keypad binding....RAGE!

Post » Thu Nov 26, 2015 10:23 pm

Why can't I bind controls to the keypad on the keyboard!!!

why are they all reserved!! I'm left handed and use the mouse with my left hand and every other game lets me bind to the keypad, even FO3/FO3:NV but not FO4!?!

I can't even play the game...

Oh no, really? DAMN IT!!!

There was a mod to fix this released pretty quickly for Skyrim, but the config file had to be dug out from one of the game archives. The fact that the data format has changed for Fallout 4 might slow it down a bit.

[censored]. There goes my plan to get into the game a little bit tonight after it unlocks. :(

In the short term, we might have to look into a third-party program like Auto Hotkey, to remap the keyboard itself.

This is the one thing I was worried about, given that they did the same thing with Skyrim. They later patched it out so the numberpad was bindable, but why the hell do they never learn from past mistakes!!??

I cannot beLIEVE this! I always use the numpad for movement and hotkeys (VATS, reload, PipBoy, crouch, etc). I have a third-party program I can use that basically tricks the keyboard into thinking I hit the spacebar when I actually hit Numpad-1, for example, but I hate to have to use that kind of work-around. This is VERY disappointing, if true.

EDIT: That was it, Auto Hotkey (.ahk files).... seems like I had to use that for Skyrim, too, now that I think about it. DAMNATION!

There will likely be a mod within a day or two like there was for Skyrim, but I think when I get home from work I'll go ahead and create an Auto Hotkey profile while I'm waiting for the game to release. Thank god we at least have some ability to solve problems for ourselves on PC.

Haha, wow, this is going to be annoying. Mods will have to save the day, once again. Just like in the past, I do want to say I appreciate what the modding community does to not just enhance their game, but they share it too which is wonderful.

Seriously?! EVERY game I've played to date has allowed me to map the keypad. I use a left-handed mouse as well and the keypad is perfect for controlling everything, not just movement.

Bethesda, FIX THIS PLEASE!

I was looking forward to buying this tomorrow... now... I have to wait for a mod so I can actually play it.

... Doesn't the numpad emulate directional keys when Numlock is off?

Annnyways, try making sure numlock is on before trying to bind your keys. I'd find it weird if the entire US QWERTY keyboard is not programmed directly into the engine.

I am right-handed. I just use a left-handed mouse. I could go into details as to the health issues that necessitate that but I won't bore you.

Let's just say that I have to use this setup, and it works fine for me. And, like I said, every othet game I've played (including Fallout 3, New Vegas, etc) have allowed it.

Fallout 4 is a step back in this area. I hope they fix it soon.

Totally agreed. I can't imagine why you'd disallow mapping the keypad. I mean, what did they do in this game that every other game maker (including Bethesda themselves) hasn't done til now? More to the point, why would you intentionally cripple the gameplay like this? I play every game with this layout.

This is 2015 and today's gamers are used to flexibility. The next thing someone's gonna say is tha this game doesn't support ultra-wide resolutions. Man that better not be the case, now that I've said it. Bought my 21:9 screen recently with this type of gaming in mind!

It should never have fall on the player or modding community to fix basic freaking functionality like key mapping.

We did go through this with Skyrim, I was participating on the thread where someone found the file and we dug out how to mod it.

Apparently, the Devs never, ever read forums like that. Or this, I assume.

Frankly, I'm not up to fixing someone else's loose **** tonight, I will probably go try to fix ESO's loose **** instead.

Now I have to report the mouse pointer bug, if someone else hasn't done that.

I mean, this is really, really LAME behavior. I used AHK briefly with Skyrim but that caused some issues I don't even remember.

Why would you even do this? Just to get a laugh out of annoying paying customers who will waste time working around your pointless restrictions?

I fell for it, guys, I pre-ordered. My bad. No more.

I'm raging as well...well not raging, but I'm seriously annoyed. I'm used to arrow keys all my life. I already experienced this with Skyrim. Do they just not care or is it ignorance?

Seriously, BethDevs must recon there's left handed and arrow key players out there, right?

Ontop of that the new archive format doesn't allow for quick unpack with past tools, and the ControlMap.txt found in MyGames is encrypted. It's feels like they don't want us to play with arrow keys. They want to enforce us to play with WSAD? Please fix this!

I'm having the same issue,

Again born with the defect of being left handed, I know us lefties are only 10% of the population but come on...

I always use the Keypad, I can bind every key I've ever needed exactly within reach, and their perfectly lined up to boot (yes the slant of the normal qwerty keys bugs me).

I'll start messing around with configs and see if i can come up with anything, but i figure i'm going to have to use my hardware to rebind the keys.

Usually the only reason for locking down keys is due to the program being "ported" instead of programmed for a pc.

I've tried some simple stuff just so anyone doesn't waste their time trying as well

-cut and paste keybindings from NV preferance.ini into FO4 Preferances

-using Skrym ControlMap_Custom.txt editor

Arrows are reserved for dialogue. There is new unpacking tool in the general section made by behippo & co. (Inside FOSE - EDIT: I mean F4SE... topic)

Well @ least I got it thru steam so I got my money back. Was really looking forward to this too. Must have brought developers over from EA, seams like some basic crap they'd screw up.

Arrow keys are not reserved for dialogue, I can rebind to arrow keys. Just not to the keypad.

Also the hardcoded pickup and back keys.

It's Skyrim all over again. I guess you can make the same mistakes over and over and keep getting paid in the private sector, too.

edit: It looks like rebinding using autohotkey to use *some* keys would break the hardcoded E / Tab / Arrow key bindings that are not accessible from the config menu.

It's like it was *designed* to make fixing it as annoying as possible.

Waiting on an official fix for this. I didn't have this issue with FO3 or FONV. Tried adding bindings to the ini file(s), but they don't do anything.

The contents of the Fallout4 - Interface.ba2 file don't seem to include a keymap file like the Interface.bsa file in Skyrim. I may poke around a little more but kind of sick of doing other people's jobs - I have to do that when I get up in the morning.

IIRC in Skyrim that still left us with the hardcoded key problem, for some months. I had a wierd part-hotkey and part-controlmap solution inbetween - but I had too many CTDs to play anyway at that point.

edit: doesn't appear to be in Startup or Misc, either.

There is a controlmap_custom.txt in the games / save folder, but it's encrypted.
