[WIP] Keening, TES:III Independent Expansion [2]

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 9:24 am

Previous topic can be found here: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1341222-keening-new-massive-add-on-website/

I began work on my little project in December 2011. I hope people get some enjoyment out of it when it's finished.

CONCEPT:
"The Heart of Lorkhan has been destroyed by the Nerevarine. The Tribunal God
Vivec’s power desperately wanes. The Ministry of Truth is on the cusp of
resuming its course of destruction which will pulverize Vivec City...
and ultimately all of Vvardenfell itself. Will the Dunmer be the next to
follow in the footsteps of the Dwemer and be wiped from the face of Tamriel?
Now, you can join The Cause attempt to prevent this disaster."

- Explore a new landmass, and a new city with over 15 highly detailed buildings.

- Meet Indoril Nerevar, and help the first council drive off the Nord invasion.

- What happened to the Dwemer? Someone claims to know the answer.

- Find out why Azura has deployed her Twilight Army.

- Retake Balmora after the Sixth House completely destroys it. [FAQ: this will not change you current installation of Balmora]

- Travel to Oblivion to battle the forces of Mehrunes Dagon.

Wow, that looks incredible. You've definitely got talent. It's awesome to still see big new stuff like this coming out.

But is it lore friendly? Is your landmass in Mundus? It won't conflict with Tamriel Rebuilt, will it? 'Cause that's kind of a deal-breaker, at least for me.

Finally, a WIP thread!
Im sure you connected all the different settings nicely together.
But I cant seem to make a lot of sense of it. So many different things. But well, my lore isnt the very best either. =)

Thank you!

Lore friendly? Absolutely. I'm doing my research, and at times taking some liberties in between areas that have not been detailed, but sometimes I'm leaving it up to the player to decide to believe what is told to them or not. I decided to write Keening based of of gaps in the Lore where some interesting stories could be told, as one fan's possible version of events that transpired, and that could have transpired. I've had numerous people come forward already and seriously question the concept as being against Lore, but it's all referenced as accurate so far. Success of the Nerevarine allows Sheogorath to destroy Morrowind? Yes. Other things like the depiction of Indoril Nerevar is up for interpretation, as I've found no official declaration of his actual appearance from Bethesda. I'm welcoming questions, of course, and if anyone play-tests it and finds a problem with Lore compaibility and can find a reference from UESP Wiki or Bethesda, I want to correct it.

Tamriel Rebuilt: I does not conflict with either of the Tamriel Rebuilt betas that have been released. As of now, it may fall on top of Kragemoor when it is released, but if they finish that before I finish Keening, I can use a tool to move it further south if need be. Or, I can always create a compatibility patch. But as of now, I'm not aware of any mods that have been released that will conflict. So, I still have time to familiarize myself with how to move a landmass and to learn where the other popular landmass mods are placed.

Is it on Mundus? There are a couple of quests that take place in the Deadlands. As for whether the rest of it takes place in Mundus or not, that is a plot point that's better experienced than told.

Here's a quick video to give you a feel of what the City Interiors will be like...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8p2IuWX_AMk&feature=youtu.be

"Just a quick tour of the work-in-progress 'City Tavern' interior for Keening. I'm focusing on detail, rather than size. Tavern music, an optional .esp file that works with the 'Ambient Town Sounds' mod, and new voice acting from Casey Mongillo (you may know his work from such games as The Ship, Red Dead Redemption, Bingwood... as well as various Oblivion and Fallout voice mods). Some armor retextures and even more clutter will be added."

K, cool. I only ask because I've never seen you in the Lore forums, and I'm not interested in playing something that's completely out there. But it sounds like you've got explanations lined up for all the odd things in the trailer, so I'm looking forward to seeing what those are - and to playing this mod!

psssssst... was that http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1327177-tatterdemalion-the-lunar-province-of-secunda/page__p__19954602#entry19954602 I spied?

Finally, a WIP thread!

Thanks! I'm new to the gamesas forums, so I didn't want to be presumptuous... but the previous Keening thread had died long ago, but was recently resurrected by someone asking for updates... and then I figured out what WIP meant, hehe.

Im sure you connected all the different settings nicely together.

Thanks for the vote of confidence! Yes, I have plot points to bring you through a variety of interesting places. That is the Morrowind way.

As i've said on facebook, this tavern looks awesome! I love the smoke from the kitchen, it adds more of a busy tavern feel.

Well, I didn't know there was a Lore Forum, and I've never heard of Tatterdemalion. I'm still new around these boards. What is the Lore forum all about? Is it fan fiction and fan art and stuff?

My Lore Knowledge comes from trying to play every quest in Morrowind itself, and studying the UESP Wiki. I will be reading the novels as well. So, I'm trying to make sure anything I do that touches Lore

Oh hoo hoo? I get to introduce you to the art of Lore? Excellent.

Well, Superkitten, say hello to the http://www.gamesas.com/forum/16-elder-scrolls-lore/. We discuss everything from the longevity of races to the tangled weave of TES' myriad mythopeic relationships. Occasionally we do post our own works, in the interest of further exploring the wonderful world of Tamriel, and this we call the http://www.monkeytruth.net/main/aboutus.shtml. Hang out with us, and you'll learn a bit - but wait! There's more! Enter the http://www.imperial-library.info/! Not only do we have every text from every game all in one nice, searchable database - and sometimes with commentary - but we also have compiled http://www.imperial-library.info/content/pocket-guide-empire-and-its-environs-third-edition on http://www.imperial-library.info/content/pocket-guide-empire-and-its-environs-first-edition from http://www.imperial-library.info/content/definitive-guide-dwemer to http://www.imperial-library.info/content/guide-daedra, a http://www.imperial-library.info/storyboard/elder-scrolls/forum-scholars-guild, and http://www.imperial-library.info/content/fireside-chatsand author of the fabled 36 Lessons of Vivec - Michael Kirkbride.

The link you followed led you to one of Michael's most recent post-Morrowind works - a treatise on the Empire's Reman-era moon colony. Indeed, the Elder Scrolls http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1336585-tiber-septim%E2%80%99s-sword-meeting-with-cyrus-the-restless/page__p__20124928#entry20124928. In fact, I think you'll find that the world of Tamriel is http://www.imperial-library.info/content/obscure-texts than you knew, and in a thousand wonderful ways.

So I extend to you the invitation! Join us, in Lore and Library! And take up our shadowy secrets to secrete into your own keening stories!

/salesman. Ahem. Anyway, yeah, sorry if you knew all of that, but I got carried away with the fun of writing it. You really should take a look at the Lore forum and the Library, if you haven't. UESP is a good site for a general idea of how things lay, but it is riddled with inaccuracies and misrepresentations - the Library almost exclusively sticks to primary texts, which are much more reliable (albeit open to interpretation). And we're friendly enough, too. :)

I know of the http://www.uesp.net/wiki/File:Dwemer_parchments_copy.jpg, and then of course, the "http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Bloodmoon:The_Patchwork_Airship." I think what you saw in the trailer was a more advanced version of the Patchwork Airship. This invention is actually a key point in connecting all the various locations in the Keening Main Quest.

Stranger than you know - yes. And, in Keening, it gets a little stranger.

Stranger? Perhaps. If you can make something stranger than http://www.imperial-library.info/content/fireside-chats, I'll be seriously impressed.

But, my point was that it sounds like you've taken most of your understanding of Tamriel from the games - and there's a lot more out there to help enrich your mod.

Dinmenel - by stranger, I meant additional strange. :) I will actually be creating some new Lore, which I can build upon in additional mods. The reason for Keening having its own website and facebook page is because I like Morrowind enough to make Keening into a series of a sort.

Nice to see some of my trees put to good use, looks like a really nice mod.

Thanks! I'm definitely going to be recommending that people use your replacers along with Keening so that they can see it the way it was designed to look.

I haven't, but I will definitely be checking out some of those resources! I've taken in a few resources that I need to process... keeping track of what files I add and will later need to compile into folders for the download release could get messy if I don't come up with a good way to organize it.

Just another http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/424814_271248826285678_250637605013467_610145_1966372968_n.jpg. My implementation of Anteres's Daedric Portal.

I've been taking a break from quests to do play-testing and corrections, and just going through and streamlining what exists, adding details, adjusting lighting. The modding community has graciously offered me some modding resources, so I'll be going through those to bring them into the game. I may be expanding the landmass to properly showcase some of the new creatures.

Can you tell us some lore about Keening City please?
I don't really get how it fits in.
I guess you can tell us something without spoiling it for us. ;)

Like Morrowind itself, the Lore is open to various interpretations depending on which character you speak to, and you learn more as you actually play through it. When you meet the leader of the City, you can ask countless questions. However, as the player, you can believe it or not. There will certainly be other characters that may have other opinions about its history, same with any legends. On my side, as a writer, I know where it actually fits in within the cracks in the Bethesda Lore. Keeping with the spirit of Bethesda's topics such as the disappearance of the Dwemer and the death of Nerevar, there will be competing legends. But in the end, people with power can and have done powerful things.

When it's completed, you can get in there and start asking these questions of the characters... please be patient. I know the first instinct is to expect a mess of the Lore from a new mod, especially after so many big mods out there being poorly written. But there are three kinds of ways to approach Lore in Mods. 1. Work ONLY with what has been written by Bethesda without adding anything new. 2. Add new Lore but without going against anything that Bethesda has written, and 3. Write whatever you want. Keening would fall into Category 2, which I think a lot of mod writers are too afraid to try. In truth, every mod down to adding a simple shack to Balmora is going against Lore, since Bethesda didn't put that shack there. So, in a way, ever mod is a slight alternate telling of the original story. I make a big distinction between "going against" lore and "adding to" lore.

The Landmass has doubled. I figured, while I'm at it, the highly-detailed city should be complimented by wilderness of various sorts to round out the experience. Nothing too huge, but just enough to have a good wander and scatter some various missions, caves, and structures about.

http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/422796_273648839379010_250637605013467_616196_524989175_n.jpg of Keening's Landmass in TES CS

Also, we went into the recording studio this week with some actors to record voices for many of the new characters. City Guards, much like the royal guards in Tribunal, now have their own lines. I also can't wait to share video of Galbedir introducing herself my name.

Thanks, Architect! Thanks, Cider! Encouragement is appreciated over in my little corner as I do all this work. I'm trying to make sure it comes out as a professional piece despite it being a free job.

[REQ] I'm currently using http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=8186 for two portals in Keening. I'm looking for a resource for a Non-Daedric Portal for another scenario in Keening. Right now, I'm using the white rectangle portal from Bloodmoon, but I want to do better than that. If anyone has a suggestion for a modder's resource, or would like to create a new portal, I'd appreciate it greatly. Any ideas?
