I keep getting redirected.

Post » Thu Mar 18, 2010 5:14 am

Does anyone know of a way I can prevent being redirected to virus infected sites?
like I said avast finds nothing, nor does my other anti-virus.
it makes google impossible to use unless I copy the address instead of clicking on it.
This isn't a particular site either, its happened to me once on this site.

I've only ever been able to get redirects fixed by reformatting. I'd take it to a shop, but a month or so later it would come back and I'd have to reformat.

And man, is it just me, or are a lot of people on here getting malware, viruses, and such?

Try Malwarebytes and/or SuperAntiSpyware. Worth a shot, but it might come down to a reformat as has been said.

check your hosts file, you may have to run a search for the name on your C system drive, it should only have 1 line of stuff that doesn't start with #

http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/

http://www.malwarebytes.org/

I'd run both of those in safe mode and also clean out system restore.

If you can't go to those sites because of where it redirects you I can host them on my website for you quick, just let me know.

1. Check your hosts file (%windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts)

Clean out everything in there beyond this:

Spoiler

# Copyright © 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost

2. in the command prompt, type "ipconfig /flushdns" (without quotations)

3. Start your browser in safe mode (Firefox: there is a safe mode option in the start menu entry for it, IE there is a no add-ons option in Start->accessories->System tools)

I'd suggest scanning your system with Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware now that that is fixed. If they turn up anything, run ipconfig /flushdns again after removing all infections.
