NO KARMA SYSTEM equals bad dialogue choices

Post » Sat Feb 27, 2016 2:19 am

I can't really see the connection between the karma system and dialogue. New Vegas essentially abandoned karma (it was reduced to minimal importance as far as I can remember) and that game generally had a more nuanced selection of replies than FO3, I believe. Surely the simplistic nature of the karma system would only make dialogue worse if there was any connection. Vanilla good/bad/neutral, which I think is what Fallout 4 has moved towards.

The companion badgering is a bit like the karma system, really, but makes more sense in that you're being judged by that companion's moral code rather than some invisible judge. It's still highly annoying though.

It does not even matter in the context. This is not a question of knowledge, this is just impossible to know, you can believe in any theory or god you want, everybody has a right to believe in everything they want. But still every society has it`s cultural norms. And people always show some certain reactions to your deeds. So if you do something really horrible, you will be hated and most probably will go to jail. The Commonwealth is a society too.

I really don't think so. We say that some things are clearly right or clearly wrong...but that's not really true. There are people who don't think [censored] is wrong. There are people who don't think murder is wrong. Hitler thought that he was committing a moral act for the greater good of humanity. Some people say that abortion is absolutely immoral and they think that it should be seen as absolutely immoral by everyone. Other people think that abortion is in many cases the more moral act and they also think that everyone should see it that way.

That's a good point. I hadn't really thought about this. I think this is a much better system than the Karma system though. With Karma, they're saying "the entire world agrees that you did something bad, so you're losing Karma now." When Piper "dislikes" something, it's just telling me that she personally disliked it. I don't really find it to be particularly annoying. I like that a companion will like or dislike specific things and change their affinity toward me as a result of a specific action, rather than just defaulting to my Karma ranking to decide whether or not they'll follow me.

We were simply pointing out that you were breaking the rules by discussing religion. Moral grey areas have absolutely nothing to do with religion. I'm not sure how or why you're even trying to claim that this is the case. Morality does not equal ideology. You can discuss your views on morality without talking about how "Jesus is the way and the one true lord...etc." I haven't seen a single bit of intolerance directed toward you here. Trying to get a thread back on topic is not a violation of the rules. You're the one still discussing it, while the rest of us have moved on. I suggest you do the same before this thread gets locked.

Yeah you're right, I can't really justify any annoyance towards the system itself, it's more the irritation of my relationship with a companion I like regressing slightly over a stolen stimpak. Sometimes I'd like to turn to Piper and explain we needed to steal it because the man wanted too many caps for it and we might die without it, so stop judging me. It definitely works as a system though - it's not like companions suddenly hate you for doing small things they disagree with.

I actually miss the Karma system. Mostly because now it feels like my choices during a dialogue have ZERO impact unless I'm trying to convince an NPC to do something. They don't get pissed off if I insult them, they don't like me more if I compliment them. It's been cut down to just persuasion checks and that's all.
