Monumental key binding bugs (or just horrifically poor engineering, take your pick). I know some others have touched on issues related to the inability to bind certain keys, especially the numpad keys, but I wanted to offer a more complete (and a bit tongue-in-cheek) list of what I consider particularly problematic:
- The keys available for rebinding are so incomplete that it makes me wonder why the option even exists. Having to use the Enter/Return key to confirm menu selections deserves special mention as its annoyance is truly profound.
- Rebinding movement keys (default WASD) to the arrow keys breaks construction mode (i.e. doesn't allow you to move), since the arrow keys are hard-bound to the construction menu and are on the long list of actions/keys you can't re-bind.
- Tab or Esc to close menus. No control over which. Some menus require Tab, others require Esc. It's splendidly random. Oh, and don't bother trying to rebind those keys either.
- You have to use the E key to grab stuff from a container. Items outside of containers can use another, re-bindable key. But hey, at least you can re-bind one of them. Which, of course, makes it all the less convenient when you can't use it and have to resort back to E, for no apparent reason.
- Can't bind numpad keys. Sure, they're part of most keyboards, but hey, so what?
Seriously, Bethesda... you guys made an awesome game. But what were you thinking? I mean, was the whole PC version of the game an afterthought? Did you run out of time? Or are you just sick of PC gamers and their fancy keyboards with all those confusing buttons? Oh, and don't even get me started about being left-handed!
Well, have no fear! For I come not bearing only discontent, but suggestions for how to fix your button-loathing debacle, as well: Make ALL the keys used in the game show up in the key-binds menu and let players bind those keys to any button they can mash on a standard (or non-standard, if you wanna get fancy) keyboard. Also, allow multiple actions to be bound to the same key (and I'm not talking macros here). Take, for instance, the default A key: it is used for both lock picking and for strafing left. And then, go even further: Give the same keys different functions based on some kind of state! For instance, the key used to bring up your trusty PIP Boy could also be the same key you use to exit out of it! It's a crazy idea, but I think it could work!
TL;DR - The wonky and unworkable (especially for lefties) key binds destroy game immersion and can outright BREAK construction mode. Please fix.
