Ken Rolston's awesome Todd impersonation

Post » Sun Jun 19, 2011 2:15 am

This guy sounds like some mad genious. :D

Kingdoms of Amalur looks quite interesting. Can you create your own character (like in TES) in it?

What??? lol bitter much? Confirmation on this please...

You can hear lots of his early insights in an http://www.imperial-library.info/content/interviews-MW-team with the then-declining Bethesda staff when they started work on Morrowind. He also made http://www.imperial-library.info/content/forum-archive-ken-rolston on the original TES forum about Morrowind's culture and the game world. Don't remember where I heard it, but I think he also wrote the main quest and the Imperial Cult/Temple questlines. Todd did the Imperial Legion, which could explain why they're all over the place in Oblivion. :P

and you know, many people aren't even going to focus on what he's saying, they'll stop at his fun poking at todd and stop right there, make up there minds and say good riddance, not realising -he was poking fun- and that the two are cool..

Glad to see Ken rear his head, I still resent him for leaving :/ wow just look at all the people who don't know who he is.....lol you guys REALLY thought Todd was the brains behind TES? pffft I hope this thread gets stickied, a nice educational reminder, that said theres no bad blood between the guys he has said in previous interviews. and also I agree about KOA Im on the fence and from what I saw, barring the graphics its not all that impressive, the sprites look like the slide on the ground and are superconnected to it like Oblivion and Morrowind, yes I know theres a mystical thing called Gravity.

Maybe not on Todds part, but Ken obviously seems a little bitter.

This. Honestly ripping down a game that looks far superior than his own is just dumb.

My guess is he didn't leave on good terms hence the not too subtle bitterness.

They're both a little excessive. I want Julian Lefay back! The real creator of the Elder Scrolls! :P

Boy do I wish people made written interviews again :/
Having a pc with no sound on it does svck sometimes.
I would be so interested in Ken Rolstons views, after all he played a major part in what I perceive to be the best game ever made.

Okay that sounds pretty cool of ken but still kingdom of Amalur looks kinda regular compare to skyrim

thats only your own oppinion. i think those game both look just as amazing. if you look at other trailers you will see that Reckoning is a game that aims to have alot of debth and they dont have the budget skyrim has. if this gamre is a success they will probably prepare a sequel and since Ken is the lead designer you can expect alot more Depth than current ES games

Then i wish him luck and who knows i'll probably end up liking his game more then TES games(not likely but plausible)

"When you kill something big, something good's gotta come out of it"

THIS is what TES Lacks.

All the loot is random, there are no overly special weapons dropped or any sense of achievement for killing any big monsters. No saying "Yay I got the Ogre slaying knife, its got a +9 against OGRES!". All you ever find is vendor trash. So killing big monsters or findign a golden casket deep at the bottom of a cave is completely pointless and never makes you feel rewarded.

Wait? Morrowind and Oblivion had special weapons...yes Oblivion overdid the random loot thing...but who said they didn't fix that problem for skyrim?

In an http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7lzDYDJT1Q#t=7m3s with our beloved Ken Rolston, he makes some remarks about the "puritan", DnD-derived RPG elements that he seeks to preserve in the project. He then goes on to make some comments about Todd Howard and Oblivion in a satirical (without malicious intent I'd hope) fashion. He even used the buzzword "visceral". Personally, not to incite any big debates, but I agree with Rolston on a lot of these points. For any TES-neophytes who don't know who Ken Rolston is, he was the lead designer for Morrowind and largely responsible for most of the game's writing - much of the game's eldritch DnD inspiration is from him. He stuck around with Bethesda through Oblivion before being a fool and leaving the best developer ever. :sadvaultboy:

Also, it is interesting to see how with KoA, they've begun adapting to a less rigid archetype system just as Bethesda is doing with Skyrim. RPG developers seem to work in trends. I wonder if they still keep in touch?

7:10 onward, if the time cue doesn't work for any of you. Maybe this should go in TES general discussion?

This a very unfortunate interview. And painful to watch.
If indeed he is talking about Todd Howard - and that is a big if - then it just degrades the whole thing down to resentful, bitter and envious counter propaganda.

Painful to watch.

Actually, I think Ken Rolston left at the perfect time. He knew the way TES was headed and wanted no parts of it.

Just my opinion, but an opinion I'm going to stand by.

Is it just me, or is he making Kingdoms of Amalur sound so much better than it actually looks? Either i'm missing something really obvious about Kingdoms of Amalur that's going to make it even more awesome than Morrowind, or he's in denial about how mediocre it's going to be,
