Keybinding Issues (bugs?)

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 4:21 pm

Monumental key binding bugs (or just horrifically poor engineering, take your pick). I know some others have touched on issues related to the inability to bind certain keys, especially the numpad keys, but I wanted to offer a more complete (and a bit tongue-in-cheek) list of what I consider particularly problematic:

- The keys available for rebinding are so incomplete that it makes me wonder why the option even exists. Having to use the Enter/Return key to confirm menu selections deserves special mention as its annoyance is truly profound.

- Rebinding movement keys (default WASD) to the arrow keys breaks construction mode (i.e. doesn't allow you to move), since the arrow keys are hard-bound to the construction menu and are on the long list of actions/keys you can't re-bind.

- Tab or Esc to close menus. No control over which. Some menus require Tab, others require Esc. It's splendidly random. Oh, and don't bother trying to rebind those keys either.

- You have to use the E key to grab stuff from a container. Items outside of containers can use another, re-bindable key. But hey, at least you can re-bind one of them. Which, of course, makes it all the less convenient when you can't use it and have to resort back to E, for no apparent reason.

- Can't bind numpad keys. Sure, they're part of most keyboards, but hey, so what?

Seriously, Bethesda... you guys made an awesome game. But what were you thinking? I mean, was the whole PC version of the game an afterthought? Did you run out of time? Or are you just sick of PC gamers and their fancy keyboards with all those confusing buttons? Oh, and don't even get me started about being left-handed!

Well, have no fear! For I come not bearing only discontent, but suggestions for how to fix your button-loathing debacle, as well: Make ALL the keys used in the game show up in the key-binds menu and let players bind those keys to any button they can mash on a standard (or non-standard, if you wanna get fancy) keyboard. Also, allow multiple actions to be bound to the same key (and I'm not talking macros here). Take, for instance, the default A key: it is used for both lock picking and for strafing left. And then, go even further: Give the same keys different functions based on some kind of state! For instance, the key used to bring up your trusty PIP Boy could also be the same key you use to exit out of it! It's a crazy idea, but I think it could work!

TL;DR - The wonky and unworkable (especially for lefties) key binds destroy game immersion and can outright BREAK construction mode. Please fix.

Exactly!

And please let us know some feedback on this, before we start looking at refunds.

Yeah!~ heard you loud and clear Bratha!(sista?) I can't stand NOT being able to map keys... it's pain in the &$%#!~

I hate to discribe an high art piece(yet, still a canvas as the moding tool is on it's way) such as this one as "Console port" but when the graphic system is looking somewhat Arkham like(alot better... but still not optomal) and bugs that are PC only, and worse of all, key bind locks! and lack of PC interface, and PC bound options... It's looking alot like PC Verssion was jsut a tag along project... instead of being the PRIME MARKETING TARGET... I will comeback to this game when it's ready.. right now... it's unplayable (just like RAGE) to me.... I am going back to Vegas for a while (finishing it up.. DAMN Dead money is hard!)

+1 for fixing the keybindings. Please make them fully mappable.

Playing using EDSF is a nightmare!

reading other posts just reminded me, they did this with skyrim, as well. which means it's not an oversight -- it's a deliberate statement about their priorities: namely, the PC gaming platform is no longer their focus.

This is obiously a game not/never meant to be on PC... The numerus configurations/hard/software etc...
They(Betsheda) only wanted to make something, that somewhat and basicly works with a Xbox/PS4 controller...
"Well what the heck, let them/us(PC community) try it out and in the process let them do most the work as volentery moders/patchers...as before, like Skyrim..."...
They did a crossower porting but forgot one smal thing..."once again" :P PC players are still deemed to have keyboards, mouse...etc...

A working keyboard reconfiguration system?... Well, someone problebly said...
- "There is NO need to provide those pestering PC player anything "extra"...configuration options...etc...
- "We alredy have an solid/potesionale marketbase, within the console nitch"...
- "Nah that's NOT that important, they (PC players) can always buy an usb gamepad and learn to adapt!.."

I have an usb Xbox gamepad and HATE just about everything being forced to use it!!!
17 hours into the game(regarding saveclock) I have lost most of the combats (24/7) and 1-15 times over and over again...
Just becuse of the freaking gamepad... MOST of all becuse the aming with a gamepad is [censored]... to much left/right/upp/down...etc...
A game that allows you play a somewhat FPS, a mouse gives you so much more feeling/precission, just to aim... And AIM IS an essentonal bit of most FPS combat :P

Just, take a look on the standard keybord....
WASD, are as far from the mouse as you can get... and in general nather natural or confy... Atleast not for me...
Most keybords HAVE an numeric keypad on the right side, atleast my Logitech G15 has it...
And for me it's natural and even into my bonemarrow to reanssing W(forward) for keypad5, S(back) to keypad2... spacebar(jump) to keypad0, CTRL(sneak) to keypad, or Aktivate/Use from E to keypadEnter...
But as usual Betheda's staff ignore their coustemers... They had a storm of "[censored]" 5 years ago or so...when they relased Skyrim without a propper keyreassignment...
They even had to make a patch for it...month latter!!!

WHY don't THEY learn/addapt to us/the coustemers WHO acctuly are stupid enuff to buy their products and in the end acctuly pay their bills/salary's...

Do they even have some forms of alfa/beta test's!!! Do they even brows the webb, look at the postings/critics or talk to acctual gamers, regardless of system's???
As for this FAILURE!!! It was seen and criticised 5 years ago!... But obviously Betsheda learnt nothing and the same "[censored]"/shortcomming occured AGAIN!!!
Once again, as in Skyrim but FIVE yeats ago??? Didn't you/Besheda learn ANYTHING!!!!

Moding community's aside, but WHY do I need a 3part program/and program/run, just to reconfigure something so basic as an keybord with a numeric tablet???
