Well it's completely up to you, what are your tags though?
PER is very important for Big/Small Guns and Energy Weapons.
And Fast Shot can be very destructive for elite enemies.

Well, IIRC each small gun and energy weapon require 5 AP for 1 shot, each burst weapon like assault rifles, SMG's, Tommyguns require 6 AP.
To AIM with any single shot weapons you need 6 AP.
So a lot of agility will help.

Sneak is... Well, I don't use it much but when I do it can be pretty useful.

Go to the options menu and pick always run, it should help a ton.

Anyways, it may be too late, but pick Bloody Mess. It allows you to see the classic Fallout death animations, and they are BAD ASS.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Bloody Mess. You're going to get sick of those same animations over and over - and you're going to see all of those just from playing the game.

You get sick of them popping all the time even though they look cool. I get sick of them even without the perk, when you are decent shot and have good critical chance every third kill is gonna be gory anyways. Also I feel that Bloody Mess is a waste as you can get something useful on it's behalf.

Holding shift or double click

*press F1 during the game for a quick tutorial on all the hotkeys and stuff*

The Fallout manual couldn't hurt either download: http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=file&file_id=33&sid=0f10eec65d9a3022d1dabdefb653b148

And here are some good char designs: http://user.tninet.se/~jyg699a/fallout.html#char

(don't scroll too far down - stop at "Area walkthrough" - contains major spoilers)

I've got the whole series but i've never actually sat down and played all the way through them, I always just mess around and end up quiting. Maybe I ought to bust them out and give them a run.

I just started a run at Fallout 1 myself.

I picked these -

S - 5
P - 6
E - 7
C - 3
I - 7
A - 6
L - 5

Tags - Small Guns, Speech, Repair
Traits - Good Natured, Finesse

I wanted a character who was decent with guns, but also able to access most of the dialog options.

So far I've made it to Shady Sands, got Ian to help clean out the Radscorpion Cave (without taking any damage), and have given a tail to the doctor to make antivenom. I'm still trying to figure out the controls and how to do stuff, and it is a little aggravating, to be honest. But I'll get the hang of it eventually.

One question I had - I leveled up to 2, and according to my character screen, I'm supposed to have 39 hit points now, but I only have 34 . Do I have to use a stimpak to get those extra five points? If so, I'll wait until I really need it.

You automatically heal when you travel across the world map. You should have full health by the time you reach another location if you're only down by 5 HP.

Oh, be sure to look for a certain Bridge as it contains fairly good loot and a comical easter egg if you've seen Monty Python.

For newbies I would honestly recommend tagging Speech, Small Guns and Lockpick.

Lockpick is an incredibly useful skill in both original Fallouts. There's no real substitute for it since relatively few locked objects have keys.
