Just saw something very concerning about the game...

Post » Tue Aug 30, 2011 7:52 pm

OK, so I was just watching some footage of a guy playing at PAX.

And by footage, I of course mean the mental footage in my head that I vividly remember from being there.

But at one point, he is still close to Riverwood and Bleak Falls Barrow.

He accesses the map and moves the cursor around for a moment...

And he CLEARLY rolls over an icon for the city of SOLITUDE!

Solitude is on the entire freaking north-northwest side of Skyrim.

Why on earth is it showing an icon for Solitude on the same map window as Riverwood and Bleak Falls Barrow???

Either the in-game map likes to show basically the entire world at once, or else this game is really, really, really small...

The only, only thing that I can think of (and that I am desperately trying to convince myself of) is that maybe they have icons for some of the major cities towards the edges of the map at any given time, just to show you which general direction it is.

I really don't understand why that would happen...

Edit. Misunderstood you, thanks for PM.

Your pic looks like it is massively zoomed out, but I can see it looks like half the map is missing.

Also there is a rather big fog in-between the map making it hard to judge distance. I wouldn't worry. I doubt they would lie that it is the size of Oblivion.

So this made me confused. It is confirmed to be the same size of Oblivion. But it seems much bigger because of the mountains. Plus, they have put much more stuff into the map than Oblivion.

Well of course they arent going to give you the entire game to play at a PAX demo. They probably just gave a small area but put the cities in it for kicks.

keep in mind that the playable demo at those game shows are not the full game. they are still in beta mode. i thought i read somewhere that the area that people were playing was a made up area and not in actual skyrim. its just to give people a feel of the game and to check out its greatness.

Well, it's a 3D map on a tilt from a really high vantage point, it's fine.

It was an area designed specifically for demo purposes. No need to worry... at least I don't think so.

We already have the size of the world confirmed as being very close to OB.

Definition of Objective and Subjective

Objective is a statement that is completely unbiased. It is verifiable by looking up facts or performing mathematical calculations.

Subjective is a statement that has been colored by the character of the speaker or writer.

So in this case, the phrase "About the size of Oblivion" would be categorized as "subjective." The word "about" can mean anything, because the people giving us the information aren't tossing out any facts or figures, just subjective information.

Yes, but nobody cares about the objective truth in this case, they're concerned about the subjective feel.

Or the subjective advertising, you mean?

"Charlie's Chicken Soup is the best soup you will ever eat! It gives you superhuman strength! Buy some now!"

I know its off topic so dont reply if you think its dumb but...

If it was just a demo area not the full game is it still a part of the map because people talk about going to the town that was shown in the E3 footage (or is the town not the same?)

It was basically the full game excluding the main quest line and Dragons.

Not to mention the game world is only going to be about 16 square miles (the size of Cyrodiil in Oblivion). That's really not that big. It makes Tamriel more of a small island than a continent. If the area of Skyrim was built using realistic mountains and proper scale landscape, I'd guess the game world would have to be about 250 square miles at the bare minimum - and even then Tamriel's not a very large island. The fact is while Oblivion and Skyrim have large worlds for a video game, you can't expect anything colossal or lifelike. It will probably take 20 minutes or so to beeline from one side to the other, like with Oblivion. Maybe a little longer because of the mountain passes.
