I'm posting this to add my voice to the objections raised concerning broken keymapping. And, yes, if any keys are "reserved" then the keymapping is broken and someone will inevitably be disadvantaged because we're all different.

Just to give people an idea of how varied and diverse optimum keybindings can be, the key bindings I find best are as follows:

Forward: Up Arrow
Back: Down Arrow
Left Strafe: Left Arrow
Right Strafe: Right Arrow
POV (hovercam): Right CTRL
Sprint: Right Shift
Walk/Run: \ OR KeyPad ./KeyPad Del
PipBoy/Journal: Backspace
Crouch: Delete
Jump: Insert
Activate/Pickup: End
Browse Container/Take all: Home
Ascend(VTOL - other games)/Prone (other games): PageDown
Descend(VTOL - other games)/AutoMove: PageUp
Hotkeys: KeyPad Numbers 1-9 (using NumLock to select mode)
Menu Navigation: KeyPad Arrows (using NumLock to select mode)
PowerAttack/Hold Breath: KeyPad 0/KeyPad Insert
VATS/Special Actions: KeyPad Enter, KeyPad +, KeyPad -

I really don't like having to use third party software to override "reserved" keymapping because Windows is already unstable enough as it is without complicating matters further.

I hope to see this fixed properly.

I've bought all TES/Fallout games on day one since Morrowind, fortunately I didn't this time... Too many disappointments in recent years about games on release...
So I don't have the game yet, but adding my voice : waiting for the key binding to be fully unlocked and fixed before even thinking to buy the game.

I don't think we'll get a patch anytime soon, and the silence from Bethesda is absolutely disgusting.

This game goes back to Steam tomorrow.

I will never buy a game from Bethesda again, because of their poor customer support, or shall I say no customer support.

I know you're upset about how this whole keybinding thing has gone, but once you get past the controls the game is really good and fun to play. If you want, you can hit me up in my http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1544976-auto-hotkey-script-for-numberpad-users/#entry24474288 and let me know what keybinds you want, and I can give you the script commands to make it work.

I hate to see people give up on the game over stuff like this. The beauty of PC gaming is that we can customize things to our needs one way or another.

Extremely nice of you, thank you.

If I decide to hang onto it, and do go with auto hotkey, and need help, you will be the first I ask.

Thanks again, but still not sure what I'm going to do at this time.

A brief statement from Bethesda, could of swayed me, but the silence makes me hesitant.

Well into the breach once more then...So the fact that Azery keyboards, lefties, handicapped are unable to play this game fluidly if at all IS A BUG or at the very least a BIG conception error. And thus merits that it does not become "closed" or ignored by Beth. So bumpity bump.

If BGS doesn't address this, then:

The good news: lots of great mods for Skyrim that deal directly with keyboard and input.

The bad news: first we have to wait for the editor (months), then the script extender (months more), then the relevant script extender functions (possibly months more) and then a modder to actually make it (months or years more).

All threads get closed at or around 200 posts across all Bethesda forums. Don't interpret the closing of the first thread as a cover-up or a dismissal by Bethesda, it's just the forum management policy. Active threads get closed once they reach 7 or 8 pages, but if the topic merits further discussion, the forum moderators have no problem with a #2 thread being started. They encourage it, in fact.

Those two bug-report threads on the front page right now are anomalies--I've never seen any Bethesda forum threads go so far over 200 posts in my seven years hanging around here.

Bumping for the sake of bumping gets the post-count closer to being closed, but at least it keeps the thread active on the front page of the forum where it is more likely to be seen.

When something is as serious as this, prevents so many people from playing fluidly a game they bought. The LEAST moderators can do is to let 1 of the those threads alive (as that's possible) so 1. it stays near the front of the queu if the community feels it should (franckly pinning it, seeing how many of these threads where started in the first place would be a better thing) and 2. leaving it open until it's actually acknowledged and worked upon.

Closing this thread or any other where people spend the time to either bump for 1 reason or another will just create multiple threads about the same thing over and over again, minimizing the fact that a lot of people aren't happy about that thing. Minimizing somehting to be able to ignore it only wortks if the community let's it. As part of this community I am not letting it, neither am I alone nor the most vocal nor patient for that matter *shrugs*

If you held out on buying or bought and got a refund over this, there is more good news... By the time its fixed, the game will be under $20 and include all the DLC.

As much as I love to support PC publishers and wish I could be playing the game right now, I'm glad I voted with my wallet.

I have to totally agree with you there Lefty, the game itself as like many of Beths titles is in fact really very good and I'm enjoying it even though begrudgingly having to be forced to use such a clusterfork of a control system and UI. Honestly, this would of been in my top games list if it wasn't for the controls and UI issues. This is why I'm so pissed off about it, they've turned what could of been the best title they've released to date into a frustrating half baked one.

To be honest, I would of waited an extra month or 2 for the PC release if that meant them getting it right for the PC release on day one and not just rushing it out and shoehorning the console control and UI system in, and for God sake Bethesda a little PR goes a long way. Can we please get some feedback from you guys. The community spend their time giving you tons of feedback and suggestions on these forums to make your products the best they can be, we are essentially proxy play testers. The least you could do is return the courtesy.

Bethesda have updated their blog page

"Our process for updating the game will include releasing a beta patch on Steam, followed by full release on PC, then release on the consoles. This process has worked well for us in the past and allows us to get more fixes out faster. Expect to see more updates, that are smaller and more frequent, than a few big ones. This allows us to make sure each fix is working right, as any change can have unintentional side effects in a game this huge. We expect the first beta patch to be up next week."

No idea what its going to address though.

AHK, for unknown reasons, breaks VATS for me (and doesn't solve other issues like the everything buttons, NPCs walking out of quest conversations, settlement stat bugs, quest bugs).

I can't get a refund because I bought from GMG (at a discount, at least).

I guess if I didn't care about quests, the plot, or settlements I might still be playing.

It's just after Skyrim I don't expect gamesas to fix anything that matters, it will probably be after the CK and the modders. I've been following that conversation and it looks like the UI coding is scattered 20 different places and changes aren't behaving as expected. It sounds like even if they fix it, every different keybind set will require changes in all those files.

I *paid* for the game, I don't want to have to *write* it, too.

Does anyone know if the AHK fix will interfere with proper usage of the Steam overlay? Like typing out gibberish because all your keys are remapped?

Depends what keys you've remapped. I'm only mapping the locked-out numpad keys, so that doesn't impact my typing. You can put in a code to pause the script, to allow typing if you've remapped any letter keys. You can find details in iFailed's http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1546356-workaround-for-hard-bound-keys-autohotkey-tutorial/?hl=%20tutorial.

Basically, you could map the Pause key to suspend and restart your script with the following line:

Pause::Suspend, Toggle

Always on the ball with the info there Abs. Nice work . Well this is at least some good news, at least they have made an effort to say they are working on patches and using steam as a platform for this which imho is always a good thing. I love Steams update service even if others disagree. It's nice they are using the PC platform to "test" their updates out on. Let's just hope they reward the PC community with helping them "test" their updates and rewarding us by prioritising some of the PC issues first eg. keybindings =D

Can't help test patches if we can't play the game Beth!

Some people step into the pod because that's what the Overseer told them to do.

And some people will stop and ask why.

i started the original thread about this because, yes, other than implementing 3rd party software, the game was unplayable for me.

I am by no means a game programmer but I am a programmer and hard coding [censored] is bad...usually. Something like key binding should never be hard coded to anything. Stuff can change and then your SOL without a patch. I really think this was just a 'we don't care cause consoles' decision. I think they'd rather us all use a 360 controller on the PC than mouse/keyboard.

the whole thing is a mess. I bet many WASD users are also kind of in a WTF bethesda, because it is all inconstant across different UIs in the game.

I WOULD LOVE to be able to just go into the game's menu and rebind to what I need..sadly, I suspect that WILL NOT HAPPEN and I will continue to have to use my auto hot key script. There is no excuse in this day and age to not have full key binding menus. So what if there is A LOT of things there...there are games out there with pretty damn complex control schemes that allow you fully rebind everything. FO4 is not that complex, not even close.

Laziness pure and simple. They really only thought of western users of the right handed variety that use QWERTY keyboards. Rohugh must be one of them.
