Just Say No To Useless Perks

Post » Sun Aug 07, 2011 9:55 pm

im glad that they adopted the perks idea from fallout. however, there were lots of useless and sometimes just broken perks that didnt work properly. junk rounds, here and now, the perk that granted you 10% extra experience just to name a few.

10% extra XP is actually very usefull when you want to level faster.

But yeah, I doubt we'd see perks like that, tied to skills!

way stones each have 3 unique perks but play only activate 1 at a time ,the skill boosters and exp increases come from these ,all skill perks will be related to specific actions only so the skill point perks in fall out will not be in skyrim they will all be cyber physical effects like fatality attacks or deflection of arrows when blocking ect

Actually, Todd said those were the three basic and most common waystones. There will be others with other effects. I can fully expect some that potentially replicate the birthsigns.

Some perks are tied to skills.

On the recent game informer preview its mentioned that you can hold up choosing perks until your skills are of adequate level if you can't meet the requirements at level up.

What is useless to you, can be usefull to someone else. That is called Roll Playing. Just like most people don't pick Mercentile in TES games, it's still there for the few who do want it or want to RP with it.

I believe it has been stated several times now that all perks are under a skill, so unless there is a skill called USELESS PERKS, then there will be no Here and Now, since that wouldn't actually go under any skills.

I think what he was saying is that we won't see perks like that since perks are tied to skills.

the extra 10% perk was useless. you could rest in a bed and get the same effect while not using up a perk. here and now was trading experience for a perk which is just freaking nuts. only an idiot would do that. junk rounds was useless since you could do the exact same thing much more efficiently with the hand loader perk. sandman was only useful in the beginning after you level up a bit you can easily crit kill sleeping people without it.

@mouseking.........some people might think that here and now fits nicely in the pickpocketing skill

Perks in Skyrim aren't like perks in Fallout. Think o them like the talent points in WoW or something.

I don't think perks work the same way as in Fallout, you don't choose from a list of perks but rather a skill tree. That being said, such perks wouldn't fit under any skill.

Useless to you (and me, for Here and Now and 10% extra XP) is not useless to all. Calling someone an idiot for preferring a playstyle you don't is a bit harsh.

yes exp 10% boost will only last till you change it for a different way stone to replace the exp boost for something different like the tower birth birth stone from morrowind or the jone stone for invisibility spell (never understood why this one had a timer not like you could stay hidden while interacting with any thing) perhaps heaven , doom ,birth and way stones will allow 4 free perks at 1 time !

While both Skyrim and Fallout have skill oriented perks, I was hoping for some neutral perks as well.

There are 280 perks to choose from... Hate to say it, but I highly, HIGHLY, doubt not one of them is going to be redundantly stupid or pointless.

There will be crap... And yet I still dont really care :D

Perks in Skyrim are completely different. The Skyrim perks are for specialization, advancement in certain things that uses the skill, and abilities.

i used here and now a lot (well occasionaly at least) when im close to haveing the level i need in something but dont want to waste time hunting mole rats in the waste land (and most of the perks were not very useful to me), the 10% exp boost is one of the most useful in the entire game, helping to level fast is alot more useful then being able to silently kill someone while they sleep, a pro would just use that fancy new rifle from the top of the biggest tower in the area anyway :gun:

You don't need a perk/skill/game mechanic to role play. If a perk is useless from a technical point of view because it doesn't give you any useful advantage while playing the game (compared to other perks or generally) then it's useless. Period. Mercantile was useless because money was abundant in Oblivion. You'd have more money than you could spend after a few levels, whether you had a mercantile skill of 5 or 100. So from a gameplay perspective the skill was useless (unless you used mods like Enhanced Economy, in which case mercantile became useful again). If you wanted to play a merchant type character then you could have done so without the mercantile skill. Just like you'll now have to play an intelligent character without an intelligence attribute.

i used here and now a lot (well occasionaly at least) when im close to haveing the level i need in something but dont want to waste time hunting mole rats in the waste land (and most of the perks were not very useful to me), the 10% exp boost is one of the most useful in the entire game, helping to level fast is alot more useful then being able to silently kill someone while they sleep, a pro would just use that fancy new rifle from the top of the biggest tower in the area anyway :gun:

If your goal is to play through the game as quick as possible then yes, the perk is useful. If you play through the game slowly and if you know you'll reach the maximum level sooner or later anyway then picking this perk is equal to wasting a perk.
