[RELz] Kamikaze's Leveling System

Post » Fri Dec 31, 2010 8:43 am

Some time ago there was a discussion on this forum about alternate leveling systems and it gave me the idea to try and make my own. It turns out to be pretty similar to Daggerfall's system, but I swear I didn't set out to copy it :s I like it so far, tell me what you think of it.

Kamikaze's Leveling System

Version: 0.2
Author: Kamikaze

Description

*****************************************

This mod changes the leveling system such that upon levelup you may distribute 6 attribute points any way you like. To spend them activate the [Spend Attribute Points] misc item in your inventory. This item is only in your inventory as long as you have not spent your attribute points.

Also, skill levels cannot exceed their governing attribute's level. Although you can raise a skill above its attribute, the benefits are withheld until you raise the governing attribute accordingly. So to raise a skill to 100 you must also raise it's governing attribute to 100. Fortify/Drain/Damage effects from spells, enchantments, etc, have no effect on this.

You can edit the included .ini file to customize KLS, such as changing the number of attribute points you get at levelup.

The mod also calculates your character's maximum health retroactively based on the current Endurance level. That means fortify/drain endurance effects change your maximum health (NPCs are unaffected). You can turn it off in the .ini if you don't like this or want another mod to handle it.

You can use this mod on existing characters but be warned that it might cause some skills to be lowered until you raise their governing attributes!

If you want to be able to raise attributes and skills above 100 I strongly suggest you download Elys Uncapper (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13841), which increases the level caps for some calculations used in the game.

Installation & Load Order

*****************************************

To install first backup Data\Menus\levelup_menu.xml if it already exists, then extract all files in the Data folder.

The load order is unimportant.

If you want to level up immediately (instead of after sleeping in a bed) set bInstantLevelup in My Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Oblivion.ini to 1.

To uninstall enter the following command in the console (press ~ to bring up the console):
set KamiLeveling.update to -1
and wait for the message. After that it is safe to remove KLS. Don't forget to put your backup of levelup_menu.xml back.

*****************************************

Compatibility

*****************************************

Not compatible with other leveling mods, but it IS compatible with mods which change skills in some way (including changing the governing attributes).

*****************************************

Credits

*****************************************

I borrowed levelup_menu.xml from Realistic Leveling.

Changelog

*****************************************

0.2
- Changed when you can spend attribute points because popping up a menu during the game can cause problems with Deadly Reflex's finishing moves happening at the same time.

- Initial release.

Basically what this leveling system does is stay as close as possible to the vanilla system (which I thought was mostly fine if you're not powerleveling) while not penalizing you for your choice of major skills (which nobody liked obviously). Skills being capped by their governing attribute encourages you to raise those first, but you're not forced to. It should have been like that in the first place anyway.

Anyway I updated the mod to version 0.2 to fix an incompatibility with Deadly Reflex's finishing moves and menus popping up at the same time.
