keypad binding....RAGE!

Post » Thu Nov 26, 2015 11:04 pm

@Bezbox is correct. However, I decided not to let me getting dragged down by this, and found a temporary solution with my 16 button Razor. I'm very bothered by the fact there is a ControlMap.txt they've encrypted to reasons I completely can't comprehent? Why place this ControlMap.txt in there and then encrypt it? It honestly feels like a banana tied to a rope that they hold in front of our faces, and move forward with us. Then why place that ControlMap.txt there in the first place?

All the key bindings are coded inside the .swf files(flash), so right now there is no quick fix possible, unless someone trys to hack the CM.txt with a hexeditor.

Hello, I came to the forums to read what people were saying about this, this is the only issue i have with the game atm.

Left handed here too and always use arrows+numpad, and yeah, slightly dissapointed with the fact we can't rebind the numpad keys, altough, unlike some ppl here said,we CAN use the arrow keys for movement.

Still I don't see this as serious enough to ask for a refund?!? and all the rage going on here, really ppl? Get a grip, I know mods aren't suposed to fix stuff games should have natively, but this will surely be fixed in the next few days by mods/file tweaks, and almost sure in the first patch...

Get a grip ppl, go play and enjoy the game, having to press a few keys we aren't used isn't that big of a deal when playing a game we been waiting for YEARS to come, and wich is looking very promising and enjoyable.

Got a steam refund.

Might come back if all the nonsense gets sorted out.

There is a temporary solution. I've only been working with it for about 10 minutes but it's promising. Thanks to user "treefidi" for his post. There's a program called GlovePIE which allows you to remap keys and works well with Fallout 4. Google it, you'll find it. It's not exactly dead simple to set up but if I can figure it out in 1 minute, so can you. I am able to use my keypad as usual . I can even map "E" to keypad-enter so that both Enter and E functionality work the way I want.

One issue so far... there's a really subtle little click each time I press one of the remapped keys. Haven't found a way around that as the game is generating that sound. If anyone finds a way around that, please post it.

Until an official fix comes out, this is a good enough solution for me.

how can I play the game when I can't use the keyboard in a usable layout by being able to do something that games have allowed us to do since forever? not even using different keys, it not having to place my hand in an odd place or at an odd angle to play the damn thing.

Just set up GlovePIE and it works great...
1. You can use the GUI tab to detect your desired output "spacebar" by pressing the key..

2. Then do the same thing for your desired input "num 0"..

3. Then press the apply button and it will write the script for you

4. then run the script and you are off and running... or in my case jumping :)

I was shocked. Keybinds are all over the place. I understand that the game has to support consoles but it is no excuse for some of the atrocious bindings and the fact that you cant rebind much at all. My pet peeves are followed by to scrap something in settelement building .... completely different ends of the keyboard.

Menus in general, some times you use to back out of a memu sometimes on a a crafting table you use followed by .

Im absolutely staggered that the binds could be so clunky, allowances can be made for the shared controller UI but not for the completely rediculous binds that can not be changed. Staggering.

Ditto with all of the above.

I use ESDF instead of WASD for movement, always have. However, even after setting W as activate, it still searches items such as bodies with E. I've also noticed that it interferes with the buttons for building, though I can use the arrows for that.

I hope Bethesda provides full support for key bindings in the near future.

I tried to play with the WASD keys, instead of the ESDF that fit the natural placement of my hands for touch typing, but found that the game was just terrible and that undoing years of habit wasn't going to happen.

I submitted a refund request via Steam and feedback via: http://help.bethesda.net/app/fallout_feedback

Frankly, there are far better things that I can spend 100 dollars on than this unplayable mess.

I went ahead and set up a tutorial for people who are either unfamiliar with using AHK or want a list of the hardbound key functions: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1546356-workaround-for-hard-bound-keys-autohotkey-tutorial/

I think it's a superior option to GlovePie because you can write other scripts too, such as toggling the program off and on again.

Thank god for Steam refunds, no message like a "I demand my money back" message to kick the developers butt into shape.

But I think best option of all is to make our voices heard and get Bethesda to implement robust and fully functioning key mapping support into the source code.

Personally, I'm not looking for a kludge at this point, rather I'm looking for a real fix.

please for the sake of everything decent, allow us to properly bind keys - we had games that allowed this in the '80s, i'd like to think we'd progressed since then

'reserved' - reserved for what? is someone going to swing by my home later and claim it? or is it because it was just too plain hard to separate the PC and console versions?

in every WASD game since the history of WASD games, i have used Q for jump and E for crouch, with Space being my interaction key. with Fallout 4 i find myself doing ridiculous stuff like picking up junk instead of standing up from a crouch. and the number of times i've instinctively opened VATS instead of leaping over an obstacle is many. (i don't use VATS and never will, so why do i have to give up my keyboard to it?)

please - give us proper keybinding, Bethesda. you know, just like every other soft co does. maybe you could ask them for pointers if you can't figure it out yourself.

I also have this problem. Sadly, Bethesda never released a keymap patch for Skyrim, so it only makes sense that they ignored left-handed mouse users this time, too. I've been playing with the numeric keypad for movement for decades (since the original Unreal came out). Morrowind and Oblivion never reserved keys, but then they decided to force key bindings on us in Skyrim. This was a slap in the face to all PC users, and I'm not surprised they did it again. This is lazy programming at its worst, and I'm shocked they'd do this again with such a beloved series. Whoever is responsible for this fiasco should be fired immediately, and never allowed to work in game programming again.

However, I just gave in and bought a Razer Tartarus Chroma controller (quite expensive). A notebook keypad doesn't work - even with a keyboard, it still maps the keypad functions to the normal key values, so it still fails to get around the stupid reserved mal-functionality. The saddest part is that Best Buy only sells right-handed Tartarus Chromas, so I have to use an extra wrist-rest to avoid screwing up my wrist. Now, I can go back and play Skyrim after I finish this game. But I had to shell out big money for this. I wish there was someone I could sue for this. This is like Blizzard telling us gamers how we should have fun - it's not up to them, and neither is telling us what keys we have to use. My Fallout 4 gaming experience is ruined every few minutes because I have to take my hand off the Tartarus Chroma, hit some key on the main keyboard, and then try to get situated on the Tartarus Chroma again. It breaks the immersion completely, and that's not fun, period. Add in some major clipping bugs, and some user-unfriendly interface problems (can't we separate the enter/exit function from grabbing objects?), and this game just isn't fun. I don't want a refund, I want to be able to map my entire keyboard, including the freaking numeric keypad. Answer me honestly, how hard is it to cut and paste the keymap code from Oblivion into a new game? Seriously, how difficult is it to cut and paste, people? Keypad 1 is NOT the same keyboard code as number 1, and you should know this - there should never have been this issue in the first place. Bethesda should be ashamed of itself.

What we are experiencing with the keyboard seems indicative of Bethesda's approach to the game as a whole: Near enough is good enough.

This issue isn't accidental, or an oversight.

It's not a bug. It's a feature.

Bethesda has to have known that this was going to be a problem but figured that with enough hype and marketing, the game's many imperfections would be ignored and we'd be happy with whatever clunky workarounds happened to eventuate.

Frankly, I'll be stunned if they bother with a fix and I certainly won't be buying their next game until I know damned well that it isn't similarly buggy.

When do you think they will realize that not everybody in the world is using a QWERTY keyboard...

I have an AZERTY keyboard and after remapping up and left to be able to move around I loose them in terminal, workbenches and other in game menu. There not even remapped in their original values, they just disappeared...

I agree with that. Just a complete menu navigation mess. The game is good, I won't take anything away from Bethesda there, but the key binding issue and the menu navigation really cripples it.

I'm in total agreement. Someone said that Bethesda development doesn't read the forum which is why I've submitted a ticket and feedback as well. I really hope this mess is addressed soon.

Hey, you and me both. There is no better solution than proper in-game functionality. However, I'm glad that there is actually SOMETHING that will allow me to play the game until that happens.

It's unfortunate that after all the waiting they could not have done the job right the first time.

That controlmap issue is RRRAAAAAAGE! inducing for lefties... I tried to circumvent this by using a gamepad (non xbox) but it won't even register with the game.

Together with that dreadful audio bug (AphexTwin Edition, and yes I applied the betapatch and newest drivers) it made me apply for a refund via Steam (refund came in as I typed this).

Everyting set to low/off, windowed, yet the character maneuvres like a pregnant manatee on land @ 19 - 30 fps.

I might buy it again if those issues are ever resolved by you, Bethesda, not by modders...

So long and thx for the .8 hrs of game i managed to sit through since release.
