keypad binding....RAGE!

Post » Thu Nov 26, 2015 8:44 am

You know, it's a shame I saved money buying from GMG, because no refunds after activation. So, never again on that front.

I realized I'm working and not playing, trying to clean up after lazy devs. Did that for months with Skyrim, not this time. I'm done. Money down the drain, better things to do with my time.

Just asked for a refund. I'll pick up the game again when and if they fix the keybinding issue.

With regards to Steam being a PC platform I'm surprised they don't demand that games have the functionality that PC players expect.

Just looking to see if there is any patch or response.

It seems not.

I guess they don't work on the weekends. Why would they have to when they already made millions selling a product to people who can't even use that product.

Anyone want to buy a new game from me? Only $59.99. I can't promise it will work, but maybe someday it will. Send me your money now, and we'll worry about that later.

Leftie here too. Shelving the game until i can play without getting frustrated by this hardcoded mess of a interface.

I can't take a refund but hey Bethesda, you can forget any season pass money from me until it's fixed (and it better be a good fix).

I play with QWES for movement, A special, D interact/use.

I can mostly work with the stupid hardcoded bindings except for two places: moving around in areas crowded with containers/bodies, and the construction system.

Picking up stuff in the open works with D... but wants me to use E with containers. Strafing right while passing by a container? You stop strafing right. A body? You pick up and drag the body, slowing you down and giving you a meat shield you can't shoot through. Putting that body down again? D key.

In the construction system, Q and E are hardbound. I'm not sure what Q does, but E selects an item in the build UI (or in the world), so I can't strafe there either.

I'd go back to defaults but I am so, SO used to QWES that I would regularly find myself getting frustrated when an attempt to strafe didn't work... because I was hitting the wrong key. Nevermind that I don't find WASD comfortable for prolonged use.

Feedback submitted. I'm still playing but I'd really love to have this crap fixed. (I'd much rather it worked right on launch.)

I'd like to add my voice to those concerned about the keybinding system. Please, Bethesda, please don't let a great game be ruined by an atrocious control system.

We all have number keys across our keyboards, you don't need to reserve the Numeric Keypad, as well.

Also, letting us rebind a key that has several functions - only one of which actually remaps - isn't sufficient.

Again, please, for the sake of the game you worked so hard on, please don't stop short on the controls. Not all of us can use controllers. Not all of us can use traditional keys or even keyboards. We truly want to enjoy your hard work, as well. The ability to freely remap keys is critical to that enjoyment.

Thank you for taking the time to read.

A week after release and still no word from Bethesda that they even regard this as a problem. I very much doubt that we'll ever see a fix.

Shoddy, shoddy, shoddy.

Having wasted $100 and a frustrating 9 hours of gameplay on this piece of junk, I can honestly say that is the last time I ever buy a game on release, or based on professional reviews.

Whereas Bethesda used to be associated with quality gaming in my mind, their brand is now indelibly corrupted, so I doubt that I will ever purchase another of their games, irrespective of how good the reviews are. Fool me once and all that.

It's a shame they do not put more effort in, it almost feels like they know the modders will clean up after them so they dial back on effort.

I still hit the wrong key sometimes leaving settlement building for example or crafting. Modern game UI design has take you back a menu and eventually all the way out of menus completely. I'm OK with that being tab except the exceptions like err settlement design or crafting which I think is . There is another that escapes me. It just breaks muscle memory, which in turns makes simple repetitive tasks tiring and irritating because you have to actually think.

But yes I'm finding the game really good but the weird key choices are really frustrating as hell.

Apart from allowing keybinding please make it so (or , your call) always takes you back a menu and eventually puts you 'back in the world'.

I just want to add this; Bethesda, when you do fix the keybinding, PLEASE put the controlmap file somewhere where we can access it! In Skyrim it was buried in one of the archives, but at least it was a text file that could be edited. In Fallout 4 it's much worse, since it seems to be integrated into the engine or otherwise coded into an inaccessible place. WHY????

Going on 8 days now, and still no response, update, or news from Bethesda, on anything.

Very unprofessional.

This may be the first time I've seen a gaming company, hide from it's customers for this long after a release.

Let's see, a press blackout until about 18 hours before release, then silence after release.

Hmmmmm

Yeah, I feel DISCRIMINATED as a left-handed person. Was there a no-leftys-policy at beta-testing on PC?

And it's a shame no one from the developing company reacts to this very jusitfied criticism and tell's people when it gets fixed.

Skyrim came out in 2011 and they didn't fix the keybinding on that yet. I'm sure you'll be hearing something any second. lol

it felt less like an issue in Skyrim though and maybe the outcry wasn't as big as with Fallout 4. I feel for my left handed compatriots who couldn't get refunded though :S

I'll probably spend this money on XCOM 2 instead.

It wasn't as big an issue in Skyrim because the controlmap file was accessible, so we could fix it ourselves. There was a mod for it within a few days of the game's release. This time they've made it impossible to mod, so we have to resort to a third-party program in order to use our preferred key-mapping layout.

In Skyrim, the controlmap.txt file was in one of the BSA files (Interface.bsa?). With that file, you could remap ALL the controls, drop it into the right path in your data folder, and it was all good. There is an extractor for the new BS2 archive file format used in Fallout 4, but nobody has found a file within any of the archive files with the control mapping. It seems to be buried in the engine itself, or somewhere else that isn't typically accessible by modders. I don't know why they would do that, but there it is. If we're lucky, some enterprising soul will discover exactly where they hid it.

Maybe when the GECK comes out something will come to light, but for now, there doesn't seem to be a way to mod it.

Well since I'm out of solutions, I was starting to give auto hotkey some serious thought.

Then I realized, why should I spend the time working around this issue, when there are so many other issues, and not a single word from Bethesda in almost 9 days now, whether they are working on them or not. Seems like it will be roadblock after roadblock even if I get auto hotkey going, with zero concern or communication from Bethesda.

If they don't even care, it's probably not worth the effort.

They mapped R to Reload and Transfer of inventory and will not let me change it to Number Pad 1, get reserved key massage, also cannot map Jump to NP0. NP0 uses a Stimpack in game, like a quick use key. There is to much going on and time spent using the pipboy, was annoying in last game. WASD keys are locked to Lockpick, so I cant use arrow keys to Lockpick? WTF Please fix the mapping issues for us Southpaws! :)

Same thing for using the arrow keys on the keyboard and then trying to build items in workshop builder in a settlement, the arrow keys are used the navigate the build menus, which means there is no way to move around while in build mode. Give me options to customize all the keys. I want to move with the arrow keys, and use some other keys to navigate the workshop builder items.

Same thing for conversations, don't use the arrow keys for conversation, I'm using them for movement.

When I reviewed the game on Steam and Metacritic, I started out like this:

"If you are left handed, or don't use the WASD keys, or have any intention of changing the default keys to ones that you prefer, DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, BUY THIS GAME!

Many keys are "locked", meaning that if you have a particular preference for play (especially if you are left handed and use the number pad for movement), you'll find yourself struggling with an ergonomic disaster. I spent several hours trying to get the whole WASD thing happening, but in the end, trying to override decades of habit was a pointless, futile exercise."

For those who are interested, you can read my full review of the game on Steam here:

If you haven't already, I'd suggest that you add your own reviews into the mix.

From my understanding the Fallout 4 PC control scheme consists of various control schemes that are plugged together rather inconsistant. A mix from console commands, rebound to work (haha) on PC, the dialogue sytem and the building system. They are all different and have been put together in a very insufficient and horrible way. That′s why they are not editable, not in one file, hardcoded in the modules themselves and encrypted.

Great going there Bethesda. This time you really [censored] it up beyond recognition. I don′t think there will be a fix for that, neither from Bethesda (as they just don′t care about the crap they produced -> Skyrim) nor the modders (as it seems there is no central file for the control scheme but only encrypted fragments in modules that are not accessible).

The effort needed to make this mess editable and working is just insane and you have to keep in mind that you simply can′t edit a single file to your likings or needs (in case of lefties) and have a go afterwards. This time it simply doesn′t work that way as the structure (haha) of the control mechanisms is all over the place in various files AND encrypted and the source files needed to be edited and recompiled for it to work. This is hardly something a normal PC gamer is able to do. Period.

Bethesda just officially gave us the middle finger and I will do so to Bethesda from now on aswell. Never again.
