level and it makes sense to) - ultimately it will make you a higher level, but not good in what you need to be good in to survive. This is because you naturally become good at the skills you need to be good to survive just by playing. In short, going out of your way to level up certain skills is not only a hassle, it can also make your character worse because the game levels up as you do - you may be able to light up a town with your illusion skill, but you'll wish you had gone adventuring and leveled up your destruction when you come across that big nasty creature trying to kill you.

When you play it ... well, you won't be the same. Be prepared to see time fly before your eyes as you find urine leaking from you at every dragon fight (eww but true, no matter how many are too embarrassed to admit it).

I wish I rented it first. I was a svcker buying this game.

I can always hope that TES 6 will be better, unfortently the way Bethesda has gone with Skyrim, it is turning out to be nothing more than a RPG arcade style game. Very stripped down and very simplistic game. They keep taking away more and more and more every TES release.

Yeah, you're gonna want at least a 32" HDTV for console gaming nowadays.

I originally played 360 games on a 27" SDTV and tried playing Dead Rising.. Need I say more?

I might be getting an 'upgrade' from my stupidly wealthy aunt and uncle xD
I've made do with this tv so far, I kind of guessed at what the text said and went with it. It was mostly on the menu though [save, options, settings, etc.] that I couldn't read, everything else is just dandy.

Kind of wish I could store these ruby/emerald dragon claws somewhere though, they don't really want to leave my inventory....
I'm a Khajiit, level 17.
I've been leveling up my sneak, lock pick, archery, and destruction.
My magic so far:
Conjure Familiar, Conjure Frost Atronach, Fast Healing, Fear, Firebolt, Flames, Frostbite, Healing, Ice Spike, Lesser Ward, Lightning Bolt, Magelight, Night eye [Khajiit], Sparks, and Transmute.
I have these shouts: Unrelenting Force [2 words], Whirlwind Sprint [2 words], Elemental Fury [1 word], and Fire Breath [1 word]
Armor: Dwarven Armor [fine]
Weapons: Ebony Sword [fine], Dwarven Bow, Orcish Greatsword of Tarpor, Honed Ancient Nord Greatsword of Burning, and Red Eagle's Bane.

Bought a house in whiterun because I was tired of carrying soooooo much stuff around. I almost always had a full inventory.

I'm going to become a werewolf, so cliche and everyone's doing it, but I think it'd be a blast xD Kind of wish they had different lycans though. Sabercat-thing for the Khajiit would be pretty awesome. Or at least some different colors, haha.
I had a "holycrap wtf is this" moment when one of the Companions turned into a werewolf.

I love this game so far, it really makes me think of Mass Effect, but with more exploration and dragons! Everything is cool with dragons.
I've only run into frost dragons though, nothing really interesting.

I hadn't played any TES games before either (just tried out Oblibion a short but that doesn't count :P) Just play it., I'm lvl 35 know and I still don't really know anything advanced about the game. And That is the great part, you don't really have to now a lot.
It's an amazing game, lots of things to do. I'd say you'll end up buying it.

If you haven't played them yet, you should also consider giving Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas a go next time you're out renting games.
Similar gameplay, but in a post apocalyptic sci-fi setting.

But yeah, first go and buy Skyrim!

Just had my first blood dragon fight... these things are brutal! Got killed within 2 minutes!
He spawned again in the same spot and I managed to defeat him by hiding behind a house support, it kept me completely safe, haha! Total new player move, I know, but I'm still too low a level to kill blood dragons easily xD

Became a werewolf too, only had to do about 3 quests for them.

Oh, I'm doing TONS of exploring. I see something, I go check it out. I ran into my first batch of spriggans that way, got killed too. But then I killed them, ha!
I haven't even gotten my third word for the unrelenting force thu'um yet, so I'm taking it slowish.

Hey, I just bought a horse.... but it keeps following me whenever I fast travel D:
Any way to keep him/her from following me when I fast travel? I really don't want my horse to be open to dragon/bandit attacks.

You don't have to worry too much about your horse( or maybe you should!) they can fight and they will fight. Horses in Skyrim are really brawlers with four legs. :hubbahubba:
Seriously, your horse will follow you whenever you fast travel. It makes it easier for you to find your horse in case you forgot which town or place you left it.

Ohhh, kay.
Haha, my horse kept a dragon busy while I shot at it, so she has her uses xD

Any way to get certain items out of my inventory? I want to get rid of this glenmoril witch head because it is really creepy and has a weight of 4, but it won't let me drop the item and the guy I was supposed to give it to died :/
